Item Open Access Characterization of niobium-zirconium mixed oxide as a novel catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NO x(2009) Cayirtepe, I.; Naydenov, A.; Ivanov, G.; Kantcheva, M.The performance of mixed niobium-zirconium oxide in the SCR of NO x with propene in excess oxygen has been studied. The mixed oxide is prepared by impregnation of hydrated zirconia with acidic solution (pH 0.5) of peroxoniobium(V) complex, [Nb2(O2)3] 4+, ensuring ZrO2:Nb2O5 mole ratio of 6:1. The calcined sample (denoted as 25NbZ-P) has the structure of Zr 6Nb2O17. According to the catalytic test, the conversion of NO x over the 25NbZ-P catalyst passes through a maximum at 220 °C. Based on the in situ FT-IR results, a reaction mechanism is proposed with nitroacetone and NCO species as the key reaction intermediates. The results of the investigation show that the catalytic properties of the Zr6Nb2O17 solid solution could be of interest regarding the development of low-temperature catalyst for the SCR of NO x with hydrocarbons. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.Item Open Access Compact wavelength de-multiplexer design using slow light regime of photonic crystal waveguides(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2011) Akosman, A.E.; Mutlu, M.; Kurt H.; Özbay, EkmelWe demonstrate the operation of a compact wavelength demultiplexer using cascaded single-mode photonic crystal waveguides utilizing the slow light regime. By altering the dielectric filling factors of each waveguide segment, we numerically and experimentally show that different frequencies are separated at different locations along the waveguide. In other words, the beams of different wavelengths are spatially dropped along the transverse to the propagation direction. We numerically verified the spatial shifts of certain wavelengths by using the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. The presented design can be extended to de-multiplex more wavelengths by concatenating additional photonic crystal waveguides with different filling factors. © 2011 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Effect of milling time on the structure, micro-hardness, and thermal behavior of amorphous/nanocrystalline TiNiCu shape memory alloys developed by mechanical alloying(Elsevier Ltd, 2014) Alijani F.; Amini, R.; Ghaffari, M.; Alizadeh, M.; Okyay, Ali KemalIn the present paper, the effect of milling process on the chemical composition, structure, microhardness, and thermal behavior of Ti-41Ni-9Cu compounds developed by mechanical alloying was evaluated. The structural characteristic of the alloyed powders was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The chemical composition homogeneity and the powder morphology and size were studied by scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover, the Vickers micro-indentation hardness of the powders milled for different milling times was determined. Finally, the thermal behavior of the as-milled powders was studied by differential scanning calorimetery. According to the results, at the initial stages of milling (typically 0-12. h), the structure consisted of a Ni solid solution and amorphous phase, and by the milling evolution, nanocrystalline martensite (B19') and austenite (B2) phases were initially formed from the initial materials and then from the amorphous phase. It was found that by the milling development, the composition uniformity is increased, the inter-layer thickness is reduced, and the powders microhardness is initially increased, then reduced, and afterward re-increased. It was also realized that the thermal behavior of the alloyed powders and the structure of heat treated samples is considerably affected by the milling time.Item Open Access Effects of ions on the liquid crystalline mesophase of transition-metal salt: surfactant (CnEOm)(American Chemical Society, 2004) Dag, Ö.; Alayoǧlu, S.; Uysal, İ.The transition-metal aqua complex salts [M(H2O) x]Y2 (where M is some of the first- and second-row transitionmetal ions and Y is Cl-, NO3-, and ClO4- counteranions) form liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases with oligo(ethylene oxide) nonionic surfactants (CnH 2n+1(CH2CH2O)mOH, denoted as C nEOm). The structure of the [M(H2O) x]Y2:CnEOm mesophase is usually 2D hexagonal in nitrate systems, cubic in perchlorate systems, and absent in the chloride systems. The solubility of the metal aqua complex salt follows the Hofmeister series in a [M(H2O)x]Y2:C nEOm mesophase. However, the nitrate ion interacts with the metal center as a bidentate and/or unidentate ligand, therefore reducing the ion density (and/or ionic strength) of the LC medium and further enhancing the solubility of nitrate salt in the LC systems. The cobalt chloride salt is the only soluble chloride salt that undergoes ligand-exchange reactions in the [Co(H2O)6]Cl2:CnEOm system. In an LC mesophase, anions have a greater influence on the hydrophilicity of nonionic surfactants than do cations. The structure and stability of the LC mesophase can be controlled by controlling either the hydrophilicity of the nonionic surfactant (by choosing the right anion type) or the ion density of the medium (by either influencing the equilibrium between the free and coordinated anions or balancing between the coordinating and noncoordinating anions in the medium).Item Open Access Femtosecond laser crystallization of amorphous Ge(American Institute of Physics, 2011) Salihoglu, O.; Kürüm, U.; Yaglıoglu, G. H.; Elmali, A.; Aydınlı, AtillaUltrafast crystallization of amorphous germanium (a-Ge) in ambient has been studied. Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition grown a-Ge was irradiated with single femtosecond laser pulses of various durations with a range of fluences from below melting to above ablation threshold. Extensive use of Raman scattering has been employed to determine post solidification features aided by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy measurements. Linewidth of the Ge optic phonon at 300 cm -1 as a function of laser fluence provides a signature for the crystallization of a-Ge. Various crystallization regimes including nanostructures in the form of nanospheres have been identified.Item Open Access Growth mechanism of 2D Mo2C on Cu via CVD(American Chemical Society, 2023-7-7) Büke, G. C.; Caylan, Ömer Refet; Oğurtanı, Ö. T.This study investigates the growth of Mo2C crystals via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in the presence of a carbon (H2/CH4 gas)-containing environment. The study employs both theoretical and experimental approaches to investigate the vertical and lateral (in-plane) growth of Mo2C crystals. A physico-mathematical consideration is applied to develop an analytical forward model, which incorporates bulk diffusivities, surface diffusivities, and solubility gradients for Mo2C crystal growth. Coupled nonlinear flow equations have been advanced for the Mo-, Cu-, Mo2C layer framework and effectively predicted the Mo2C crystal growth rate for both vertical and lateral directions. Forming the Mo2C crystal height and diameter was directly correlated with copper layer thickness and time using the forward model and then validated by the experiments together with SEM and AFM studies. Studies showed that the Cu layer thickness plays a crucial role in controlling the height of the Mo2C crystal while it is not that critical in changing the lateral dimension of the crystal. Beyond simply enhancing Mo2C crystal growth and property-processing relationship, this study demonstrated the synthesis of designer Mo2C, which can be tailored to the needs of specific applications. This forward model will enable us to further enhance and exploit the family of analogs of materials previously demonstrated by other methods.Item Open Access Interlocking shish-kebab morphology in polybutene-1(John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2002) Kalay, G.; Kalay, C. R.The aim of this research was to explore the effect of shear-controlled orientation injection molding (SCORIM) on polybutene-1 (PB-1). This article describes the methods and processing conditions used for injection molding and discusses the properties of the moldings. Both conventional and SCORIM have been used for the production of moldings. SCORIM is based on the application of specific macroscopic shears to a solidifying melt that facilitates enhanced molecular alignment. The effect of the process was investigated by performing mechanical tests, X-ray studies, differential scanning calorimetric studies, polarized light microscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moldings exhibited an improved mechanical performance as compared with conventional moldings. Young's modulus was increased over twofold, and the impact energy was enhanced by 60%. The improvement in mechanical performance was combined with an increase in crystallinity and enhanced molecular orientation. The application of SCORIM also favored the formation of the stable Form I' in PB-1. The formation of interlocking shish-kebab morphology following the application of SCORIM was observed in the AFM studies. Relationships between the mechanical properties of PB-1 and the micromorphologies formed during processing are demonstrated.Item Open Access A new lyotropic liquid crystalline system: oligo(ethylene oxide) surfactants with [M(H2O)n]Xm transition metal complexes(Wiley, 2001) Çelik, Ö.; Dag, Ö.Coordinated water molecules induce the aggregation and self-assembly of the lyotropic liquid crystalline phase formed from non-ionic surfactants CnH2n+1(CH2CH2O)mOH and transition metal aqua complexes ([Ni(H2O)6](NO3)2, [Co(H2O)6](NO3)2, [Cd(H2O)4](NO3)2, and [Co(H2O)6]Cl2) into hexagonal (see schematic representation) and/or cubic structures. While the NiII and CoII complexes undergo recrystallization and phase separation at high complex concentrations, the ZnII and CdII complexes form cubic phases above metal/surfactant molar ratios of 3.2/1 at room temperature.Item Open Access Possibility of superconductivity of two-dimensional electrons on the surface of liquid heliuM, films(Pergamon Press, 1993) Tanatar, Bilal; Hakioǧlu T.We consider the possibility of superconductivity in a system of two-dimensional electrons on the surface of liquid helium films. Taking into account of the interaction between electrons and the surface excitations of liquid helium films-ripplons, within the weak coupling BCS theory, we estimate the superconducting transition temperature for various interaction strengths, film thicknesses, and electron densities. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, under experimentally realizable conditions, is calculated to be a few mK's. © 1993.Item Open Access Spin-dependent analysis of two-dimensional electron liquids(The American Physical Society, 2002) Bulutay, C.; Tanatar, BilalTwo-dimensional electron liquid (2D EL) at full Fermi degeneracy is revisited, giving special attention to the spin-polarization effects. First, we extend the recently proposed classical-map hypernetted-chain (CHNC) technique to the 2D EL, while preserving the simplicity of the original proposal. An efficient implementation of CHNC is given utilizing Lado's quadrature expressions for the isotropic Fourier transforms. Our results indicate that the paramagnetic phase stays to be the ground state until the Wigner crystallization density, even though the energy separation with the ferromagnetic and other partially polarized states become minute. We analyze compressibility and spin stiffness variations with respect to density and spin polarization, the latter being overlooked until now. Spin-dependent static structure factor and pair-distribution functions are computed; agreement with the available quantum Monte Carlo data persists even in the strong-coupling regime of the 2D EL.Item Open Access Surface-modified bacterial nanofibrillar PHB scaffolds for bladder tissue repair(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2016) Karahaliloǧlu, Z.; Demirbilek, M.; Şam, M.; Saǧlam, N.; Mizrak, A. K.; Denkbaş, E. B.The aim of the study is in vitro investigation of the feasibility of surface-modified bacterial nanofibrous poly [(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) graft for bladder reconstruction. In this study, the surface of electrospun bacterial PHB was modified with PEG- or EDA via radio frequency glow discharge method. After plasma modification, contact angle of EDA-modified PHB scaffolds decreased from 110 1.50 to 23 0.5 degree. Interestingly, less calcium oxalate stone deposition was observed on modified PHB scaffolds compared to that of non-modified group. Results of this study show that surface-modified scaffolds not only inhibited calcium oxalate growth but also enhanced the uroepithelial cell viability and proliferation.Item Open Access Unidirectional transmission in photonic-crystal gratings at beam-type illumination(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2010) Cakmak, A.O.; Colak, E.; Serebryannikov, A.E.; Özbay, EkmelUnidirectional transmission is studied theoretically and experimentally for the gratings with one-side corrugations (non-symmetric gratings), which are based on two-dimensional photonic crystals composed of alumina rods. The unidirectional transmission appears at a fixed angle of incidence as a combined effect of the peculiar dispersion features of the photonic crystal and the properly designed corrugations. It is shown that the basic unidirectional transmission characteristics, which are observed at a plane-wave illumination, are preserved at Gaussian-beam and horn antenna illuminations. The main attention is paid to the single-beam unidirectional regime, which is associated with the strong directional selectivity arising due to the first negative diffraction order. An additional degree of freedom for controlling the transmission of the electromagnetic waves is obtained by making use of the asymmetric corrugations at the photonic crystal interface. © 2010 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Visible photoluminescence from low temperature deposited hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride(Pergamon Press, 1996) Aydınlı, A.; Serpengüzel, A.; Vardar, D.Hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx:H) samples have been prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using a mixture of silane (SiH4), nitrogen and ammonia (NH3). Most films exhibit visible photoluminescence (PL) and some emit strong PL after annealing. While films grown without NH3 exhibit PL in the deep red, those grown with NH3 show PL in the green. The PL properties of these films with no oxygen (O) content are similar to those of silicon oxide (SiOx) films and porous Si. Using infrared and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, we suggest that PL from a-SiNx:H films originate from Si clusters which form during PECVD and crystallize upon annealing. We propose that the presence of O is not necessary for efficient PL.
