The current study aims to investigate the effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction. We examined place attachment by conducting a survey comparing two neighborhoods; Ayrancı in the city center, the other Çayyolu, far away from the city center. We also investigated residential satisfaction in these neighborhoods by examining their physical and social features as a measure of residential quality. Furthermore, we investigated the relationship between place attachment and residential satisfaction. One hundred thirty-five respondents participated in this research by using snowball sampling. The results of the study implied that there is no difference in terms of neighborhood location between the residents’ level of place attachment. However, there is a difference between two neighborhoods in terms of the level of residential satisfaction. Moreover, in line with the literature, there is a correlation between place attachment and residential satisfaction.Item Open Access Emergent local initiative and the city: the case of neighbourhood associations of the better-off classes in post-1990 urban Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd., 2007) Erman, T.; Yıldar, M. C.This article investigates the voluntary local organisations of the better-off classes in the Turkish urban context. Based on empirical research conducted with four neighbourhood associations (NAs), information is provided regarding their process of establishment, leadership, autonomy, goals and projects, resources and obstacles, which points to the significance of context. The research demonstrates that Turkish NAs differ from those in the West in terms of their commitment to ideological as much as pragmatic issues. In their response to the 'Islamist' versus 'secularist' polarisation in society, they seek to create their own localities as the places of secular and cosmopolitan people; and in their response to the increasingly unregulated and poorly serviced city, they struggle to create orderly localities protected from unlawful rent-seeking practices and equipped with adequate amenities. The NAs may be regarded as civic initiatives that empower the locality. Yet, by doing so, they may cause uneven development in urban space.Item Open Access The impact of walkability on eudaimonic and hedonic well-being in equal eye-level street greenery neighborhoods(2022-05) Sarıgöl, MügeThis thesis analyzed the influence of objective and subjective walkability on momentary hedonic and eudaimonic well-being while walking in neighborhoods. For this purpose, two neighborhoods with different objective walkability, and equal eye-level street greenery levels were chosen. Consequently, a survey was conducted with two hundred and nine neighborhood residents in total. The residents were asked about their perceptions regarding their neighborhood’s walkability levels, and momentary hedonic and eudaimonic well-being during walking in their neighborhoods. The results showed that objective walkability did not have a positive influence on perceived walkability, hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. However, the data analysis indicated a positive moderate correlation between perceived walkability and momentary hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. The outcomes of this thesis provided new insights to researchers for means to facilitate and support momentary subjective well-being through perceived walkability dimensions.Item Open Access Neighborhood effects and women's agency regarding poverty and patriarchy in a Turkish slum(Sage Publications Ltd., 2008) Erman, T.; Türkyilmaz, S.This paper aims to understand the interplay between the neighborhood (spatial) effects of poverty, ethnicity, kin, and patriarchy, and women's agency in the context of an inner-city slum in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. It is based on a field study that focuses on the experiences of women residents - that is, rural migrants known for their dependency on neighborhood spaces - and their grown-up daughters who were raised in the city. The neighborhood context - namely, the social and physical isolation of the site, the limited access to urban institutions, and the growing risk of crime - has a negative impact on women's lives, restraining but not determining women's agency. Women's struggle for agency in this context is contingent on other factors, including whether they live in ethnic clusters and whether their husbands are working, as well as urban experience and individual biography. © 2008 Pion Ltd and its Licensors.Item Open Access Neighborhood location and its association with place attachment and residential satisfaction(Emerald, 2020) Aksel, Elif; İmamoğlu, ÇağrıPurpose: This paper aims to investigate the association of neighborhood location with place attachment and residential satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach: First, the authors reviewed the literature on place attachment and residential satisfaction, and then generated a questionnaire based on the scales from the literature. The authors surveyed 135 respondents in two neighborhoods of Ankara, a metropolitan city in Turkey: one in the city center, the other in a suburb. To analyze the data, first, factor analysis, and later, multivariate analysis of variance and correlation tests were conducted. Findings: The results indicated that place attachment and residential satisfaction were positively correlated, in congruence with the related literature; however, neighborhood location appeared to be associated only with residential satisfaction. The theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed with respect to the recent issues on housing. Originality/value: The effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction (by comparing two different residential areas of the city) have not been adequately examined in earlier studies. The study results provide an understanding of the effectiveness of residential location on improving place attachment and residential satisfaction and contribute to the existing literature. Although the study findings may not be generalized to other locations in Turkey, this study contributed to the previous studies on place attachment and residential satisfaction by providing data from Turkish residents, which is less often examined.Item Open Access A socio-spatial analysis of urban transformation at a neighborhood scale: the case of the relocation of Kadifekale inhabitants to TOKİ Uzundere in İzmir(Pergamon Press, 2015) Demirli, M. E.; Ultav, Z. T.; Demirtaş-Milz, N.Particularly in the last two decades, urban governors have presented urban transformation projects as ideal solutions to help low-income urban residents improve their living conditions. However, the way they have been carried out and their consequences mean that these projects do not, in most cases, bring the expected improvements. Most projects involve relocating residents to new, more peripheral districts of the city, which causes social isolation and certain socio-spatial incompatibilities between their previous and new habitats. Using a case from Izmir in Turkey, this study aims to analyze such socio-spatial incompatibilities in the lives of low-income residents that are caused by relocation within the framework of urban transformation projects. One of Izmir's earliest inner-city gecekondu neighborhoods, Kadifekale was chosen by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality as a site for urban transformation due to the risk of landslide in the area. Before the start of the project, the neighborhood contained 7324 housing units accommodating rural-to-urban migrants, mainly from the southeast of Turkey. This urban transformation project aimed to relocate at least some of the inhabitants from their homes in Kadifekale to recently constructed apartment blocks in the TOKI˙ Uzundere Public Housing Project on the periphery of the city. Although many residents were reluctant to exchange their houses for new apartments, some were persuaded to move to TOKI˙, which was presented as the ideal solution by the municipal officials. This study critically evaluates the Kadifekale urban transformation project, particularly with regard to the relocation of some Kadifekale residents from their one- or two-story houses in Kadifekale to apartment blocks on the periphery of the city. The analysis is based on a comparison between the socio-spatial experiences of migrants in Kadifekale and their recent experiences in Uzundere and the possibility of certain incompatibilities in these two experiences. The argument aims to demonstrate the changed conditions of social life and daily life practices as a result of altered spatial properties at a neighborhood scale: their use of outdoor spaces, the meanings they attributed to neighborhood space ("intimacy of place" within categories of sensual (visual and olfactory) recognition), and their sociospatial network. The argument draws both implicitly and explicitly on Henri Lefebvre's spatial triad and De Certeau's conceptualization of tactic versus strategy as the major conceptual inspirations for this study. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.Item Open Access Understanding the experiences of the politics of urbanization in two gecekondu (squatter) neighborhoods under two urban regimes: ethnography in the urban periphery of Ankara, Turkey(The Institute, Inc., 2011) Erman, T.This article investigates the politics of urbanization in the Turkish context. It is built upon the premise that the "urban coalition" in the era of nationalist developmentalism, which was populist in nature, is replaced by a "new urban coalition," a neoliberal one, since the 1980s. I argue that the bargaining power of gecekondu (squatter) residents with municipal authorities for their "extra-legal" practices in building their houses in the former era was lost after neoliberal policies were adopted. This argument is substantiated by the ethnographic fieldwork in which the experiences of gecekondu residents in building, improving and (not) defending their houses and neighborhoods were obtained. Two ethnographic studies were conducted in two different sites in Ankara: a neighborhood where the Alevis were the majority, which became the site of leftist mobilization in the 1970s, and a district where conservative Sunnis lived, who supported right-wing politics. By situating the two neighborhoods in the context of the two different urban regimes, namely, those in the populist and neoliberal eras, the article points out the changing relationship of the gecekondu residents with the state, showing variances with respect to the differing political positions and social compositions of the two neighborhoods. © 2011 The Institute, Inc.
