Item Open Access Comedian podcasters changing the comedy scene through the podcast medium(2021-12) Yardımcı, KemalThe particular aim of the current thesis is to shed light on the liberating nature of podcasts as an innovative medium, and its effect on the comedy scene. Ultimately, it is suggested that podcasting is an emerging form of new media that shape the comedy scene, through exemplifying the impact of comedian podcasters on the new and niche audiences. In this thesis, the social and technological impacts of comedian podcasts will be studied by examining the emerging relationship between podcasts and other forms of new media through literature review and case study. The particular focus of the paper is examined in relation to the career of Joe Rogan, the host of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Through this examination, it is discussed how new generation comedian podcasters are challenging the conventional understanding of corporate-managed media with independent, self-produced and accessible broadcasts. It is further argued that the authenticity and the wide array of topics offered by these podcasters allow for a greater impact that major networks usually fail to obtain, arguably due to their artificial outlook, and lack of inclusiveness in terms of opinions and people.Item Open Access The concept of authenticity in the protection of industrial heritage : the case of Samsun Tobacco Factory Building(2014) Kurt, MerveThe gradual changes in almost all aspects of life brought about by the industrial developments left their spatial and social traces. These sometimes revolutionary variations have inscribed their identity in entire cities. The protection of these traces lies behind the protective thought and activities for cultural heritages. Industrial heritage, as one of the important constituents of the cultural heritage, has become a central issue for the world heritage protection activities. Within a historical perspective, through the late 18th and 19th centuries’ Industrial Revolution, all production processes and methods have seen radical changes and the new industrial technology affected the factories and manufacturing sites. These changes, however, were not confined to these past centuries. The rapid advancements in industry continued to force adjustments of these industrial sites or brought their abandonments. Today, there are many studies, groups, conferences, thus a powerful discourse upon the protection and re-evaluation of industrial heritage. In the protection and re-evaluation process, “authenticity” appears as an important concept. With this in mind, this study investigates the importance of authenticity within the concept of collective memory and analyses its status in the process of the industrial heritage protection in architecture. Through the case study of Samsun Tobacco Factory (1886), which was turned into a shopping mall in 2012, these arguments are developed and the analysis is made. This study aims to put a special emphasis on such sites as a value for the socio-cultural dynamics and historical sustainability of the urban life and bring a criticism upon their commercialized re-evaluation and reuse that may create incompatibilities with the spatial/architectural authenticity and with the collective memory of a city.Item Open Access Consumption of counterfeit designer brands : reasons, practices and consequences(2005) Akkoç, Ali UtkuThis thesis examines the consumption reasons, practices and consequences of nondeceptive counterfeit designer brand clothing, which has been becoming rampant in Turkey as stressed by diverse resources. Utilizing qualitative research methods, the study was conducted through interviewing twenty counterfeit designer brand consumers nine of which additionally possessed the authentic items. Three consumers who solely consume the authentic items were also included in the sample. Findings suggest that consumers prefer counterfeit designer brand clothing not only for economic reasons, but also for symbolic reasons such as ardent desire, reference group influence, experiential fulfillment, nostalgic appeal as well as perceivably unfair prices of authentic items. Consumers selectively display the counterfeit items in different public domains and selectively disclose information about their consumption to avoid social anxiety and embarrassment. As a consequence, consumers authenticate an otherwise strange identity through such consumption practices. It is not only fantasy and real that commingle, but also fake and authentic, which mesh through a process of authentication as determined by the desires of the consumer. The study has implications for the literature on counterfeit consumption, price fairness, symbolic consumption as well as postmodernism and concludes with a discussion of limitations and opportunities future research.Item Open Access Developing insights into the link between art and tourism through the value co-creation lens(Emerald, 2020) Gökbulut-Özdemir, Ö.; Fillis, I.; Baş-Collins, AyşePurpose – The aim of the study is to gain insight into the link between art and tourism from a value co-creation perspective. This link is discussed with the help of the arts marketing, art tourism and value co-creation literature. The role of art in tourism and the role of cultural places in arts marketing are also evaluated. Design/methodology/approach – Focussing on two cultural heritage sites in Turkey, Zeugma and Göbeklitepe, a qualitative study was undertaken in order to determine the value creation and co-creation processes occurring from the art–tourism contexts based on comparative case study analysis. In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with three groups of actors. Motivation, expectation and stakeholder experiences were the main themes explored. Findings – The findings of the study relate to the role of the co-creation process. Marketing art in alternative places creates value in closing the gap between art and society through the use of related fields such as culture and heritage. In terms of cultural value, the paper identifies the reconnection with cultural heritage through contemporary art. This is a way of looking at culture and its concepts in different time and place dimensions which make visitors more engaged with culture and its contemporary reflection through art. Research limitations/implications – Although the research focusses on two Turkish art and tourism cases, future research can be extended to other countries, including the assessment of the longer-term role of similar activities. Practical implications – As art is a subset of culture, the people who are interested in culture and history also have the potential to be interested in art. While art impacts on cultural tourism, cultural heritage and tourism work as arts marketing tools in a co-supporting way. The coming together of art and culture has societal benefits. There are lessons for practice such as the opening of a space for contemporary art in cultural heritage museums in order to promote art to society. The museum audience is an important potential for the future of art from a market generation perspective. Originality/value – The study contribute to arts tourism, arts marketing and value co-creation in theory and practice.Item Open Access Situating islamic existentialism in Turkey: key existentialist concepts in Sezai Karakoç’s works(2022-09) Çitler, GözdeThe purpose of this dissertation is to put forward an analytical account that Sezai Karakoç, a conservative Muslim intellectual, author, and one of the founders of the Second New movement in Turkish poetry, created a sui generis characterisation of what this study calls Islamic existentialism in Turkey. An important literary figure of the 20th century, Karakoç utilises the existentialist concepts of death, freedom, authenticity, and isolation while following the Islamic and Sufistic doctrines since he preoccupied himself with the same philosophical questions existentialism asks and attempted to find their answers from a different angle and source, that was Islam. In this study, it is argued that Karakoc professes Islamic existentialism, primarily by stating that it is imperative to (i) overcome the anguish and despair of this life by accepting the reality of death and being willing to move past it to be reunited with Allah as the only Creator; (ii) pursue an authentic life by being a true believer, (iii) achieve the ultimate freedom-seeking for the divine love and by abiding by Islamic principles and rules heralded by the prophets, and (iv) transform the individual’s alienation by attempting to become a soldier of resurrection within Karakoç’s doctrine of the resurrection. While this study does not argue that Karakoç is an existentialist, it does argue that existentialism and its core concepts are resonated in his worldview and thoughts on what a true individual is, how to live an authentic and honest life, how to create the ultimate, Islamic, civilisation, and eventually how to unite with God as a sincere believer. This dissertation aims to contribute to the literature by conceptualising Karakoç’s doctrine of resurrection, encompassing the four concepts of existentialism and the teachings of Islam, which permeated his poems, essays, and worldview as such.Item Restricted Untangling the threads of authenticity: Turkish carpets and its transformation as a result of westernization(Bilkent University, 2023) Shaikh, Badar Khalid; Zaka, Hamna; Khan, Huda; Asim Ibad, Syed Muhammad; Sarfraz, Zainab1920'lerden itibaren Türk halıları, coğrafi sınırları aşan estetik çekiciliğiyle Batılı uygarlıkları büyüledi.
