Item Open Access Adam Smith's problems: sympathy in the national tale(University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies, 2013) Bartoszynska, K.It is a critical commonplace to read Lady Morgan’s The Wild Irish Girl (1806) and Maria Edgeworth’s Ennui (1809) as national tales that use allegories of marriage to model a successful reconciliation between England and Ireland in the aftermath of the Act of Union. The national tale was a clearly political mode, one with the primary goal of representing Ireland anew to a class of English readers who saw the Irish as hopelessly backward and savage, and thereby articulating a model for the Union on the level of sentiment. This aim was hardly covert: it is openly declared, for example, on the title page of The Wild Irish Girl, which quotes Fazio Delli Uberti’s Travels Though Ireland in the 14th Century: “This race of men, tho’ savage they may seem / The country, too, with many a mountain rough, / Yet are they sweet to him who tries and tastes them. First, this thesis defines power as being or rendering something (in)visible, and influence as changing one's narrative of world politics. Visibility is being socially relevant and mattering to others, and it is operationalized as an actor's frequency of being seen by an audience. Second, this thesis draws a framework for the analysis of the power and influence of international actors on audiences. The methodology is extracted from the operationalization of the components of visibility in the proposed framework of analysis. The power as visibility framework is applied to the case of comparing Erdoğan's power and influence over the mass audience in Türkiye and the Western European elite audience in 2008 and 2020. The material examined by the thesis consists of official speeches and popular culture media. Finally, the thesis concludes with a discussion of the alternative explanations and power as visibility framework.Item Open Access Reconsidering the concept of influence: the case of Turkey’s relations with the Middle East (2003-2014)(2016-06) Ersoy, EyüpThis thesis propounds a new conceptual analysis of influence in international relations. First, it advances a novel definition of influence, with additional clarifications on the relationship between influence and power(s). Second, this thesis addresses the causes of states’ quest for influence in international relations. Third, this thesis presents an analysis of the patterns and causes of variations among these motives in states’ regional foreign policies. Finally, Turkey’s dyadic relationships in the Middle East between 2003 and 2014, specifically with the states of Syria, Iran, and Palestine, constitutes the case study of this thesis.Item Restricted The effects of the Catoni Group in Turkey(Bilkent University, 2020) Kipel, Dilara; Aamer, Hafsah; Nadeem, Taha; Hassan, AizazTurkey has a distinguished culture, however, one must remember that many different races, religions, and cultures existed together under one flag during the Ottoman Empire.
