    Common ground for positioning: a discourse analysis on second language socialization

    Applying Kecskes and Zhang's (2009) dynamic model of common ground in positioning theory (Davies & Harre, 1990), the present study aims to explore the second language (L2) socialization of Turkish students through the discursive processes as well as the skills they adopted in social interactions with the American speakers during a formal reception at an American university. The findings indicated that the Turkish students endorsed similar discursive processes not only to establish common ground as the American speakers', but also to position themselves in the speech context. This study highlights that engaging in real-life conversations with the target language speakers (Gumperz, 1996) encourages L2 learners/users (Cook, 1999) to embrace the discursive practices that are shared within a particular speech community. It also provides suggestions for future research embracing more longitudinal/ethnographic approahes to examine L2 socialization as well as teaching implications for instructional materials and contexts that reflect authentic social encounters.

    Mapping theory: production of knowledge in theory of architecture in Turkey

    The study presents a ‘mapping’ of the production of knowledge in the field of theory of architecture in Turkey in the last two decades. The study is based on 307 dissertations produced in Turkey between 1995-2015. Through text mining and unstructured data analysis methods, the research suggests a taxonomy of research in the field. Conceptualizing its method as ‘cartography of knowledge’ the study aims to document the current state of PhD. research in theory of architecture in Turkish context and provide insights about research trajectories in the field.

    Subjectivizing children: melancholy in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Peter and Wendy

    This thesis is concerned with the subjectivation of children in children’s literature and film, and the melancholy caused to child characters as they are forced down a path of growing up as conceived by adults. Engaged in a close reading of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Peter and Wendy (1911), as well as their select film adaptations Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Return to Never Land (2002), Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010), and finally Peter Pan and Wendy (2023), the thesis is also committed to a discourse analysis of the concepts of childhood and growing up. As the thesis is concerned with works occupying a timeframe of over a century, the shifts in Western children’s literature and film, as well as their introduction into the Disney machinery is also considered. Approaching this multitude of attitudes towards how child characters relate to adulthood and growing up, the thesis connects this issue in relation to the dynamic between the Western colonizer and the colonized subjects, as the former desubjectivizes the latter in a similar dynamic to the one between adults and children.

    Text mining analysis of translation, social communication and literary writing for Turkish

    Text mining is an important research area considering the increase in text generation and the need for analysis. Text mining in Turkish is still not a wellinvested research area, compared to the other languages. In this thesis, we analyze different types of Turkish text from different points of views, having an overall review on text mining in Turkish at the end. First, we analyze the translation quality of a Turkish novel, My Names is Red novel, to English, French, and Spanish with the features generated for each chapter. With the proposed method, translation loyalties to the original text can be quantified without any parallel comparisons. Then, we analyze the Turkish spoken texts of 98 people in different age groups in terms of gender and age attributes of the speakers. We also analyze the difference between written and spoken texts in Turkish. Results show that it is possible to predict the attributes of the speaker from the spoken text and written and spoken texts are significantly different in terms of stylometric measures. Later on, we make an assessment on cross-lingual transferring performances of multilingual networks from English to Turkish. We see that transferring is possible; however zero-shot cross-lingual transferring still has its way to be competitive with monolingual networks for Turkish. Lastly, we conduct a time-based stylometric analysis of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s works. We see that Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar shows some differences compared to his contemporaries.
