Item Open Access Explaining duration of leadership change in Arab uprisings through perceived political opportunity structures : comparing Egypt and Syria(2016-09) Dinçer, Osman BahadırEgyptian President Mubarak was forced to leave office after turbulent public protests that lasted eighteen days in 2011. Yet, in the Syrian case, we have currently been witnessing a completely different state of affairs. Hence, this comparative work is an attempt at exploring the dynamics of change within the context of domestic politics in two of the most important ‘Arab Spring’ countries, Egypt and Syria. The present research seeks to answer the following question: During the recent uprisings in the Arab world, why has the removal from office of the incumbent leader is less likely in Syria when compared to Egypt? The purpose of this research is two-fold. First, it investigates whether or not the historical trajectories [particularly from early 1970s to 2011] of these two states indicate a substantial difference in terms of being politically open or closed and in having different institutions with different characteristics. Second, it examines to what extent the strategies implemented by the regimes during the uprisings (January 25, 2011- February 11, 2011 [Egypt] and March 2011-2014 [Syria]) influence the claim-making capabilities of those opposition groups and the structure of elite alliances within the society and political scene. This work mainly follows the ‘political process’ (political opportunity structures) and ‘framing’ understandings of recent social movement literature, which describe the available and perceived opportunities and constraints of a political and institutional environment in which actors operate. Apart from the theoretical frameworks, the concept of ‘Social Drama’, envisaged by Victor Turner, has been employed as a convenient template to render the dynamics of the political processes under investigation more comprehensible. The data from large numbers of in-depth interviews with over 60 local informants is supported by an extensive literature review that includes very recent scholarly works in order to achieve more accurate claims. What is aimed at here is understanding this particular region better based on theoretically informed in-depth case studies, complemented by comparisons.Item Restricted Item Open Access Mixing genres to overcome orientalist divisions: lifewriting in ahdaf soueif's the map of love an edward said's after the last sky and out of place(A M S Press, Inc., 2021) Kennedy, ValerieItem Open Access The Ottoman special organization-Teşkilat-ı Mahsusa : a historical assessment with particular reference to its operations against British occupied Egypt (1914-1916)(2006) Safi, PolatThe present level of the knowledge about the plans and operations of the Teşkilat-ı Mahsusa forces against Egypt during World War I is very poor in terms of the analysis of this phenomenon at a micro level in different localities. This study, in this context, is an attempt throught the Teşkilat-ı Mahsusa concentration mourished mainly from Sinai, Libya, and to a lesser extent Sudan, against Egypt between 1914 and 1916 to further our understanding of not only the details of the Teşkilat's activities in these regions but also its administrative and operational characteristics.Item Open Access Portrayal of the palestinian-Israeli conflict: Egyptian, Jordanian, and Lebanese cinema between 2010-2018(2018-04) Nazzal, SedaThis study scrutinizes the documentary portrayal of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict by its neighboring countries Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. Which participated in International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, International Dubai Film Festival, and Doha Tribeca Film Festival from 2010-2018. The research aligns with these three countries as there has been a shared history since 1948, with the establishment of the State of Israel. Along with the Israeli government's denial of the right to return to their homeland, which had conveyed the Palestinians into different parts of the world as refugees. Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon had been the foremost host for the Palestinian refugees since then. Therefore, it is substantial to take a glimpse into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from their point of view through documentaries. This analysis aspires to examine the political structure of the documentaries. Then, furthermore draw a pattern of how its neighboring countries portray the Palestinian experiences and prominent themes of Palestinian documentaries some of which are exile, trauma, struggle, and loss. With the framework that will analyze how the six documentaries that I have picked have a concern to create a political consciousness and encourage a local and global support for the Palestinian cause.Item Open Access Reconstructing the self and the American : Civil War veterans in khedival Egypt(2020-08) Yiğit, Tarık TansuBetween 1869 and 1878, American officers from both sides of the Civil War were recruited into the Egyptian Army. The former foes collaborated in reforming the khedival military by reorganizing the units and professional training, building up defenses, exploring territories down to Equatorial Provinces, and mapping the peripheries. As an earlier example of ex-Confederate-Union amalgamation, the Egyptian experience provided the veterans, whom post-war economic and political conditions in the United States pushed for new quests to restore their professional and economic dignity. This dissertation narrates the story of their sojourn in Egypt, their activities, how they were able to reconcile in a profoundly foreign setting, and the sense of alienation in the host society, which contributed to this (re)constructed national identity.
