Adaptation and nostalgia

This essay highlights the shared critical terrain of adaptation and nostalgia: how they critically juxtapose the past with the present, and how they underscore the impossibility of return while also relying on prior experience. It also explores nostalgia’s effect on personal responses to adaptations and its interaction with textual form. Drawing from various areas of literary, media, and performance studies, including film adaptations of children’s literature, Watchmen and its screen adaptations, and Disney’s live-action remakes, this essay underscores how both nostalgia and adaptation are inherently multivalent concepts, and how they each rely on perspective to generate critical meaning.

Efficient fast hartley transform algorithms for hypercube-connected multicomputers

Although fast Hartley transform (FHT) provides efficient spectral analysis of real discrete signals, the literature that addresses the parallelization of FHT is extremely rare. FHT is a real transformation and does not necessitate any complex arithmetics. On the other hand, FHT algorithm has an irregular computational structure which makes efficient parallelization harder. In this paper, we propose a efficient restructuring for the sequential FHT algorithm which brings regularity and symmetry to the computational structure of the FHT. Then, we propose an efficient parallel FHT algorithm for medium-to-coarse grain hypercube multicomputers by introducing a dynamic mapping scheme for the restructured FHT. The proposed parallel algorithm achieves perfect load-balance, minimizes both the number and volume of concurrent communications, allows only nearest-neighbor communications and achieves in-place computation and communication. The proposed algorithm is implemented on a 32-node iPSC/21 hypercube multicomputer. High-efficiency values are obtained even for small size FHT problems. © 1995 IEEE

From rural to urban from verse to prose the transformation in elegy: Bariş Manço

Elegy is a genre in literature which is generally thought with death and which cannot be defined clearly. Scholars tried to define the features of elegy by observing elegies in rural areas. Elegy's features are composed of two main parts: Formal features and features of its content. Is the tradition of elegy, forgotten or is it is still alive in urban areas? The observations show that, during the changing and conversion process from rural life to city life, while elegy keeps its content, it continues living in cities by adapting its formal features to city life. In this paper, the changes and conversions of elegy will be discussed with the example of Bariş Manço. It is observed that, after his death, news, articles and programs on media about him had the content features of elegy. So, it is possible to say that, elegy, which is a part of rural life, continues living in city life in a way.

Influences of structural systems on form and space integrity of free-form buildings: an investigation through case studies

Free-form architecture is a contemporary design language that challenges traditional geometric forms in architectural design. It is characterized by its complex and irregular shapes, which are mainly achieved through advanced digital design and fabrication technologies. However, free-form buildings may overly prioritize form over structural rationality and spatial quality because of their irregular nature. Therefore, the potentials and limitations of their flexibility need to be investigated through the architectural components, structure, form, and space. This thesis investigates the potential of structural systems which are an aesthetic and inventive medium for shaping and experiencing free-form buildings. It is intended to determine and evaluate structural systems' influences on form and space integrity of free-form buildings. With this framework, seventeen selected pioneering free-form buildings are investigated through an in-depth analysis that is resulted in a tabular report which involves specific structural, formal, and spatial analysis with a general assessment part. As a result, it has been determined that the design process for a free-form building needs to be more integrated to ensure the integrity of form and space. Moreover, the findings indicate that contemporary free-form buildings contain overly complex hierarchical structural organization, such as primary and secondary systems. Consequently, designing structural systems that seamlessly integrate with such buildings' form and spatial configurations necessitates a distinct perspective and specialized design knowledge. In line with these findings, this thesis suggests that an integrated design process should be supported by a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of structural systems, their hierarchical organization and how they simultaneously effect formal and spatial configurations.

Literature, economics, and a turn to content

In much of the recent scholarship on economics and literature, the depth of insight is inversely proportional to the status claimed for literature as such. For example, Gary Saul Morson and Morton Schapiro’s Cents and Sensibility argues that economists need to read literary works for their great moral wisdom, and they fault literary scholars for ignoring this appeal and for failing to understand basic economics. But as this survey of recent publications demonstrates, the conjunction of these critiques is odd: literary critics have been skeptical of claims about genuine value precisely because they have attended so closely to the markets structuring cultural production. What ultimately stands out in recent scholarship on economics and literature is its turn away from complex accounts of the nature of literary form and its turn toward considerations of the representation of economic life.

Monitor: re-imagining the clock tower an artist research on form, chain reaction and duration

Monitor is a re-imagination of a clock tower, which re-conceptualizes the passing of time in a way that all moving elements inside the city outdoors become the units of the timekeeping activity. Abandoning the conventional approaches that frame time as a homogeneous entity, I make use of Bergson’s description of dura, and rethink the socalled homogeneity rather as a heterogeneous structure composed of distinct durations that are constantly intersecting with each other, and, produce infinite amount of arbitrary arrangements. This thesis offers a concept of an urban media sculpture that mirrors the movement of the people in outdoor settings, by collecting the real-time data from public monitoring systems. In doing so, the theory and the practice became intricate which makes the main focus of this thesis principally to celebrate the process of artistic research.

This study aims at evaluating the aesthetic views of Immanuel Kant. The experience of the beautiful and that of the sublime are discussed. The experience of the beautiful is analysed with respect to the faculties of imagination and understanding and the notion of free play. The experience of sublime is defined as the moment of facing the transcendental I as the original condition of all possible human experience.
