An equipment replacement problem with dynamic production planning and capacity considerations
    (Taylor & Francis, 1996) Gill, A.; Adil, G. K.; Bector, C. R.
In this paper, we propose a 0-1 integer programming formulation for an equipment replacement problem in which the demand of a product varies from period to period and different types of equipment with different production capacities are available. Since all the variables involved in the model are restricted to have binary values, the model is fairly efficient and hence can be used for large-sized problems. The use of the model is demonstrated with the help of some numerical examples.

An integrated process planning approach for CNC machine tools
    (Springer-Verlag, 1996) Aktürk, M. S.; Avcı, S.
In view of the high investment and tooling cost of a CNC machining centre, the cutting and idle times should be optimised by considering the tool consumption and the non-machining time cost components. In this paper, we propose a detailed mathematical model for the operation of a CNC machine tool which includes the system characterisation, the cutting conditions and tool life relationship, and related constraints. This new module will be a part of an overall computer-aided process planning system to improve the system effectiveness and to provide consistent process plans. A hierarchical approach is presented for finding tool-operation assignments, machining conditions, appropriate tool magazine organisation and an operations sequence which results in the minimum production cost. © 1996 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

An ontology-based universal design knowledge support system
(Elsevier, 2011-05) Afacan, Yasemin; Demirkan, H.
An effective and efficient knowledge support system is crucial for universal design process, as it has become a major design issue in the last decade with the growth of the elderly population and disabled people. There are a limited number of CAD investigations on the nature of knowledge processing that supports the cognitive activities of universal design process. Therefore, this paper proposes an ontology-based computer-assisted universal design (CAUD) plug-in tool that supports designers in developing satisfactory universal design solutions in the conceptual design phase. The required knowledge processing and representation of the developed tool is motivated by the ontological language. It is based on the multiple divergence-convergence cognitive strategies and cognitive needs of designers in the analysis/synthesis/evaluation operations. The CAUD plug-in tool is the first attempt to interface the universal design knowledge ontologically and respond to the requirements of conceptual design phase. According to the user acceptance study, the tool is assessed as useful, understandable, efficient, supportive and satisfactory.

Optimization of the gain-bandwidth product of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers
    (IEEE, 2005-12) Olcum, S.; Senlik, M. N.; Atalar, Abdullah
Capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (cMUT) have large bandwidths, but they typically have low conversion efficiencies. This paper defines a performance measure in the form of a gain-bandwidth product and investigates the conditions in which this performance measure is maximized. A Mason model corrected with finite-element simulations is used for the purpose of optimizing parameters. There are different performance measures for transducers operating in transmit, receive, or pulse-echo modes. Basic parameters of the transducer are optimized for those operating modes. Optimized values for a cMUT with silicon nitride membrane and immersed in water are given. The effect of including an electrical matching network is considered. In particular, the effect of a shunt inductor in the gain-bandwidth product is investigated. Design tools are introduced, which are used to determine optimal dimensions of cMUTs with the specified frequency or gain response.

A photometric investigation of ultra-efficient LEDs with high color rendering index and high luminous efficacy employing nanocrystal quantum dot luminophores
(Optical Society of America, 2009-12-24) Erdem, T.; Nizamoglu, S.; Sun, X. W.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan
We report a photometric study of ultra-efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs) that exhibit superior color rendering index (CRI) and luminous efficacy of optical radiation (LER) using semiconductor quantum dot nanocrystal (NC) luminophores. Over 200 million systematically varied NC-LED designs have been simulated to understand feasible performance in terms of CRI vs. LER. We evaluated the effects of design parameters including peak emission wavelength, full-width-at-half-maximum, and relative amplitudes of each NC color component on LED performance. Warm-white LEDs with CRI >90 and LER >380 lm/W at a correlated color temperature of 3000 K are shown to be achieved using nanocrystal luminophores. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America
