Item Open Access Baku expedition of 1917-1918 : a study of the Ottoman policy towards the Caucasus(2007) Murgul, YalçınThe Ottoman expedition to Baku has central importance in Caucasus between the Bolshevik Revolution and end of the WWI. Since the Ottoman expedition to Baku was the most concrete action towards domination of the area, it served as the main determinant in the formation of relations between the Great Powers and the Caucasian people fighting for their sovereignty in the period until October 1918. This thesis based on a multi-sided bibliography, attempts to study the Baku Operation of the CaucasusIslam Army commanded by Nuri Pasha in the course of the First World War in detail by analyzing both political and military processes and international dimensions, with a detailed picture of the whole process. By placing the Ottoman Operation at the centre, it aims to analyze the perception of both sides of the international struggle over Baku. iv Since the studies on the Committee of Union and Progress and Enver Pasha give special place to the issue of Pan-Turkism, this study argues that Ottoman Army’s Baku operation has a special place in Ottoman history as one of practical implementations of Pan-Turkist policies and it has an important role in the shaping of Azerbaijani National Movement in Transcaucasia. The thesis is divided into three parts. These are “The Ottoman State’s Caucasus Policy from the February Revolution to Batum Treaties”, “The General Situation in Transcaucasia before Baku Operation”, and “The CaucasusIslam Army’s Baku Operation”. In this context Germany, Soviet Russia and Britain’s strategies in the region will also be considered.Item Open Access The beginnings of Ottoman-German partnership : diplomatic and military relations between Germany and the Ottoman Empire before the First World War(2003) Öncü, EdipThis thesis analyses the course and nature of Ottoman-German diplomatic and military relations before the First World War. It suggests that Germany and the Ottoman Empire acted according to their own political interests since their first interaction at the beginning of the eighteenth century, although their diplomatic relations were mostly cordial. Far from being close collaborative partners before the First World War, the eventual alliance of the two empires during the war was the natural outcome of each empire’s own political and military objectives rather than the outcome of their friendship before the war. The thesis also studies the Baghdad Railroad Project, the Russian threat against Germany as well as the Ottomans, the German military reform missions to the army of the Sultan, and the political situation in the Empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Item Open Access Enver Pasha and the political currents in the late Ottoman period(2000) Özmen, Ayşe GülruThis thesis analyzes the dominant political currents in the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the twentieth century- namely Pan- Turkism, PanIslamism, Ottomanism- and aims to figure out which of these currents that Enver Pasha mostly emphasized. Within this context, the emergence of the Pan- movements, competing ideologies in the late Ottoman period, the role of Enver Pasha within the CUP and his activities and statements which can be incorporated with these ideologies will be discussed. The thesis also trace the different arguments made by historians regarding the political preferences of Enver Pasha. It will seek to answer questions such as, which of these ideologies Enver Pasha used interchangebly, what were the external and internal circumstances that influenced his position and why there are many divergent arguments about his political preferences.
