Item Open Access Item Open Access Market-driven approach based on Markov decision theory for optimal use of resources in software development(Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2004) Noppen, J.; Aksit, M.; Nicola, V.; Tekinerdogan, B.Changes in requirements may have a severe impact on development processes. For example, if requirements change during the course of a software development activity, it may be necessary to reschedule development activities so that the new requirements can be addressed in a timely manner. Unfortunately, current software development methods do not provide explicit means to adapt development processes with respect to changes in requirements. The paper proposes a method based on Markov decision theory, which determines the estimated optimal development schedule with respect to probabilistic product demands and resource constraints. This method is supported by a tool and applied to an industrial case.Item Open Access A new wireless asynchronous data communications module for industrial applications(2013) Ege, Y.; Şensoy, M.G.; Kalender O.; Nazlibilek, S.; Çitak H.All the sensors such as temperature, humidity, and pressure used in industry provide analog outputs as inputs for their control units. Wireless transmission of the data has advantages on wired transmission such as USB port, parallel port and serial port and therefore has great importance for industrial applications. In this work, a new wireless asynchronous data communications module has been developed to send the earth magnetic field data around a ferromagnetic material detected by a KMZ51 AMR sensor. The transmitter module transmits the analog data obtained from a source to a computer environment where they are stored and then presented in a graphical form. In this design, an amplitude shift keying (ASK) transceiver working at the frequency of 433.92 MHz which is a frequency inside the so called Industrial Scientific Medical band (ISM band) used for wireless communications. The analog data first fed into a 10-bit ADC controlled by a PIC microcontroller and then the digital data is sent to the transmitter. A preamble bit string is added in front of the data bits and another bit string for achieving synchronization and determination the start of the data is used. The data arriving at the receiver is taken by the microcontroller and sent to a LCD display as well as the serial port of a computer where it is written in a text file. A Visual Basic based graphics interface is designed to receive, store and present the data in the form of graphical shapes. In the paper, all the work has been explained in detail. © 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Users can give commands to a computer by hand signs (hand postures, hand shapes) or hand movements (hand gestures). Such a hand interface system can be realized by using cameras as input devices, and software for analyzing the images. In this hand interface system, commands are recognized by analyzing the hand shapes and its trajectories in the images. Therefore, success of the recognition of hand shape is vital and depends on the discriminative power of the hand shape representation. There are many shape representation techniques in the literature. However, none of them are working properly for all shapes. While a representation leads to a good result for a set of shapes, it may fail in another one. Therefore, our aim is to find the most appropriate shape representation technique for hand shapes to be used in hand interfaces. Our candidate representations are Fourier Descriptors, Hu Moment Invariant, Shape Descriptors and Orientation Histogram. Based on widely-used hand shapes for an interface, we compared the representations in terms of their discriminative power and speed. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.Item Open Access A zone-based shared-tree multicast protocol for mobile ad hoc networks(IEEE, 2003) Rangnekar, A.; Zhang, Y.; Selçuk, Ali A.; Bicak, A.; Devarapalli V.; Sidhu, D.This paper proposes a new multicast protocol for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The proposed protocol, Shared-Tree MZR, is a shared tree variant of the Multicast Routing Protocol based on Zone Routing (MZR). The concept of zone-based multicast routing for mobile ad hoc networks was originally proposed in MZR. The new protocol utilizes the advantages of the shared-tree together with the advantages of the zone-based routing. The performance of the protocol is analyzed for various network conditions. The test results show that the new protocol performs well and has significantly low overhead in scenarios with multiple sources.
