Item Open Access Anisotropic Emission from Multilayered Plasmon Resonator Nanocomposites of Isotropic Semiconductor Quantum Dots(American Chemical Society, 2011-01-19) Ozel, T.; Nizamoglu, S.; Sefunc, M.A.; Samarskaya, O.; Ozel, I. O.; Mutlugun, E.; Lesnyak, V.; Gaponik N.; Eychmuller, A.; Gaponenko, S. V.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe propose and demonstrate a nanocomposite localized surface plasmon resonator embedded into an artificial three-dimensional construction. Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots are assembled between layers of metal nanoparticles to create a highly strong plasmon-exciton interaction in the plasmonic cavity. In such a multilayered plasmonic resonator architecture of isotropic CdTe quantum dots, we observed polarized light emission of 80% in the vertical polarization with an enhancement factor of 4.4, resulting in a steady-state anisotropy value of 0.26 and reaching the highest quantum efficiency level of 30% ever reported for such CdTe quantum dot solids. Our electromagnetic simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental characterization data showing a significant emission enhancement in the vertical polarization, for which their fluorescence decay lifetimes are substantially shortened by consecutive replication of our unit cell architecture design. Such strongly plasmon-exciton coupling nanocomposites hold great promise for future exploitation and development of quantum dot plasmonic biophotonics and quantum dot plasmonic optoelectronics.Item Open Access Plasmonic band gap structures for surface-enhanced Raman scattering(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2008) Kocabas, A.; Ertas G.; Senlik, S.S.; Aydınlı, AtillaSurface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) of rhodamine 6G (R6G) adsorbed on biharmonic metallic grating structures was studied. Biharmonic metallic gratings include two different grating components, one acting as a coupler to excite surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), and the other forming a plasmonic band gap for the propagating SPPs. In the vicinity of the band edges, localized surface plasmons are formed. These localized Plasmons strongly enhance the scattering efficiency of the Raman signal emitted on the metallic grating surfaces. It was shown that reproducible Raman scattering enhancement factors of over 10 5 can be achieved by fabricating biharmonic SERS templates using soft nano-imprint technique. We have shown that the SERS activities from these templates are tunable as a function of plasmonic resonance conditions. Similar enhancement factors were also measured for directional emission of photoluminescence. At the wavelengths of the plasmonic absorption peak, directional enhancement by a factor of 30 was deduced for photoluminescence measurements. © 2008 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access A route to unusually broadband plasmonic absorption spanning from visible to mid-infrared(Springer, 2019) Aalizadeh, Majid; Khavasi, A.; Serebryannikov, A. E.; Vandenbosch, G. A. E.; Özbay, EkmelIn this paper, a route to ultra-broadband absorption is suggested and demonstrated by a feasible design. The high absorption regime (absorption above 90%) for the suggested structure ranges from visible to mid-infrared (MIR), i.e., for the wavelength varying from 478 to 3278 nm that yields an ultra-wide band with the width of 2800 nm. The structure consists of a top-layer-patterned metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configuration, into the insulator layer of which, an ultra-thin 5 nm layer of manganese (Mn) is embedded. The MIM configuration represents a Ti-Al2O3-Ti tri-layer. It is shown that, without the ultra-thin layer of Mn, the absorption bandwidth is reduced to 274 nm. Therefore, adding only a 5 nm layer of Mn leads to a more than tenfold increase in the width of the absorption band. It is explained in detail that the physical mechanism yielding this ultra-broadband result is a combination of plasmonic and non-plasmonic resonance modes, along with the appropriate optical properties of Mn. This structure has the relative bandwidth (RBW) of 149%, while only one step of lithography is required for its fabrication, so it is relatively simple. This makes it rather promising for practical applications.
