Item Open Access Essays in social choice theory(2009) Erol, SelmanIn this thesis, we investigate several issues concerning the class of Maskin monotonic social choice rules. Firstly, given a set of profiles, we find out which Maskin monotonic social choice rules adopt this set as a center. Then we introduce an algorithmic approach to find the self-monotonicities of a Maskin monotonic social choice rule. Moreover, we characterize all binary set operations that preserve Maskin monotonicity. Then we pass to investigating social choice functions, and determine the the domains of impossibility and possibility around a center with respect to a modified Manhattan metric. Finally, we try to reach a necessary and sufficient condition for Nash-implementability of a social choice in terms of neutralityItem Open Access A novel characterization of nash-implementable social choice rules via neutrality(2020-07) Mammadov, AghaheybatIn this thesis, we study Nash implementability of social choice rules in relation with the neutrality notion. Several works in the literature provide a characterization of Nash-implementable social choice rules. However, they do not explicitly show the degree of neutrality property in the Nash equilibrium concept which is also existing in Nash-implementable rules. In this study, we define a weak version of the neutrality condition critical neutrality which is associated with the critical domain of a social choice rule. The critical neutrality notion when conjoined with Maskin monotonicity turns out to be equivalent to Nash implementability. Moreover, we propose an algorithm to obtain a maximal domain of preference profiles on which a specified social choice rule is Nash-implementable, by utilizing critical neutrality as a tool. The main result of the thesis is in support of the view that implementability on the full domain of preference profiles is highly related with implementability on the critical domain in Nash equilibrium and possibly, in other solution concepts.Item Restricted Türkiye’deki Yehova Şahitleri’nin kültürleri ve yasam biçimleri(Bilkent University, 2024) Şahin, Damla Pelin; Kılınç, İrem Bahar; Şamlı, Elifsu; Apan, Mustafa Mert; Çakır, AdaThis research delves into the presence and influence of Jehovah's Witnesses in Turkey, with a specific focus on their activities in Ankara. Despite being considered a religious denomination, Jehovah's Witnesses assert themselves as the true followers of Christianity, driven by strict adherence to the Bible. Through missionary endeavors, they aim to propagate the teachings of Jehovah, maintaining a sustained presence in Turkey. By examining their history, beliefs, and interactions with Turkish society, this study aims to offer insights into their impact and role in Turkey, particularly in Ankara.Item Open Access UN peacemaking efforts in intrastate conflict : the role of neutrality(2009) Rizzuto, Natalie M.The object of this thesis is to find out how the United Nations (UN) can best achieve a successful outcome in its peacemaking efforts in civil conflicts; specifically it focuses on the question of neutrality or bias in the UN’s peacemaking attempts. By largely using content analysis of UN resolutions and some basic statistics, the findings of this thesis show that the UN is less likely to be successful in the peacemaking of civil conflicts when it is biased. Furthermore, the UN is found more often to be biased than neutral in resolutions pertaining to peacemaking attempts in civil conflicts. These results indicate that, although the UN gains its legitimacy and role in the world from its perceived neutrality, this is not the case and this may have implications for its future intervention efforts in civil conflicts.
