Item Open Access Cultural dimension of the relations between Turkey and the European Union(1999) Boztaş, FadimeThe relations between The European Union and Turkey is one of the problematic issues of International Relations. However, by now the debate revolved around a limited scope considering economic, political and security issues. Evaluating Turkey’s longing for the membership to The European Union only with the explanation of; searching for a strong economic partner would be incomplete. The initiator of this motivation is the identity crisis of Turkish society. Turkey being a society in between; modern and traditional, secular and Muslim, Eastern and Western, wants to settle this discussion being a part of Europe. This reality evokes the unvoiced dimension of cultural incompatibility and power of the cultural boundaries, assessing the relations. This study tries to carve out the importance of culture and identity related issues in Turkey and The European Union relations within the parameters of Critical Theory and seeks answers to the questions; To what extend Turkey can be a part of Europe?’ and To what extend Europe can enlarge its cultural boundaries?’.Item Open Access Turkey and the European Union after Customs Union: a reassessment of the relations(1997) Wech, Michael NiklasItem Open Access Turkey's cultural integration with the European Union (Religion as a factor)(2007) Gürçel, TuğbaTurkey’s integration with the European Union has been investigated through different lenses. When Turkey gained candidacy status in 1999 Helsinki Summit, the discussion about Turkey’s cultural/religious dissimilarity with the Union became more noticeable. In this context, Turkey’s compatibility with the European norms, with specific reference to different religion, needed an attentive investigation. Turkey’s fidelity to laicism in the existence of a majority Muslim population is of great significance in Turkey’s cultural integration with the EU. The fundamentality of religion factor for the European identity and potential contribution of laic Turkey to this identity with its different religion/culture are the major issues that are tried to be analyzed. This thesis also tries to display what laic Turkey will bring into the EU in cultural terms in the case of its full membership. It is concluded that Turkey’s integration with the EU is at a bottle neck because of its different cultural/religious tradition. Nevertheless, it is not a deadlock. This impediment can be overcome with proper understanding of each other and with willingness for integration that embraces both European and Turkish cultures.Item Open Access The way towards customs union: a policy-analysis of the negotations between actors of the European Union and Turkey(1997) Kemper, ChristianIn this paper, Turkey-EU negotiations in 1995 leading to a customs union (CU) by January 1996 are to be analyzed. An approach that focuses on actors and issues is chosen to reflect upon the supranational character of the negotiations. It is stated that there are interest-coalitions on supranational, national, and intergovernmental levels over and above the EU-Turkey divide. In a first step, the focus will be on the supranational actors within the EU-organs. It is assumed, that EU's integration logic and mechanisms also work in the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy. In the second part, the actions of Turkey's actors on different levels shall on one hand be examined with regard to their interaction with the EU-actors, on the other hand with regard to their impact on domestic changes, which have been required by the EU to bring about the Customs Union.Agreement (CUA) The third part reexamines economic issues at the heart of the Agreement, whereas the fourth part deals with political issues, which have been excluded from the Agreement, but still pose the largest obstacle to further rapprochement.
