Item Open Access Effects of different seating arrangements on learning experience : the case of medium sized lecture settings in Bilkent University(Bilkent University, 2014) Hilal, Ümmüşan SelinThe aim of this study is to understand and compare effects of different seating arrangements on attention, concentration, participation and learning satisfaction in medium sized lecture settings in higher education. The study also aims to examine seating preferences in terms of territoriality and personal space. Two types of seating arrangements which are conventional straight row arrangement and U- Shape arrangement were compared. The investigation was conducted in the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, at Bilkent University. The sample group of the study was same in both seating arrangements. The study was conducted eight times: four times with traditional row arrangement and 4 times with U- shape arrangement. Analysis of physical space, direct and indirect observations and questionnaire were used as techniques. Firstly, the sample group was observed in traditional row arrangement and then U- Shape arrangement. Both lectures and discussion tasks were given to the sample group in both arrangements to understand their effects on students’ attention, concentration and participation. In addition to these, while respondents were being observed, photographs and videos were also taken and they were analyzed later. After the observations, a questionnaire was given iii to the group and descriptive statistics was done with SPSS 21.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). It was found that students tend to be more attentive and more concentrated on the lecture in straight row arrangement and they tend to participate more actively in U- Shape arrangement of the lecture room. The observations coincided with the students’ perception on these aspects as shown by their responses of the questionnaire. In terms of space use and preferences the research shows that if students want to concentrate more, they seem to choose seats where they are closer to instructor. Finally, it was seen that students tend to be more tolerant in terms personal space when they sit next to their close friends.Item Open Access Enhanced user performance in an image gallery application with a mobile autostereoscopic touch display(Elsevier, 2014) Sassi, A.; Pöyhönen P.; Jakonen, S.; Suomi, S.; Capin, T.; Häkkinen J.In this study, we explored how stereoscopic depth affects performance and user experience in a mobile device with an autostereoscopic touch display. Participants conducted a visual search task with an image gallery application on three layouts with different depth ranges. The task completion times were recorded, and the participants were asked to rate their experiences. The results revealed that the image search times were facilitated by a mild depth effect and that too great a depth slowed search times and decreased user-experience ratings. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The study was carried out with 100 EFL learners paired as low-low, high-high and low-high and with 36 EFL learners matched as unfamiliar and familiar in the oral proficiency exam at a state university in Turkey. In order to place the participants for low-low, high-high and low-high groups, their scores in the proficiency exam which measured their reading, writing and listening skills as well as their vocabulary and grammar knowledge, and their scores in the oral proficiency exam were examined by the researcher. While 15 pairs were selected for the low-low and high-high groups separately, 20 pairs were selected for the low-high group. Then all 100 students (50 pairs) in the first cohort were asked whether their partners were their classmates or their friends in the exam and nine pairs out of 50 were detected as familiar. After that, nine unfamiliar pairs were selected in order to compare them with the familiar ones. In total, 50 videos were listened to and transcribed by using the conventions suggested by Jefferson (2004). Forthwith, all transcriptions were analyzed in order to identify the interactional resources such as turn-taking, repair, topic management and task management employed by the test-takers during the test discourse. Following this process, the researcher drew upon the interactional resources in order to assign the interactional patterns such as collaborative, asymmetric, parallel and blend which took place during test-takers’ interaction with each other. The results indicated that pairing two different proficiency level students is disadvantageous for the high level test-takers in terms of topic management, task management and repair. In contrast, while the low levels are advantageous in terms of topic and task management in particular, they are disadvantageous in terms of turn-taking. What is more, while high-high pairs create a collaborative pattern which is the most favorable one, low-low pairs usually create a parallel pattern. On the other hand, low-high pairs usually generate an asymmetric pattern due to the dominance of the high levels. Furthermore, the findings suggested that pairing two unfamiliar peer interlocutors seem more advantageous for the test-takers because unfamiliar pairs usually generate a collaborative pattern whereas familiar pairs usually create an asymmetric pattern during the test discourse. In light of these findings, this study provided insights into how test-takers should be matched in paired speaking tests for the test administrators.Item Open Access “Interface: the actual story”(Inter-Disciplinary Press, 2014) Şenova Tunalı, Funda; Dun, S.; Moser, D.Technological enhancements and the integration of digital media into our daily lives have brought us many possibilities to form new associations and interact with the content that we are confronted with. Digital storytelling is such a field, which by using the characteristics of new media tries to form new semantic and syntactic relations between the authors/producers/designers/creators, the stories told and the users. Interface appears as the gateway through which the user accesses the content. The physical and digital interfaces (graphical user interfaces) and how the user interacts with them set the rules of the process by which the data is accessed. New media places the interface and the user at the heart of this interaction. The possibility of customising the user experience is an exciting one, which can bring dynamism to any story that is being told. The graphical user interface not only provides access to the content being represented but also gives freedom to the user to a degree on how to experience the story and provides visual information about the look and feel of the story. This chapter probes into the idea that an interface beyond being an undetachable part of the story being told, also acts as a part of the story with which it unfolds. Whether it is an online book, a hyperlinked story, a new media documentary, a computer game, or any other form of transmedia storytelling, interface becomes an important element of the story that gives visual hints and designates the look and feel of the story being told. This study intends to put forward interface as the element that is the gateway to the story, a part of the story and the reflection of the user who access the content through interacting with the interface.Item Open Access Resonant field: a critical analysis of user interface design in digital media(Bilkent University, 2016-06) Tunalı, ErhanThis thesis analyzes user interface design process in digital media. New methodologies, new perceptions, new approaches and new technologies help unfolding new understandings within this paradigm. Within the shifting nature and definition of art and design, a work has become something that gains value and importance as the audience of such works are transformed into users or participants. The core of this thesis is on the user experience through the interaction of the user/participant with the interface designed by the artist/designer. It probes into the levels of interaction and user interface design through analysis of works from the domain and a designed interactive installation.Item Embargo The effects of generic and targeted visibility on work-process interactions in open-plan offices(Bilkent University, 2024-06) Yenel Güler, GizemVisibility within open-plan offices plays a crucial role in shaping employee behaviors, including how they interact. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the impacts of generic and targeted visibility on work-process interactions in open-plan offices. In the first phase, adopting a qualitative approach, this study aimed to detect work-process interaction patterns through a survey in two open-plan offices with 30 employees. Survey questions related to work-process interactions were analyzed through axial analysis. The second phase of the study, adopting a quantitative approach, was conducted through generic and targeted visibility analysis and new codes written for DepthMapX. The outputs of the two phases were analyzed to comprehend the influence of generic and targeted visibility on work-process interactions in open-plan offices. The results showed that density values for 120° and 360° isovists are determinant factors for the number of work-process interactions in all generic and targeted visibility parameters. Moreover, a negative correlation was found between density parameters and the number of work-process interactions. Therefore, it was found that more visible employees per unit in 120° and 360° isovists result in fewer work process interactions in open-plan offices. In other words, it was found that when an employee has a desk with low visual privacy or high visibility, this employee avoids interacting with their colleagues in open-plan offices. Therefore, the study's findings reveal that the impact of visual privacy on work-process interactions in open-plan offices is not as same as previously thought. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that more visibility does not result in more work-process interactions in open-plan offices unless employees’ visual privacy is preserved.Item Open Access The third-party function of Turkey’s Ombudsman Institution in resolving public disputes(Bilkent University, 2022-09) Duran, HazalThis study focuses on the third-party function of ombudsman in resolution of public disputes between the citizens and public institutions and the factors undermine and facilitate its third-party function in the Turkish case. Ombudsman institutions have been evaluated in terms of administrative, legal, and human rights functions for years. Although interest in the ombudsman's dispute resolution function has increased recently, there is a lack of empirical studies of understanding this function. This study aims to fill the void by examining the case of Turkey’s Ombudsman Institution. As one of the youngest ombudsman institutions in the world, the Ombudsman Institution of Turkey has been using the friendly-settlement method since 2017 to increase the dispute resolution capacity. This study firstly quantitatively examines the friendly-settlement method based on 1003 cases. Data shows that despite friendly settlement is associated with informal and interactive dispute resolution in general, its use in the Turkish context is heavily dominated by formal and non-interactive methods. In order to understand the reasons creating this divergence, the study uses 24 semi-structured interviews conducted with experts and senior officials of the institution. Following the analysis of interviews, the study shows that authority, flexibility, network, dispute resolution capacity, and the attitude are five major factors determining ombudsman’s third-party function in the Turkish case. The findings also displays that these factors are causing less interaction and informality in relation to bureaucratic legalism in Turkey.Item Restricted Türkiye'den dünyaya açılan ses: Türkiye'nin Sesi radyosu(Bilkent University, 2023) Artar, Emine Gözde; Deveci, Deniz; Karabulut, Elif; Şahin, Alp; Şahin, SametKitleleri etkilemek ve bir araya getirmek için kullanılan radyo, Türk toplumunda da yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır. The study was conducted at Anadolu University School of Foreign Languages in the spring semester of 2006. The data was collected through students’ audiotaped task completion. The participants in the study were 22 upper-intermediate students and their speaking class teacher. Three different tasks based on four different poems were implemented in the class, and the implementation lasted three weeks. The audiotaped interactions of students were then transcribed by the researcher and analyzed with reference to discourse analysis techniques. The transcripts were analyzed in terms of five aspects, including target language use of students, student interaction, negotiation of meaning, discussion of form and function, and involvement of students. The study demonstrated that students mostly used the target language and that they interacted with each other to complete the tasks, that they mutually negotiated the meaning of their utterances, and talked about the form and function of the language represented in the poems. Finally and overall, it was found that they engaged themselves cognitively as well as affectively in the poems and the tasks.
