Item Open Access Inheriting war in Thucydides(Classical Association of the Middle West and South, 2021) Bruzzone, RachelThis article argues that Thucydides represents the story of the Eurypontid Spartan kings, Archidamus and Agis, as a coherent, meaningful narrative spanning his text. Early on, Archidamus worries that his generation might leave war to their children as a kind of inheritance. His son Agis then does inherit the war, more literally than any other figure. The consequences of this malign bequest become clear as Agis comes to violate the traditional value system represented by his father. Formal naming of both men throughout their stories encourages the reader to view their appearances not as a series of isolated events but as a single narrative depicting the corruption of their family.Item Open Access Moral development(Elsevier, 2012) Berges, Sandrine; Chadwick, R.This article introduces the concepts of moral development, developmental psychology, and character development. It begins by providing an overview of the history of these concepts, focusing on ancient philosophy and the philosophy of the Enlightenment. It then discusses in more detail a leading theory of moral development and objections that have been made against it. It concludes with some suggestions regarding how we might expect theories of moral development to evolve from those objections.Item Open Access Personality, character, and self-expression: the YMCA and the construction of manhood and class, 1877-1920(Sage Publications, Inc., 2000) Winter, T.Historians have largely neglected to explore the ways in which emerging constructions of middle-class manhood were contingent on defining and structuring class difference. Using the YMCA's efforts with railroad and industrial workers from the 1870s to the end of World War I as a case study, the author argues that definitions of class difference were an integral part to new articulations of middle-class manhood. YMCA officials hoped that workingmen would abstain from political radicalism and industrial unrest once they adopted an ideal of Christian manhood. Bringing an ideal of Christian manhood to the workers, the YMCA presumed, could engender a workforce that would set examples of sacrifice and service and exude goodwill and selflessness. While YMCA officials took part in the remaking of middle-class men's notions about the meaning of manhood, they also constructed and affirmed class differences through their cultural practices.Item Open Access The conditionality of Helenus' Oracle and tragic choice in Sophocles' Philoctetes(Brill, 2024-10-02) McPhee, Brian DavidHelenus' oracle in Sophocles' Philoctetes is commonly misunderstood as an unqualified revelation of an immutable future: the gods have fated Philoctetes to rejoin the Greek army at Troy. This has occasioned further misinterpretations of the play, especially as regards the "false ending", in which Neoptolemus and Philoctetes would appear to disregard the divine will in an act of conscious impiety by choosing to sail for Malis instead. This paper argues that the oracle should rather be understood as conditional, allowing Philoctetes either to assent or refuse to rejoin the Greek army in good conscience. In the absence of compulsion from the gods, Neoptolemus and Philoctetes feel free to make tragic choices of real gravity about their futures, and these choices reveal the duo's characters before Heracles appears and reverses their course.Item Restricted Yeşilçam'ın efsane ismi: Nuri Alço(Bilkent University, 2025) Akkan, Arda Yiğit; Yoldaş, Deniz Can; Akgüloğlu, Elif; Kaya, Eda; Aykın, İnciNuri Alço, 1951 yılında Eskişehir'de doğmuştur.
