Item Open Access Big-data streaming applications scheduling based on staged multi-armed bandits(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2016) Kanoun, K.; Tekin, C.; Atienza, D.; Van Der Schaar, M.Several techniques have been recently proposed to adapt Big-Data streaming applications to existing many core platforms. Among these techniques, online reinforcement learning methods have been proposed that learn how to adapt at run-time the throughput and resources allocated to the various streaming tasks depending on dynamically changing data stream characteristics and the desired applications performance (e.g., accuracy). However, most of state-of-the-art techniques consider only one single stream input in its application model input and assume that the system knows the amount of resources to allocate to each task to achieve a desired performance. To address these limitations, in this paper we propose a new systematic and efficient methodology and associated algorithms for online learning and energy-efficient scheduling of Big-Data streaming applications with multiple streams on many core systems with resource constraints. We formalize the problem of multi-stream scheduling as a staged decision problem in which the performance obtained for various resource allocations is unknown. The proposed scheduling methodology uses a novel class of online adaptive learning techniques which we refer to as staged multi-armed bandits (S-MAB). Our scheduler is able to learn online which processing method to assign to each stream and how to allocate its resources over time in order to maximize the performance on the fly, at run-time, without having access to any offline information. The proposed scheduler, applied on a face detection streaming application and without using any offline information, is able to achieve similar performance compared to an optimal semi-online solution that has full knowledge of the input stream where the differences in throughput, observed quality, resource usage and energy efficiency are less than 1, 0.3, 0.2 and 4 percent respectively.Item Open Access How to teach usage of equipments in a remote laboratory(IEEE, 2007-09) Alparslan, N. Ceren; Özen, M.; Cağiltay, N. E.; Aydın, E.European Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) is an e-learning project for students, teachers and technicians of the universities who will use the very important devices of this laboratory remotely. These devices are very expensive to buy and can be broken easily while they have been using by the people who does not really know how to use them professionally. As a solution we have developed an e-learning system which aims to support the ERRL learners while studying on how to use equipments in the system. The system is developed according to the electronic performance support systems (EPSS) approach. An EPSS is a computer-based, well-structured system which improves the performance of individuals. It is an electronic infrastructure that contains, stores and distributes personal (individual) or corporate knowledge to enable people to reach necessary levels of performance in the fastest possible time and with minimum teaching support of other people. This paper discusses how the content for such a system is developed and how this content is interactively used in the EPSS platform. The technical details of the developed EPSS are also discussed in this study. We believe that this paper will help instructional system designers for designing different alternatives to improve learners' performance. © 2007 IEEE.Item Open Access Online anomaly detection in case of limited feedback with accurate distribution learning(IEEE, 2017) Marivani, Iman; Kari, Dariush; Kurt, Ali Emirhan; Manış, ErenWe propose a high-performance algorithm for sequential anomaly detection. The proposed algorithm sequentially runs over data streams, accurately estimates the nominal distribution using exponential family and then declares an anomaly when the assigned likelihood of the current observation is less than a threshold. We use the estimated nominal distribution to assign a likelihood to the current observation and employ limited feedback from the end user to adjust the threshold. The high performance of our algorithm is due to accurate estimation of the nominal distribution, where we achieve this by preventing anomalous data to corrupt the update process. Our method is generic in the sense that it can operate successfully over a wide range of data distributions. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm with respect to the state-of-the-art over time varying distributions.Item Open Access Reaction level evaluation of distance education programs in branch schools of Turkish Army(2002) Turgut, CemalAdvancements in information and computer technology have radically transformed the education and training. The use of technology in education is increasing rapidly. Technology-assisted education have changed the distance education or e-learning methods in such a way that beyond the limits of imagination, ten years ago. However, usefulness of these technologies should be questioned. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of distance education (especially e-learning) programs in Turkish Army according to the reactions of the coursiers and to determine the answer of the question: Is the distance education system implemented successfully in the army? As the method, we used the reaction level of the Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model that is the most commonly known method to evaluate training. The first question that we should ask trainees is “How do you feel about the distance education?” We measure iv the trainees' feelings and satisfaction with the distance education program by conducting a questionnaire to the coursiers of two courses, which were partially offered via distance education. After making the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis of data we conclude that the implementation of distance education programs have some problems. To overcome these problems we put forth some suggestions about motivation of trainees, study time, content, etc.Item Open Access Teaching usage of equipments in a remote laboratory(Sakarya Universitesi, 2008) Alparslan, N. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak anket kullanılmış ve katılımcılara web tabanlı olarak uygulanmıştır. In this study, the effects of teaching methods to the student achievement levels were investigated in two different student groups chosen from the computer programming department in vocational school in Kırıkkale University and Hitit University. One of them is distance education students, and the other one is formal education students. For the investigation, as a data collection tool, survey was used and it is applied to participants as a web-based. In the first stage, pretest covering CSS and JavaScript were applied on students taking Internet Programming-I course of formal education groups and distance education groups and the resulting data was recorded. Then the issues of CSS and JavaScript were told in both distance education groups and formal education groups and then last test was applied to them . The obtained data was analyzed and which teaching method more effective in the success of the student was found. The demographic structure of distance and traditional education students was examined and their impact on the teaching was identified and assessed. According to results, it has been observed that the rate of increase students' achievement of students studying by distance education method is higher than the rate of students in formal education. Statistically In this context, when the comparison is made according to the type of education, it has been concluded that distance education is a more effective method.
