Item Open Access Effect of Au nano-particles on TiO2 nanorod electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells(Elsevier, 2012-05-26) Ghaffari, M.; Cosar, M. B.; Yavuz, H. I.; Ozenbas, M.; Okyay, Ali KemalAu nano particles (NPs) were deposited on vertically grown TiO2 nanorod arrays on FTO substrate by hydrothermal process. Metal nanoparticles were loaded onto the surface of TiO2 nanorods via photochemical reduction process under ultraviolet irradiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were used to characterize the as-prepared Au/TiO2 nanorod composites. Current density-voltage (I-V) measurements were obtained from a two-electrode sandwich type cell. The presence of Au nanoparticles can help the electron-hole separation by attracting photoelectrons. Addition of Au nanoparticles to the TiO2 nanorod significantly increased the fill factor and J(SC) (short circuit current density). The application of Au NPs TiO2 nanorods in improving the performance of DSSCs is promising.Item Open Access Enhanced performance of dye-sensitized solar cells by omnidirectional antireflective coatings(S P I E - International Society for Optical Engineering, 2015) Ulusoy, T. G.; Daglar, B.; Yildirim, A.; Ghobadi, A.; Bayındır, Mehmet; Okyay, Ali KemalOrganically modified silica (ORMOSIL)-coated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with improved energy conversion efficiency are demonstrated. ORMOSIL-coated DSSC surfaces exhibit omnidirectional low reflectivity over a broad range of wavelengths (400-800 nm). The short-circuit current density (JSC) is enhanced up to 23% at normal incidence (θ=0 deg) as a result of ORMOSIL coating. In addition, JSC enhancement is even higher at larger angles of incidence; 84% enhancement was observed at θ=30 deg. Moreover, ORMOSIL coating is superhydrophobic with a contact angle of 155 deg. © The Authors. Published by SPIE under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. K. K.; Sun, X. W.; Zhao, J. L.; Wang, J. X.; Zhao, D. W.; Wei, X. F.; Liu, X. W.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Wu, T.We report on top-illuminated, fluorine tin oxide/indium tin oxide-free (FTO/ITO-free), dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using room-temperature- processed ZnO layers on metal substrates as the working electrodes and Pt-coated Ga-doped ZnO layers (GZO) as the counter electrodes. These top-illuminated DSCs with GZO render comparable efficiency to those employing commercial FTO counter electrodes. Despite a lower current density, the top-illuminated DSCs result in a higher fill factor than conventional DSCs due to a low ohmic loss at the electrode/semiconductor interface. The effect of metal substrate on the performance of the resulting top-illuminated DSCs is also studied by employing various metals with different work functions. Ti is shown to be a suitable metal to be used as the working electrode in the top-illuminated device architecture owing to its low ohmic loss at the electrode/semiconductor interface, minimum catalytic activity on redox reactions and high resistance to corrosion by liquid electrolytes.
