Item Open Access Discrimination against teenagers in the mall environment: a case from Ankara, Turkey(Libra Publishers, 2009-02) Mugan, G.; Erkip, F.Teenagers spend much of their leisure time at shopping malls which is a result of factors such as parental constraint due to the incivility of the streets, financial dependence, and limited financial resources. Migros, a shopping mall in Ankara was chosen as the sit for this research wiht the main purpose of studying discrimination patterns against teenagers in the mall environment. The research was carried out through observation and in-depth interviews with 104 teenagers. Results indicate that, although they have some complaints, most of the teenagers do not perceive discrimination in the mall, unlike their foreign counterparts.Item Open Access High school biology teachers and bioethics: awareness, attitudes and teaching practices(2021-01) Deniz, ÖzgeNowadays, with the advancement of technology, biotechnology and genetic engineering applications have gained momentum, especially in the field of medicine, very important developments have been made. However, the risks and ethical aspects of these practices cause conflict among scientists. These applications within the scope of bioethics are taught within the high school MoNE curriculum and the IBDP curriculum. Disagreements between scientists are likely to manifest themselves in biology classes. This study investigates the bioethics awareness of high school biology teachers, their attitudes towards bioethics and teaching these subjects, and their instructional strategies. Thus, the research aims to contribute to bioethics education. In this study, the mixed method in which qualitative and quantitative research approaches are applied together was used. The data of the study were analysed by descriptive statistics and content analysis methods. Analysis results determined that teachers have bioethical awareness, have a positive attitude towards bioethics, and make use of various teaching strategies that they think are effective for teaching.Item Open Access High school students’ level of knowledge and attitudes towards the use of technology in biology classrooms(2021-01) Yalım, EcemThrough the rapid development of technology of our age more technology tools are used in the field of education. In education, the use of technology and its tools affects students’ attitudes towards lessons. Therefore, technology and its tools have been used in the education field to provide opportunities for students to have better educational environments and to improve their learning. This study aims to investigate high school students’ (N= 612, 58% female and 42% male students) level of knowledge and attitudes towards the use of technology in biology classrooms. In this quantitative study, a questionnaire was used to collect data from four different high school in Ankara province. As a result of this study, the most used technology tools in biology classrooms are video, animation and interactive white board. In terms of gender difference, it was concluded that male students’ knowledge level of technology and its tools used in biology classrooms are higher than female students. However, it was explored that female students’ attitudes are more positive than male students' attitudes in biology classrooms. Finally, there is a weak correlation between students’ technology knowledge and the program that they follow in schools. On the other hand, there is no relationship between students’ attitudes towards technology and the program that they follow. Considering the results, the present study suggests that the technology and its tools used in high school biology classrooms will be useful in informing teachers and educational program developers about students’ level of technology knowledge and attitudes towards technology.Item Open Access How dysfunctional are the dysfunctional attitudes in another culture?(1992) Şahin, N. H.; Şahin, N.The Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS-A) has been used in many studies to measure depressogenic attitudes, vulnerability to depression and to assess the effectiveness of cognitive therapy. Despite its frequent use in research, no data have yet been reported on its item validity. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the item validity and psychometric properties of the DAS-A in the Turkish cultural context. The subjects were 345 university students. The locally adapted versions of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire were also administered. The reliability coefficients and the factor structure of the DAS-A were found to be similar to those reported in the West. However, the total mean was found to be unusually, high. The reason for this elevated mean score was as found to reside in the response patterns of the subjects to the reverse items. None of these 10 reverse items discriminated the dysphoric and non-dysphoric groups. A closer examination revealed these 10 items to reflect autonomous attitudes. It seems that these 10 reverse items do nothing but distort the mean scores and render cross-cultural comparisons difficult. Recent research on depression shows that, while autonomy may or may not be related to depression, sociotropy has consistent association with it. Researchers in other cultures and those working with minority and immigrant groups are warned against this bias inherent in the DAS-A.Item Open Access Inclusive design: developing students' knowledge and attitude through empathic modelling(Routledge, 2014-06-26) Altay, Burçak; Demirkan, HalimeTo enhance the function and quality of built environments, designers should consider all possible users in their design projects. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate inclusive design in the education of the design student. This study focuses on the educational objectives of and related learning activities in a course where inclusive design is one of the main subjects. Through empathic modelling, students' engagement with the course was enhanced. Within the course, students simulated disabled users while they experienced the campus environment using wheelchairs, crutches or blindfolds. Their experiences were reflected through descriptive texts and poster designs. Descriptive texts were analysed through developing themes and codes whereas posters were analysed through a content analysis method. Our findings showed that students developed their knowledge of inclusive design concerning the physical environment, the self and the social environment. They also developed immediate emotional responses and a positive attitude towards diversity and inclusion. Thus, empathic modelling supported the development of cognitive and affective learning domains of the novice designer, supporting inclusive design education.Item Open Access A large-scale sentiment analysis for Yahoo! Answers(ACM, 2012) Küçüktunç, O.; Cambazoğlu, B. B.; Weber, I.; Ferhatosmanoğlu, HakanSentiment extraction from online web documents has recently been an active research topic due to its potential use in commercial applications. By sentiment analysis, we refer to the problem of assigning a quantitative positive/negative mood to a short bit of text. Most studies in this area are limited to the identification of sentiments and do not investigate the interplay between sentiments and other factors. In this work, we use a sentiment extraction tool to investigate the influence of factors such as gender, age, education level, the topic at hand, or even the time of the day on sentiments in the context of a large online question answering site. We start our analysis by looking at direct correlations, e.g., we observe more positive sentiments on weekends, very neutral ones in the Science & Mathematics topic, a trend for younger people to express stronger sentiments, or people in military bases to ask the most neutral questions. We then extend this basic analysis by investigating how properties of the (asker, answerer) pair affect the sentiment present in the answer. Among other things, we observe a dependence on the pairing of some inferred attributes estimated by a user's ZIP code. We also show that the best answers differ in their sentiments from other answers, e.g., in the Business & Finance topic, best answers tend to have a more neutral sentiment than other answers. Finally, we report results for the task of predicting the attitude that a question will provoke in answers. We believe that understanding factors influencing the mood of users is not only interesting from a sociological point of view, but also has applications in advertising, recommendation, and search. In the current research, we test two prominent hypotheses that have been proposed as explanations for these relationships. The first, which is an intragroup account, holds that these relationships between pathogens and politics are based on motivations to adhere to local norms, which are sometimes shaped by cultural evolution to have pathogenneutralizing properties. The second, which is an intergroup account, holds that these same relationships are based on motivations to avoid contact with outgroups, who might pose greater infectious disease threats than ingroup members. Results from a study surveying 11,501 participants across 30 nations are more consistent with the intragroup account than with the intergroup account. National parasite stress relates to traditionalism (an aspect of conservatism especially related to adherence to group norms) but not to social dominance orientation (SDO; an aspect of conservatism especially related to endorsements of intergroup barriers and negativity toward ethnic and racial outgroups). Further, individual differences in pathogen-avoidance motives (i.e., disgust sensitivity) relate more strongly to traditionalism than to SDO within the 30 nations.Item Open Access The poetic geography(1999) Türkyılmaz, MürüvvetIn this study, Dada and Surrealism movements are analysed and compared with each other in accordance with historical, social, economical and political conditions. Especially, the techniques of Automatic Writing and Automatic Drawing in Surrealism movement are researched and explained the differences of usage in my works. Dada is analysed as an attitude and the relationship between Dada and my works are handled in the frame of his attitude. This attitude accepts art and life together. The influences of the I. World War bring the exploration of Dada. This exploration implies the feeling of isolation or loneliness in the fragmented geography. The similar conditions are seen n this century which people consume in faster span of life and which all borders have been passed on the map. At this point, Dada attitude and the attitude in my works are analysed on the same level.Item Open Access Science Teachers’ beliefs and attitudes towards the use of interactive whiteboards in education(Ekip Ltd. Şti, 2019) Anatürk Tombak, Canan; Ateşkan, ArmağanThis study aimed to explore the beliefs and attitudes of 36 science teachers (biology, physics and chemistry) in six high schools in Ankara towards the use of Interactive White Boards (IWB). Of these, three teachers from each school were chosen for interview and classroom observations according to their questionnaire results with purposeful sampling method. The results were analyzed with descriptive statistics and qualitative data analysis methods. According to the results, teachers agree that using IWBs facilitate reaching different sources and display them to the whole class immediately. Teachers describe the common use of IWBs as showing visual materials, videos and animations in science classes. The majority of teachers enjoy using the IWB technology and express positive feelings about it. Most teachers state that they follow the advances in educational technology regularly. Since the frequencies are approximately equal, no meaningful difference was found between teachers with different majors on staying current with technology. The findings show that biology and chemistry teachers use IWB more frequently than physics teachers. Although the teachers have positive attitudes towards the use of IWBs, it was seen that most of them do not feel comfortable while using them in the classrooms. The interviews indicate the reason for that as insufficient in-service trainings.Item Open Access A Study on the relationships among space, and time concepts, and attitudes of students within a dormitory environment(2001) Ünsalan, NurThe thesis discusses the relationships between space, time and the attitudes of people to time and space. The space concept is defined in relation with time. In order to understand the space concept in a broader sense the spatial elements were introduced. Attitude to time and space is analyzed with the environmental psychology concepts, which are namely attitude that is a manner towards a space; place that is differentiated from the space concept; and place attachment that is initiated with the time spending in a certain space. All these concepts are the major concerns in understanding the human needs and well being of oneself in an environment. Also these concepts change throughout time and affect the spatial understanding. A case study was conducted to analyze the relationships between time space and the students’ attitudes to time and space in dormitory environments at Bilkent University in Turkey. The reason for analyzing the dormitories is that living processes with many different activities take place together in these environments. The analyses consist of students’ evaluations of their rooms, their attitudes to their rooms, and the distribution of the activity patterns, and time spending in their rooms. The results of the research are expected to inform the designers about the importance of understanding the time and the attitudes of people to time and space in designing environments.
