Unlike the previous studies done for Turkey, in this study the sub-items of the total import demand, namely, intermediate, capital and consumption goods import demand equations are estimated. In empirical analysis, first the cointegration is tested by using two different approaches: Engle-Granger (1987) and Johansen (1991) approach. After finding long-run relationships, error correction models are specified and estimated for export supply and import demand equations respectively. The main conclusion that emerges from empirical results is that foreign trade developments in Turkey are highly dependent on the economic activity and the effects of exchange rate policy on imports and exports appear to be fairly limited.Item Open Access Effects of USD-Euro parity on a small open economy: evidence from Turkey(Routledge, 2008) Berument, Hakan; Yucel, E. M.This study assesses the effect of USD-Euro parity on a small open economy where exports are predominantly denominated in Euros and imports are denominated in USD. Empirical evidence from Turkey suggests that a positive change in the USD value of the Euro appreciates the local currency, decreases inflation and increases output.Item Open Access Exchange rate volatility and exports: a firm-level analysis(Routledge, 2008) Solakoglu, M. N.; Solakoglu, E. G.; Demirag, T.The relationship between real exports and exchange rate volatility is investigated using panel data analysis at the firm level. Results indicate that there is no negative or positive relationship between volatility and real exports. In addition, firm size and level of international activity do not influence the size and significance of the volatility effect on exports. However, there is some evidence that firms use import revenue to lower their exchange rate exposure.Item Open Access Has European customs union agreement really affected Turkey's trade?(Routledge, 2007) Neyaptı, B.; Taşkın, F.; Üngör, M.The numerous discussions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of Turkey's becoming a member of the Customs Union has been inconclusive. The empirical analysis that mostly focus on the changes in the volume of trade without much regard to the conjectural changes have also been insufficient. This study attempts to shed light on this issue in a formal analysis of Turkey's international trade by empirically accounting for the changes before and after the Customs Union Agreement (CUA). In doing so, we explicitly account for the concurrent changes in the macroeconomic environment that may have affected Turkey's trade with the rest of the world. Our empirical findings indicate that CUA has not only positively impacted on Turkey's trade, but also led to changes in the behaviour of both exports and imports with regards to their responsiveness to underlying variables.Item Open Access Turkey: trade policy review(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2005) Togan, S.The purpose of the paper is to discuss the main issues highlighted in the Trade Policy Review: Turkey 2003. The paper studies first the main developments in Turkey's trade regime and trade performance. Next it discusses Turkish trade policy emphasising the measures affecting imports, exports and foreign direct investment. The paper points out that agriculture is highly protected, and that autonomous reforms have been implemented in some of the services sectors of the economy. Since joining the EU will require Turkey to adopt and implement the whole body of EU legislation - the acquis communautaire in all areas, Turkey needs to liberalise its agricultural and services sectors further. Finally, the paper discusses an issue that has largely been neglected in Trade Policy Reviews. It is the sustainability of current account. The paper stresses that Turkey needs to pay close attention to the sustainability of the current account. © Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2005.Item Open Access Turkey: trade policy review, 2007(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2010) Togan, S.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main issues highlighted in the Trade Policy Review: Turkey 2007. The paper studies first the main developments in Turkey's trade regime and trade performance. Next it discusses Turkish trade policy under the headings of measures affecting imports, exports and foreign direct investment. The paper notes that the formation of the 1995 EU-Turkey customs union has contributed to a significant increase in the contestability of domestic markets through infusing predictability, transparency and stability to trade policy as well as by liberalising market access. But free trade in industrial goods between Turkey and the EU could still not be established mainly because of non-tariff barriers and in particular because of the various problems faced in the elimination of technical barriers to trade (TBT). The final section of the paper discusses first the role of standards and conformity assessment in general terms and thereafter evaluates critically the Turkish approach to elimination of TBTs. © 2009 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
