Item Open Access Client-server synchronization and buffering for variable rate multimedia retrievals(1996) Hui J.Y.; Karasan, E.; Li J.; Zhang, J.We consider the use of large buffers and feedback as a mechanism to maintain loosely coupled synchronization between a multimedia server and a client. The multimedia stream is modeled as a fluid flow through rate controlled valves and buffers with multiple thresholds. These thresholds are used to control the rates upstream. The quality of service for the multimedia connection is characterized in terms of the jitter in the received media stream due to buffer underflow and overflow. This quality of service is used to exercise rate and admission control in the presence of congestion. The feedback mechanism is, implemented in GRAMS, an adaptive multimedia client-server system. Experimental statistics are gathered for the purpose of traffic engineering. We employ a fluid flow and first passage time analysis to understand the traffic process through the pipelines and the buffers and to estimate the amount of signaling required by the feedback mechanism.Item Open Access Combined filtering and key-frame reduction of motion capture data with application to 3DTV(WSCG, 2006-01-02) Önder, Onur; Erdem, Ç.; Erdem, T.; Güdükbay, Uğur; Özgüç, BülentA new method for combined filtering and key-frame reduction of motion capture data is proposed. Filtering of motion capture data is necessary to eliminate any jitter introduced by a motion capture system. Key-frame reduction, on the other hand, allows animators to easily edit motion data by representing animation curves with a significantly smaller number of key frames. The proposed technique achieves key frame reduction and jitter removal simultaneously by fitting a Hermite curve to motion capture data using dynamic programming. OnurThe growing need for high-speed wireless communication systems has led communication engineers to design and implement communication systems at higher frequencies where more bandwidth is available, use digital modulation schemes with more complex constellations and place carriers closer together with little guard-band in the pursuit of designing communication systems closer to the channel capacity. These new designs have placed tighter constraints on the performance of oscillators and timing devices of transceivers. In this work, the effects of timing clock jitter on the receiver Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based communication systems are examined and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) effects are quantified in order to prevent unnecessary over designs in OFDM ADC circuitry. In this respect, a simulation tool that synthesizes jitter processes with defined spectral characteristics is prepared. The generated jitter processes are utilized in an OFDM simulation tool that quantifies the ICI levels caused by receiver ADC sampling jitter. Using these two tools, ICI levels of certain OFDM systems are examined and guidelines for OFDM ADC circuitry design are proposed.
