Item Open Access 2-D triangular mesh-based mosaicking for object tracking in the presence of occlusion(SPIE, 1997) Toklu, C.; Tekalp, A. M.; Erdem, A. TanjuIn this paper, we describe a method for temporal tracking of video objects in video clips. We employ a 2D triangular mesh to represent each video object, which allows us to describe the motion of the object by the displacements of the node points of the mesh, and to describe any intensity variations by the contrast and brightness parameters estimated for each node point. Using the temporal history of the node point locations, we continue tracking the nodes of the 2D mesh even when they become invisible because of self-occlusion or occlusion by another object. Uncovered parts of the object in the subsequent frames of the sequence are detected by means of an active contour which contains a novel shape preserving energy term. The proposed shape preserving energy term is found to be successful in tracking the boundary of an object in video sequences with complex backgrounds. By adding new nodes or updating the 2D triangular mesh we incrementally append the uncovered parts of the object detected during the tracking process to the one of the objects to generate a static mosaic of the object. Also, by texture mapping the covered pixels into the current frame of the video clip we can generate a dynamic mosaic of the object. The proposed mosaicing technique is more general than those reported in the literature because it allows for local motion and out-of-plane rotations of the object that results in self-occlusions. Using MDPs, we calculate average reward optimal policies so as to maximize the on time delivery probability of video frames in the transmission window while conforming to network-imposed available bandwidth constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by comparing the results with theoretically obtained rate-distortion curves corresponding to the optimal policies by using the distortion model in [2] © 2006 IEEE.Item Open Access Detection of microcalcifications in mammograms using nonlinear subband decomposition and outlier labeling(SPIE, 1997-02) Gürcan, M. Nafi; Yardımcı, Yasemin C.; Çetin, A. Enis; Ansari, R.Computer-aided diagnosis will be an important feature of the next generation picture archiving and communication systems. In this paper, computer-aided detection of microcalcifications in mammograms using a nonlinear subband decomposition and outlier labeling is examined. The mammogram image is first decomposed into subimages using a nonlinear subband decomposition filter bank. A suitably identified subimage is divided into overlapping square regions in which skewness and kurtosis as measures of the asymmetry and impulsiveness of the distribution are estimated. A region with high positive skewness and kurtosis is marked as a region of interest. Finally, an outlier labeling method is used to find the locations of microcalcifications in these regions. Simulation studies are presented.Item Open Access Distributed interactive video system design and analysis(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 1997) Wu, Tsong-Ho; Korpeoglu, I.; Cheng, Bo-ChaoThe interactive video (IV) market has been expected to capture a significant share of the huge potential revenues to be generated by the business and residential markets. The level of revenues generated depends on the completion rate of calls the service provider can support, no matter what the IV system or network condition. Thus, a cost-effective, scalable fault-tolerant IV system is needed to maximize the video call completion rate at an affordable cost. This article describes design methodologies for a scalable, fault-tolerant IV system and an IV system design and analysis research prototype called IVSDNA (IV System Designer and Analyzer). The IVSDNA prototype is designed to help network planners and engineers to evaluate quantitative trade-offs (in terms of network communications costs, video storage costs, and degree of system fault tolerance) between two major IV system architectures (centralized and distributed) with a variety of video distribution methods, replication strategies, and fault-tolerant access protocols.Item Open Access Impact of scalability in video transmission in promotion-capable differentiated services networks(IEEE, 2002-09) Gürses, E.; Akar, G. B.; Akar, NailTransmission of high quality video over the Internet faces many challenges including unpredictable packet loss characteristics of the current Internet and the heterogeneity of receivers in terms of their bandwidth and processing capabilities. To address these challanges, we propose an architecture in this paper that is based on the temporally scalable and error resilient video coding mode of the H.263+ codec. In this architecture, the video frames will be transported over a new generation IP network that supports differentiated services (Diffserv). We also propose a novel Two Rate Three Color Promotion-Capable Marker (trTCPCM) to be used at the edge of the diffserv network. Our simulation study demonstrates that an average of 30 dB can be achieved in case of highly congested links.Item Open Access Key frame selection from MPEG video data(SPIE, 1997-02) Gerek, Ömer. N.; Altunbaşak, Y.This paper describes a method for selecting key frames by using a number of parameters extracted from the MPEG video stream. The parameters are directly extracted from the compressed video stream without decompression. A combination of these parameters are then used in a rule based decision system. The computational complexity for extracting the parameters and for key frame decision rule is very small. As a results, the overall operation is very quickly performed and this makes our algorithm handy for practical purposes. The experimental results show that this method can select the distinctive frames of video streams successfully.Item Open Access Multiresolution block coding method for visualization of compressed images in multimedia applications(Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, 1994) Gerek, O. N.; Cetin, E. A.Multimedia and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) applications require efficient ways of handling images for communication and visualization. In many Visual Information and Management Systems (VIMS), it may be required to get quick responses to queries. Usually, a VIMS database has a huge number of images and may provide lots of images for each query. For example, in a PACS, the VIMS provides 10 to 100 images for a typical query. Only a few of these images may actually be needed. In order to find the useful ones, the user has to preview each image by fully decompressing it. This is neither computationally efficient, nor user friendly. In this paper, we propose a scheme which provides a magnifying glass type previewing feature. With this method, a multiresolution previewing without decompressing the whole image is possible. Our scheme is based on block transform coding which is the most widely used technique in image and video coding. In the first step of our scheme, all of the queried images are displayed in the lowest possible resolution (constructed from the DC coefficients of the coded blocks). If the user requests more information for a region of a particular image by specifying its size and place, then that region is hierarchically decompressed and displayed. In this way, large amounts of computations and bandwidth usage are avoided and a good user interface is accomplished. This method changes the ordering strategy of transform coefficients, thus reduces the compression ratio, however this effect is small.Item Open Access Optimal packet scheduling and rate control for video streaming(SPIE, 2007) Gürses, E.; Bozdağı-Akar, G.; Akar, NailIn this paper, we propose a new low-complexity retransmission based optimal video streaming and rate adaptation algorithm. The proposed OSRC (Optimal packet Scheduling and Rate Control) algorithm provides average reward optimal solution to the joint scheduling and rate control problem. The efficacy of the OSRC algorithm is demonstrated against optimal FEC based schemes and results are verified over TFRC (TCP Friendly Rate Control) transport with ns-2 simulations.Item Open Access A performance evaluation framework of a rate-controlled MPEG video transmission over UMTS networks(IEEE, 2007-07) Akar, Nail; Barbera, M.; Budzisz, L.; Ferrùs, R.; Kankaya, Emre; Schembra, G.UMTS is designed to offer high bandwidth radio access with QoS assurances for multimedia communications. In particular, real-time video communications services are expected to become a successful experience under UMTS networks. In this context, a video transmission service can be designed over the basis that UMTS can provide either a constant bit rate data channel or a dynamic variable bit rate data channel adapted to load conditions. In this latter approach, which is more efficient for both the user and the service provider, multimedia sources have to be timely designed in order to adapt their output rate to the instantaneous allowed channel rate. The target of this paper is to define an analytical model of adaptive real-time video sources in a UMTS network where system resources are dynamically shared among active users. © 2007 IEEE.Item Open Access Rate-distortion optimized layered stereoscopic video streaming with raptor codes(IEEE, 2007) Tan, A. Serdar; Aksay, A.; Bilen, C.; Bozdağı-Akar, G.; Arıkan, ErdalA near optimal streaming system for stereoscopic video is proposed. Initially, the stereoscopic video is separated into three layers and the approximate analytical model of the Rate-Distortion (RD) curve of each layer is calculated from sufficient number of rate and distortion samples. The analytical modeling includes the interdependency of the defined layers. Then, the analytical models are used to derive the optimal source encoding rates for a given channel bandwidth. The distortion in the quality of the stereoscopic video that is caused by losing a NAL unit from the defined layers is estimated to minimize the average distortion of a single NAL unit loss. The minimization is performed over protection rates allocated to each layer. Raptor codes are utilized as the error protection scheme due to their novelty and suitability in video transmission. The layers are protected unequally using Raptor codes according to the parity ratios allocated to the layers. Comparison of the defined scheme with two other protection allocation schemes is provided via simulations to observe the quality of stereoscopic video.Item Open Access Three-dimensional motion and dense-structure estimation using convex projections(SPIE, 1997-02) Alatan, A. Aydın; Erdem, A. Tanju; Onural, LeventWe propose a novel method for estimating the 3D motion and dense structure of an object form its two 2D images. The proposed method is an iterative algorithm based on the theory of projections onto convex sets (POCS) that involves successive projections onto closed convex constraint sets. We seek a solution for the 3D motion and structure information that satisfies the following constraints: (i) rigid motion - the 3D motion parameters are the same for each point on the object. (ii) Smoothness of the structure - depth values of the neighboring points on the object vary smoothly. (iii) Temporal correspondence - the intensities in the given 2D images match under the 3D motion and structure parameters. We mathematically derive the projection operators onto these sets and discuss the convergence properties of successive projections. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly improves the initial motion and structure estimates.
