Item Open Access The hub covering problem over incomplete hub networks(2006) Kalaycılar, MuratThe rising trend in the transportation and telecommunication systems increases the importance of hub location studies in recent years. Hubs are special types of facilities in many-to-many distribution systems where flows are consolidated and disseminated. Analogous to location models, p-hub median, p-hub center and hub covering problems have been studied in the literature. In this thesis, we focus on a special type of hub covering problem which we call as “Hub Covering Problem over Incomplete Hub Networks”. Most of the studies in the hub location literature assume that the hub nodes are fully interconnected. We observe that, especially in cargo delivery systems, hub network is not complete. Thus, in this study we relax this fundamental assumption and propose integer programming models for single and multi allocation cases of the hub covering problem. We also propose three heuristics for both single and multi allocation cases of the problem. During the computational performance of proposed models and heuristics, CAB data was used. Results and comparisons of these heuristics will also be discussed.Item Open Access The latest arrival hub location problem(Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORM), 2001) Kara, B. Ç.The traditionally studied hub location problems in the literature pay attention to flight times but not to transient times spent at hubs for unloading, loading, and sorting operations. The transient times may constitute a significant portion of the total delivery time for cargo delivery systems. We focus on the minimization of the arrival time of the last arrived item in cargo delivery systems and develop a model that correctly computes the arrival times by taking into account both the flight times and the transient times. Nonlinear and linear integer formulations are given and computational results are provided. The effects of delays on the system performance are analyzed.Item Open Access Release Time Scheduling and Hub Location for Next-Day Delivery(INFORMS, 2012-02-01) Yaman, H.; Karasan, O. E.; Kara, B. Y.Inspired by a real-life problem faced by one of the largest ground-based cargo companies of Turkey, the current study introduces a new facet to the hub location literature. The release time scheduling and hub location problem aims to select a specified number of hubs from a fixed set of demand centers, to allocate each demand center to a hub, and to decide on the release times of trucks from each demand center in such a way that the total amount of cargo guaranteed to be delivered to every potential destination by the next day is not below a threshold and the total routing cost is minimized. The paper introduces integer programming models to solve this problem in the special cases when the cargo uniformly arrives to each demand center during the day and the more realistic pattern of when the cargo arrivals exhibit a piecewise linear form. Several classes of valid inequalities are proposed to strengthen the formulations. Extensions with multiple service levels and discrete sets for release times are also discussed. Computational results show the computational viability of the models under realistic scenarios as well as the validity of the proposed problems in answering several interesting questions from the cargo sector’s perspective.
