However, there is almost no data available regarding the impact of UML diagram utilization in software requirements specification documents on inspection effectiveness. This paper addresses this issue by investigating whether inclusion of UML diagrams impacts the effectiveness of requirements inspection. We conducted an experiment in an academic environment with 35 subjects to empirically investigate the impact of UML diagram inclusion on requirements inspections' effectiveness and the number of reported defects. The results show that including UML diagrams in requirements specification document significantly impacts the number of reported defects, and there is no significant impact on the effectiveness of individual i nspections. © 2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Impact of maintainability defects on code inspections(ACM, 2010) Albayrak, Özlem; Davenport, DavidSoftware inspections are effective ways to detect defects early in the development process. In this paper, we analyze the impact of certain defect types on the effectiveness of code inspection. We conducted an experiment in an academic environment with 88 subjects to empirically investigate the effect of two maintainability defects, i.e., indentation and naming conventions, on the number of functional defects found, the effectiveness of functional defect detections, and the number of false positives reported during individual code inspections. Results show that in cases where both naming conventions and indentation defects exist, the participants found minimum number of defects and reported the highest number of false positives, as compared to the cases where either indentation or naming defects exist. Among maintainability defects, indentation seems to significantly impact the number of functional defects found by the inspector, while the presence of naming conventions defects seems to have no significant impact on the number of functional defects detected. The presence of maintainability defects significantly impacts the number of false positives reported. On the effectiveness of individual code inspectors we observed no significant impact originated from the presence of indentation or naming convention defects. © 2010 ACM.Item Open Access Technical note—optimal procurement in remanufacturing systems with uncertain used-item condition(INFORMS Inst.for Operations Res.and the Management Sciences, 2023-05-08) Nadar, Emre; Akan, Mustafa; Debo, Laurens; Scheller-Wolf, AlanWe consider a single-product remanufacture-to-order system with multiple uncertain quality levels for used items, random procurement lead times, and lost sales. The quality level of a used item is revealed only after it is acquired and inspected; the remanufacturing cost is lower for a higher-quality item. We model this system as a Markov decision process and seek an optimal policy that specifies when a used item should be procured, whether an arriving demand for the remanufactured product should be satisfied, and which available item should be remanufactured to meet this demand. We characterize the optimal procurement policy as following a new type of strategy: state-dependent noncongestive acquisition. This strategy makes decisions, taking into account the system congestion level measured as the number of available items and their quality levels. We also show that it is always optimal to meet the demand with the highest-quality item among the available ones. We conclude with extensions of our model to limited cases when the used-item condition is known a priori (for two quality levels) and remanufacture-to-stock systems in which the standard push strategy is optimal in the remanufacturing stage. © 2023 INFORMS.Item Open Access Univariate X̄ control charts for individual characteristics in a multinormal model(Taylor & Francis, 2000) Serel, D. A.; Moskowitz, H.; Tang, J.The early work on multivariate statistical process control was built upon Hotelling's T2 control chart which was developed to simultaneously monitor the means of correlated quality variables. This chart, however, has a drawback, namely, the problem of identifying the responsible variable(s) when an out-of-control signal occurs. One alternative is to use a separate X̄ control chart for each individual characteristic with equal risks, based on Bonferroni inequality. In this study, we show that, from an economic perspective, it may be desirable to have unequal type I risks for the individual charts, because of different inspection and restoration costs associated with each variable. We obtain their risk ratios, which are measures of relative importance of the variables monitored. Then, based on these risk ratios, we develop computer algorithms for finding the exact control limits for individual variables from a multinormal distribution, in the sense that the overall type I risk of the charts is equal to the desired value. Numerical studies show that the proposed methods give optimal or near-optimal results from an economic as well as statistical point of view.
