Item Open Access Bean-Livingston surface barriers for flux penetration in Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+δ single crystals near the transition temperature(2011) Mihalache V.; Dede, M.; Oral, A.; Miu L.The first field for magnetic flux penetration H p in Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+δ (Bi-2212) single crystals near the critical temperature T c was investigated from the local magnetic hysteresis loops registered for different magnetic field H sweeping rates by using a scanning Hall probe microscope (SHPM) with ∼1 μm effective spatial resolution. Evidences for a significant role of the surface barrier were obtained: the asymmetric shape of the magnetization loops and an anomalous change in the slope of H p(T) close to T c. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Ö.Artificial magnetic fields (AMFs) created for ultracold systems depend sensitively on the internal structure of the atoms. In a mixture, each component experiences a different AMF depending on its internal state. This enables the study of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing of fermions with unequal effective charges. In this Letter, we investigate the superconducting (SC) transition of a system formed by such pairs as a function of field strength. We consider a homogeneous two-component Fermi gas of unequal effective charges but equal densities with attractive interactions. We find that the phase diagram is altered drastically compared to the usual balanced charge case. First, for some AMFs there is no SC transition and isolated SC phases are formed, reflecting the discrete Landau level (LL) structure. SC phases become reentrant both in AMF and temperature. For extremely high fields where both components are confined to their lowest LLs, the effect of the charge imbalance is suppressed. Charge asymmetry reduces the critical temperature even in the low-field semiclassical regime. We discuss a pair breaking mechanism due to the unequal Lorentz forces acting on the components of the Cooper pairs to identify the underlying physics.Item Open Access Unconventional pairing in excitonic condensates under Spin-orbit coupling(The American Physical Society, 2009) Can, M. A.; Hakioǧlu T.It is shown that Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings enhance the conclusive power in the experiments on the excitonic condensate by at least three low temperature effects. First, spin-orbit coupling facilitates the photoluminescence measurements via enhancing the bright contribution in the otherwise dominantly dark ground state. The second is the presence of a low temperature power law dependence of the specific heat and weakening of the second order transition at the critical temperature. The third is the appearance of the nondiagonal elements in the static spin susceptibility.
