Item Open Access Accurate plane-wave excitation in the FDTD method(IEEE, 1997) Gürel, Levent; Oğuz, Uğur; Arıkan, OrhanDifferent techniques are developed to implement plane-wave excitation on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, such as the initial-condition, the hard-source, and the connecting-condition techniques, for the total-field/scattered field (TF/SF) formulation. In the TF/SF formulation, the incident field is computed and fed to the 3D FDTD grid on the boundary separating the total-field and the scattered-field regions. Since the incedent field is a known quantity, a closed-form expression can be evaluated on every point of this boundary. A more efficient way of computing the incedent field is by using an incedent-field array (IFA), which is a 1D FDTD grid set-up to numerically propagate the incedent field into the 3D FDTD.Item Open Access Adaptive tracking of narrowband HF channel response(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, 2003) Arikan, F.; Arıkan, OrhanEstimation of channel impulse response constitutes a first step in computation of scattering function, channel equalization, elimination of multipath, and optimum detection and identification of transmitted signals through the HF channel. Due to spatial and temporal variations, HF channel impulse response has to be estimated adaptively. Based on developed state-space and measurement models, an adaptive Kalman filter is proposed to track the HF channel variation in time. Robust methods of initialization and adaptively adjusting the noise covariance in the system dynamics are proposed. In simulated examples under good, moderate and poor ionospheric conditions, it is observed that the adaptive Kalman filter based channel estimator provides reliable channel estimates and can track the variation of the channel in time with high accuracy.Item Open Access Closed-form green's functions of HED, HMD, VED, and VMD for multilayer media(IEEE, 1993-06-07) Aksun, M. İrşadi; Dural, G.The closed-form Green's functions of the vector and scalar potentials in the spatial domain are presented for the sources of horizontal electric, magnetic, and vertical electric, magnetic dipoles embedded in a general, multilayer, planar medium. The spectral domain Green's functions in a arbitrary layer are obtained through the Green's function of the source layer by using a recursive algorithm.Item Open Access Complex source radiation in a cylindrical radome of metal-dielectric grating(IEEE, 1999) Altintas, A.; Ouardani, S.; Yurchenko, V. B.The radiation fields of a line source enclosed in a circular dielectric radorne with grating consisting of an array of thin lossy metal strips are analyzed. The variations of the directivity of the source beam with respect to the beam direction are studied. The possibility of damping these variations by an appropriate design of the radome is demonstrated.Item Open Access Efficient computation of surface fields excited on a dielectric-coated circular cylinder(IEEE, 2000-10) Erturk, V. B.; Rojas, R. G.An efficient method to evaluate the surface fields excited on an electrically large dielectric-coated circular cylinder is presented. The efficiency of the method results from the circumferentially propagating representation of the Green’s function as well as its efficient numerical evaluation along a steepest descent path. The circumferentially propagating series representation of the appropriate Green’s function is obtained from its radially propagating counterpart via Watson’s transformation and then the path of integration is deformed to the steepest descent path on which the integrand decays most rapidly. Numerical results are presented that indicate that the representations obtained here are very efficient and valid even for arbitrary small separations of the source and field points. This work is especially useful in the moment-method analysis of conformal microstrip antennas where the mutual coupling effects are important.Item Open Access Evaluation of the validity of the scalar approximation in optical wave propagation using a systems approach and an accurate digital electromagnetic model(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2016) Kulce, O.; Onural, L.; Özaktaş, Haldun M.The cause and amount of error arising from the use of the scalar approximation in monochromatic optical wave propagation are discussed using a signals and systems formulation. Based on Gauss’s Law, the longitudinal component of an electric field is computed from the transverse components by passing the latter through a two input single output linear shift-invariant system. The system is analytically characterized both in the space and frequency domains. For propagating waves, the large response for the frequencies near the limiting wave number indicates the small angle requirement for the validity of the scalar approximation. Also, a discrete simulator is developed to compute the longitudinal component from the transverse components for monochromatic propagating electric fields. The simulator output helps to evaluate the validity of the scalar approximation when the system output cannot be analytically calculated. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Item Open Access Fast integral equation techniques for propagation problems(IEEE, 2004-09) Babaoğlu, Barış; Tunç, Celal A.; Altıntaş, Ayhan; Ertürk, Vakur B.In this paper, the Method of Moments (MoM) solution is achieved for scattering problems by using the stationary Spectrally Accelerated Forward-Backward method (FBSA) and the non-stationary Spectrally Accelerated BiConjugate Gradient Stabilized (SA-BiCGSTAB) method, with a storage requirement and a computational cost of O(N) per iteration where N is the number of surface unknowns in the discretized integral equation. The SA-BiCGSTAB method is applied over rough terrain profiles as well as re-entrant surfaces which can not be handled by any conventional stationary iterative technique.Item Open Access Highly directional enhanced radiation from sources embedded inside two and three-dimensional photonic crystals(SPIE, 2005) Çağlayan, Hümeyra; Bulu, İrfan; Özbay, EkmelIn this work, we have experimentally and theoretically studied the emission of radiation from a monopole source embedded in a two and three dimensional photonic crystal. We have demonstrated the enhancement of radiation at the band edges and at the cavity modes including coupled cavity modes. We have shown that the emission of radiation from a source depends on the group velocities of the modes and on the electric field intensities of the modes at the source location. Moreover, we have studied the angular distribution of power emitted from a radiation source embedded inside a photonic crystal. Our results show that it is possible to obtain highly directive radiation sources operating at the band edge of the photonic crystal.Item Open Access Hybrid plasmon-phonon polariton bands in graphene-hexagonal boron nitride metamaterials [Invited](Optical Society of America, 2017) Hajian, H.; Ghobadi, A.; Dereshgi, S. A.; Butun, B.; Özbay, EkmelWe theoretically investigate mid-infrared electromagnetic wave propagation in multilayered graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) metamaterials. Hexagonal boron nitride is a natural hyperbolic material that supports highly dispersive phonon polariton modes in two Reststrahlen bands with different types of hyperbolicity. Due to the hybridization of surface plasmon polaritons of graphene and hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hBN, each isolated unit cell of the graphene-hBN metamaterial supports hybrid plasmon-phonon polaritons (HPPs). Through the investigation of band structure of the metamaterial we find that, due to the coupling between the HPPs supported by each unit cell, the graphene-hBN metamaterial can support HPP bands. The dispersion of these bands can be noticeably modified for different thicknesses of hBN layers, leading to the appearance of bands with considerably flat dispersions. Moreover, analysis of light transmission through the metamaterial reveals that this system is capable of supporting high-k propagating HPPs. This characteristic makes graphene-hBN metamaterials very promising candidates for the modification of the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter, hyperlensing, negative refraction, and waveguiding. © 2017 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Interpolation techniques to improve the accuracy of the plane wave excitations in the finite difference time domain method(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc., 1997-11) Oğuz, U.; Gürel, LeventThe importance of matching the phase velocity of the incident plane wave to the numerical phase velocity imposed by the numerical dispersion of the three-dimensional (3-D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) grid is demonstrated. In separate-field formulation of the FDTD method, a plane wave may be introduced to the 3-D computational domain either by evaluating closed-form incident-field expressions or by interpolating from a 1-D incident-field array (IFA), which is a 1-D FDTD grid simulating the propagation of the plane wave. The relative accuracies and efficiencies of these two excitation schemes are compared, and it has been shown that higher-order interpolation techniques can be used to improve the accuracy of the IFA scheme, which is already quite efficient.
