Assisted living as a new place schema: a comparison with homes and nursing homes

This study examines how the new place type of assisted living is represented in terms of its visual and verbal attributes and in comparison with the well-established schemata of home and nursing homes. Ninety-eight respondents (with a mean age of 62 years) are surveyed. Results indicate that home and nursing home are conceived in opposite terms, whereas assisted living is represented in between but with more homelike than institution-like attributes, except for its visual representation, which seems to involve rather institution-like exteriors and undifferentiated interiors. Results are discussed with regard to basic attributes of assisted living and possible differences between schemata of newly developing and well-established place types. © 2007 Sage Publications.

Linking advertising, materialism, and life satisfaction

This paper develops theory related to advertising, materialism, and life satisfaction by formally testing explanations related to the antecedents and consequences of materialism. Survey data were collected from seven major cities each in a different country (Australia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Germany, Egypt, Korea, Turkey, and the USA) using a probability sample (cluster sampling method involving income stratification). The results showed that the extent to which advertising is perceived to be materialistic contributes to materialism. Materialism, in turn, leads to the frequent use of various standards of comparison in making judgments about standard of living. As judgments about standard of living increase, standard of living is evaluated more negatively. In turn, negative self-evaluations contribute significantly to dissatisfaction with life. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Recent developments in the Turkish economy

During the past fifteen years of Justice and Development Party's (AKP) rule Turkey has experienced important gains in income and living standards. Over the period 2002-2016, the real per capita income has increased by 78.5%, and the transformation into an industrial and service economy has been ongoing, with agriculture still accounting for 7.9% of GDP and 20.7% of total employment. However, Turkey's catch-up with advanced economies has slowed since 2008, and progress has increasingly diverged from the historic record of the 2002-2007 period. Furthermore, political developments within Turkey and in the surrounding region started to have lasting influence on economic developments in Turkey.
