Item Open Access Analytical loading models and control strategies in flexible manufacturing systems: a comparative study(1990) Kırkavak, NureddinThere are three problem areas in designing and implementing a manufacturing line : the part family selection and grouping, system configuration and toolings and the operational control of manufacturing. The manufacturing process has to be stream-lined by considering resources and products to achieve flow lines operating around product families with acceptable levels of utilization. The stream-lined processes have to be assigned to tandem machines in the manufacturing lines. Then, interactions between production and inventory levels should be controlled at the operational level. Based on this framework, first a system configuration and tooling problem is modeled. The model turns out to be a large mLxed integer linear program, so that some alternative optimal seeking or heuristic techniques are used to solye the model for constructing a flow line structured Flexible Manufacturing System. Push systems of the Material Requirements Planning type or pull systems like the base-stock or Kanban schemes are often seen as alternatives for controlling manufacturing systems. The differentiating features of push, pull and a hybrid strategy are studied by discrete event simulation under different system and environmental characteristics for Flexible Manufacturing Systems. The impact of assignment of operations to machines on the performance of the system is also discussed.Item Open Access Joint gateway selection, transmission slot assignment, routing and power control for wireless mesh networks(Elsevier, 2013-07) Gokbayrak, K.; Yıldırım, E. A.Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) provide cost effective solutions for setting up a communications network over a certain geographic area. In this paper, we study strategic problems of WMNs such as selecting the gateway nodes along with several operational problems such as routing, power control, and transmission slot assignment. Under the assumptions of the physical interference model and the tree-based routing restriction for traffic flow, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is presented, in which the objective is to maximize the minimum service level provided at the nodes. A set of valid inequalities is derived and added to the model in an attempt to improve the solution quality. Since the MILP formulation becomes computationally infeasible for larger instances, we propose a heuristic method that is aimed at solving the problem in two stages. In the first stage, we devise a simple MILP problem that is concerned only with the selection of gateway nodes. In the second stage, the MILP problem in the original formulation is solved by fixing the gateway nodes from the first stage. Computational experiments are provided to evaluate the proposed models and the heuristic method.Item Open Access A new formulation approach for location routing-problems(Springer, 2012-12) Toyoglu, H.; Karasan, O. E.; Kara, B. Y.A Location-Routing Problem (LRP) combines two difficult problems, facility location and vehicle routing, and as such it is inherently hard to solve. In this paper, we propose a different formulation approach than the common arc-based product-flow (Arc-BPF) approach in the literature. We associate product amounts to the nodes of the network resulting in a node-based product-flow (Node-BPF) formulation. Our main objective is to develop LRP models with fewer constraints and variables, which can be solved more efficiently. To introduce the proposed approach, we reformulate a complex four-index Arc-BPF LRP model from the literature as a three-index Node-BPF model, which computationally outperforms the former. We then introduce a heuristic method.
