Early daggers in Anatolia – a necessary reappraisal
(Trnavska Univerzita * Filozoficka Fakulta, 2006) Zimmermann, T.
This paper aims to give a conspectus of the earliest double-edged stabbing weapons in Anatolia, precisely identifying them as daggers through a clear functional and technological definition. Early lithic daggers from Pre-Pottery Neolithic contexts are discussed, but the main focus is on a chronological re-evaluation of metal inventories from İkiztepe in Turkey, which are officially labeled as “Bronze Age”, but are highly likely to be roughly 1,000 years older, fitting in well with the overall scheme of Anatolian -Balkan interactions in the 4th millennium BC.

Fine feathers make paper tigers: How the out-of-date superiority of "the other" gets propped up in advertisements
    (2006) Riley, A.N.
Functional myths often underlie widely subscribed epithets. In particular, one of the social functions of myths concerning the superiority of "the other" is to provide a basis for definitions of prestige. In examples drawn from contemporary advertising, the prestige of those who promote such myths depends upon "the other's having long appeared superior. For if "the other" does not tend to appear superior, a "success" defined relative to that other may be perceived as merely mediocre performance. Ultimately, modern advertising can be said to validate Lord Raglan's conception of functional myths.

Function as an object : a study on apps
    (2012) Pak, Murat
This study analyzes function of objects within the framework of digital technologies and relates the function with how we design and perceive technical artifacts. The main purpose of this examination is to change the way we approach to functions and reconsider them within the boundaries of use and design. The key element of this study is how applications are positioned in the social structure.

Inorganic compounds and teleological explanation in Aristotle’s meteorology 4.12
    (Brill, 2024-09-23) Krizan, Mary Katrina
Aristotle’s Meteorology 4.12 is puzzling, in part because the chapter appears to extend teleological explanation to include certain inorganic materials without natural biological functions, such as metals and stone. This paper examines two attempts to explain why such materials can have functions, and shows that they are problematic. As an alternative, I argue that raw inorganic materials—as well as separated parts of organisms—can have extrinsic functions. Extrinsic functions can explain why natural inorganic materials can be sorted into natural kinds, even if their functions are ultimately related to their uses in the productive arts.
