Item Open Access Apocalypse Now : pro-war sentiments in an "anti-war" film(2007) Danış, BaranIn this study, the film Apocalypse Now is analyzed in terms of its ideological function and messages by using the textualist approach of screen theory. The film is examined as both a pro-war and anti-war film which reveals the U.S.’s ambivalence toward the Vietnam War both politically and cinematically. Although Apocalypse Now seems to oppose the war and is generally considered an anti-war film, the visual style of some scenes and certain discursive constructions of the film allow a pro-war reading. The film is analyzed especially in terms of its mythic structure, the subject positions it creates for the spectator, and the ideology of realism within it.Item Open Access An architectural and conceptual analysis of Mesopotamian temples from the Ubaid to the old Babylonian period(2007) Soudipour, Amir H.This study attempts to explore the architecture of Mesopotamian temples from the Ubaid to the Old Babylonian period. It analyses the ways in which the layout of the temples changed and developed through time. It argues how different factors such as ideology, cosmology, religion and environment were reflected in the architecture and function of temple complexes. The thesis also looks closely at the concept of the temple as the house of god, and by comparing the selected temples of different periods to the domestic architecture of the same period, aims to trace the influence and reflection of the domestic structure on the sacred structure and to determine in which period the structural similarity reaches its zenith and declines. Changes in Mesopotamia’s social organization can be linked to these changes in temple layoutItem Restricted Bahçelievler Deneme Anadolu Lisesi'nin tarihi(Bilkent University, 2019) Dağdeviren, Ulvi Cihan; Gül, Burak Can; Kumantaş, Aysimay Işık; Yaman, Yiğit Can; Koç, İlhan1955 yılından 1990’lı yıllara kadar olan dönemde Bahçelievler Deneme Lisesi’nin kuruluşu ve gelişimi bunu yanında da Türkiye’nin genel atmosferinin ve okulun eğitim sisteminin değişmesi sonucu kalitesinin düşmesi gözlemlenmiştir. Following an investigation of the nature and basic dimensions of party’s conventional ideology, the main focus will be on the fundamental transformation that occurred in the mid 1990s under the leadership of Tony Blair. The thesis argues that contemporary Labour Party does not offer a political vision beyond the new-right, rather its electoral success lies in its reconciliation with the basics of Thatcherism in an era when the Conseiwative Party lost its popularity.Item Open Access Hamidian epic: war literature in the late nineteenth century ottoman empire(2016-05) Çekiç, Can EyüpThis study explores the ways in which epic literature represented, supported, and legitimized the Ottoman regime and its ideology in the late nineteenth century. During the Hamidian Era (1876–1908), reinventing an authentic source, an old genre in the Ottoman literature, for its social and political desires, the regime became resourceful to create a harmonious relationship and prevented potential antagonisms between imperial objectives and popular nationalisms. Epic literature reproduced, created, and promoted a sacred aura around the Ottoman dynasty and the personality of Abdülhamid II. In line with this, epic themes refashioned the concept of ghaza and re-invented the image of the ghazi sultan to confront nationalist and/or constitutionalist criticisms and to consolidate the political power of the ruling dynasty and the sovereign.Item Open Access Iconic brands: a socio-material story(Sage Publications, 2010) Kravets, O.; Örge, Ö.This article takes the story of a monument to a Soviet brand of cheese as a starting point for discussing the socio-material practices that underlie the elevation of some brands to iconic status in the post-Soviet context. While the literature on iconic or 'symbolically dense' brands primarily focuses on shared meanings and ideas that iconic goods come to stand for, we argue that a material perspective provides a richer and more nuanced understanding of this consecration process. Accordingly, we consider the manifold material forms and practices through which the iconic status of some Soviet goods is constituted and identify (perceived) material constancy, monumentalization and legal codification as three main realms through which the transcendent socio-cultural values of these brands are contested and established. We take the story of a monument to a brand as a challenge to bringing the notion of materiality into a more explicit and dynamic relationship with signification, thus moving from the separation of the two notions. Such a move, we suggest, helps elaborate the role of iconic consumer goods in re-constructing social bonds, community identities and ideology. © The Author(s), 2010.Item Open Access The ideology and textbooks : "Turkish Republic history of renovation and Ataturkism" textbooks (1980-1990)(1998) Gürleyen, İşıkThis study aims to analyze the specific understanding of history in the 1980s in Turkey. It is argued that this particular historical understanding is ideologically shaped by Kemalism and Turkish-Islamic Synthesis discourse. These two contradictory and complementary views exist together in the "Turkish Republic History of Renovation and Ataturkism" textbooks, which are used as a tool to convey the regime's ideological stance to the high-school students. In this context, these textbooks are examined in terms of their contents with regard to an identity formation characterized by nationalist, statist, religious but secular values. Item Open Access Local determinants of an emerging electoral hegemony: the case of Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey(Routledge, 2016) Çınar, Kürşat“Party hegemony” is a macro-level characteristic of party systems, which is a product of persistent and overwhelming electoral victories that leads to domination of the parliamentary system by a single party. Party hegemony can only emerge through a collection of individual-level (albeit aggregated), lower-level structural, and macro-level institutional factors. This article intends to shed light on hegemonic party systems by incorporating all of these aspects. It analyses the case of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey as a hegemonic party in the making. Based on individual-level survey data as well as an original province-level dataset, the article examines the role of ideology, pork barrel politics, economic voting, demographics, and political institutions in AKP's rising hegemony. The replicable nature of the dataset enables further testing of these findings in comparable cases for generalizability.Item Restricted On yıl sonra 'Sevgili arsız ölüm'e bakış(1993) Moran, BernaItem Open Access The 'politics of intimate' at the intersection of neo-liberalism and neo-conservtism in contemporary Turkey(Elsevier, 2013) Acar, F.; Altunok, G.This paper aims to review the ‘politics of the intimate’ in the Turkish context. By looking at regulations and policy debates in the areas of sexuality, reproduction and family and partnership in the 2000s, it critically analyzes the scope and content of state policies, as well as the policy debates in these areas, from a gender and gender equality perspective. This analysis further emphasizes the interaction between neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism, two political rationalities that have come to play important roles in the shaping or regulation of public and private domains, and the relations within these domains, in the last decade in Turkey. This paper will suggest that given the intermesh of neoliberal and neoconservative rationalities, the notion of gender equality loses its significance, leaving disadvantaged groups open to the detrimental effects of dominant power relations.Item Open Access Representations of “Kanal İstanbul” in Turkish news media: content analysis of pro-government and oppositional newspapers(2022-09) Hamamcı, EzgiThis thesis examines the representations of the Kanal Istanbul project in online news articles published in Turkish pro-government and opposition newspapers with different political and ideological orientations. Five newspapers with different political and ideological perspectives, Sözcü, Cumhuriyet, Yeni Akit, Karar, and Sabah, are analyzed in terms of news content. In the study, news articles about Kanal Istanbul are analyzed under different categories such as the attitude of the news, the general tone of the news, the political figures in the news, the sources used in the news, and the theme of the news. The time scale of quantitative and qualitative content analysis covers the years between 2011 and 2022. Since there is not enough news text for analysis between 2011-2016, the news texts between 2016-2022 are included in the study. Focusing on the representations of the Kanal Istanbul project in the context of media framing theory, this thesis aims to reveal the ideological reflections in news representation by considering the principles of objectivity and impartiality in journalism practices.Item Open Access The Role and influence of "Nationalist Action Party" in Turkish political life(1999) Arslan, EmreThis thesis is an attempt to explain and explore the role and influence of Nationalist Action Party (МНР) in Turkish political life. This study examines the rise of МНР in recent years both as a political party and as a political movement. For this reason, MHP’s role and influence is evaluated in terms of its origins, history, strategies and ideologies. Fruthermore, the changing role and influence of the party is assesed within the context of changing historical conditions. In this period, a crises of dominant ideologies has influenced the rise of МНР and its ideology. Kemalism, which is deemed as the official ideology of Turkish state and society throughout the history of Republic, has been challenged by Islamist movements and Kurdish nationalism in 1990s. Furthermore, the New Right as the hegemonic ideology of 1980s has lost its appeal and employed an extreme nationalist discourse to a great extent in recent years. In the ideological climate of 1990s, which is strongly influenced by competing, intermixing and changing nationalisms, the МНР nationalism has become a rising and influential ideology by articulating the dominant ideologies. Within the framework of above argument, this study adresses the changing ideology and political strategies of the МНР.Item Restricted Romanlar ve ideolojiler(1980) Naci, FethiItem Open Access Russia's "pure spirit": vodka branding and its politics(Sage Publications, 2012) Kravets, O.This article examines the interplay of vodka branding and politics in post-Soviet Russia. The trajectory of vodka branding over the past three decades reflects shifts in politics and articulates changes in ideology, while setting the environment in which certain sociopolitical ideas unfold and become naturalized. The analysis suggests that the political economy and historical dynamics of a market system, and the societal standing of the commodity being branded, define and frame the potentialities of marketing meanings and their ideological inflections. © The Author(s) 2012.Item Open Access Seeing modernization through the eyes of periphery: a narratological analysis of Nazım Hikmet ran’s Memleketimden İnsan Manzaraları(2022-08) Türközü, Ece BüşraThis thesis examines the narratological structure and characteristics of Nazım Hikmet Ran’s Memleketimden İnsan Manzaraları (Human Landscapes From My Country). The poem is a critique of Turkish modernization followed by the foundation of the Republic due to its ignorance towards the periphery, mainly, the peasants. Not only the events narrated in the text, but also how they are narrated embodies the ideology of the poem. The thesis aims at demonstrating the use of narratology in political and cultural readings not being limited to superficial theme analysis. Theoretically based on Mieke Bal’s practice of narratology in cultural readings, this thesis explores the possible ways of analyzing the narratology of the text in a way supporting Hikmet’s concern in writing the poem. The poem consists of five books and the thesis focuses on each of them considering a different theme and a different kind of analysis, including the change in the narrator-focalizor, the use of description, the space in relation to characters, the movie-like features of the text, and the snapshot effect created by the narration. The thesis also aims at taking the notion of self-narrative into the scope of analysis of narratology and use it in a way to offer a more individual-focused alternative for reading a non-western modernity to Gregory Jusdanis’ model of belatedness and Daryush Shayegan’s model of disfiguration.Item Restricted Şiir ve ideoloji(1992) Sağlamöz, GürselItem Restricted Şiir ve ideoloji(1982) Cengizhan, GökhanItem Restricted The fate of philosophy in the 20th century(1962) Aiken, Henry
