Item Open Access EU energy security behavior : exploring the central motivation(2007) Balaban, GökçeThis thesis aims to understand energy security behavior of the EU in the light of two IR theoretical stances: rationalism-neo-realism and constructivism. In order to do that, the study targets the question: “What is the central motivation of EU energy security policies- norms or interests- and how the different IR theories of rationalism-neo-realism and constructivism can interpret EU energy security policies differently”. Power and wealth being the most crucial, interest-based policies refer to the efforts that will promote the material interests, disregarding the normative considerations. Norm-based policies, on the other hand, represent the policies which are resulted from the identity, norms and political culture, and which are sometimes taken at the expense of the material interests. Thus, this thesis proposes two contradictory impulses- interests and norms- for EU energy security behaviour, and tries to understand which one is dominant in energy security decision-making process. Relying on official EU documents and on literature works, this study reaches to the conclusion that in environmental topics, the EU is strongly committed to the norms. However, in the topics considering the supply security such as guaranteeing the present and future energy supplies, and energy diversification- the EU follows more interest-based policies. In conclusion, although the EU is the most committed actor to environmental protection in the world, a fully normative approach is still lacking in EU energy security behavior.Item Open Access European Union-Russia natural gas relations(2007) Arınç, İbrahim SaidThis thesis aims to analyze, the natural gas relationship of European Union and Russia with comparative perspective. The EU is very much dependent on Russian gas and this dependency is expected to increase in the following decades. On the other hand, the natural gas export revenues significantly contribute to Russian budget that makes it dependent on gas sales to Europe. Therefore, this relationship creates interdependence between EU and Russia. Finally, by means of analyzing this interdependency, this study also aims to discuss the possible contribution of Turkey to the future of EU-Russia gas relations.Item Open Access The Iraq conflict and its security implications for Turkey (2003-2007)(2007) Türken, AnılThis thesis evaluates the security threats posed to Turkey after the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. The newly emerging federal, democratic Iraqi state and its political, economic and ethnic make up is analyzed in detail in order to demonstrate the threats it may pose to Turkish national security. The thesis looks at the links between the terrorist organization the PKK and the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq, as well as outlining mistakes of Turkish foreign policy in the region that have led to the current impasse. The Turkmen minority in Iraq, the status of Kirkuk and other disputed territories, as well as Iraqi and Kurdish legislation on Iraq’s energy resources are also analyzed. This thesis aims to draw a roadmap for Turkish foreign policy in the region that would avoid past mistakes and address security concerns for the future, while guaranteeing Iraq’s territorial integrity.
