Item Open Access Employing active contours and artificial neural networks in representing ultrasonic range data(IEEE, 2008-08) Altun, Kerem; Barshan, BillurActive snake contours and Kohonen's self-organizing feature maps (SOM) are considered for efficient representation and evaluation of the maps of an environment obtained with different ultrasonic arc map (UAM) processing techniques. The mapping results are compared with a reference map acquired with a very accurate laser system. Both approaches are convenient ways of representing and comparing the map points obtained with different techniques among themselves, as well as with an absolute reference. Snake curve fitting results in more accurate maps than SOM since it is more robust to outliers. The two methods are sufficiently general that they can be applied to discrete point maps acquired with other mapping techniques and other sensing modalities as well. copyright by EURASIP.Item Open Access A survey on wireless position estimation(Springer New York LLC, 2008) Gezici, SinanIn this paper, an overview of various algorithms for wireless position estimation is presented. Although the position of a node in a wireless network can be estimated directly from the signals traveling between that node and a number of reference nodes, it is more practical to estimate a set of signal parameters first, and then to obtain the final position estimation using those estimated parameters. In the first step of such a two-step positioning algorithm, various signal parameters such as time of arrival, angle of arrival or signal strength are estimated. In the second step, mapping, geometric or statistical approaches are commonly employed. In addition to various positioning algorithms, theoretical limits on their estimation accuracy are also presented in terms of Cramer-Rao lower bounds.
