Item Open Access Building empathy in interior architecture education: exploring empathic design and its reflections(2023-03) Yeşiltepe, MelisIntegrating empathy to design education enhances students' universal design solutions since empathic design provides a feeling and understanding of a wide range of users' needs in the designed environment or products. This study investigates how using empathic design techniques as instructional design methods influence students’ improvement in the multiple dimensions of empathy, design process and end products, and perceptions of their learning experience. The empirical research is conducted with three groups and a control group who are asked to experience different empathic design techniques (direct contact between designers and users, indirect contact between designers and users, and role-playing) obtaining in the redesign of an existing kitchen and reflecting their learning and design outcomes on an online session in virtual meetings. Qualitative data collection methods consist of behavioral observations, the researcher's logbook, interviews, and design conversation protocols obtained by video recordings of the Zoom meetings. Quantitative data collection methods include using a questionnaire and survey as instruments and assessment of end products. Thematic analysis was conducted to study data from interviews and design. Results indicated that an empathic design process positively indicated students' perceptions of their learning experience and enhanced their self-awareness and design awareness. In addition, empathic design improved students' problem-solving skills, helped them attain universal design solutions easily, and shortened the design process time. The role-playing technique was the most efficient compared to other techniques for raising students' empathy and proposing universal design solutions.Item Open Access A classification matrix proposal for digital fabrication techniques in architecture(2018-11) Öztürk, SelenThis thesis investigates the relationship between digital fabrication techniques and the design constraints, such as function and materials, which are determined during architectural design processes by architects. This relationship is formulated through a matrix. Digital fabrication techniques are generally discussed upon and decided at the last step of a design process. This study roots from the idea that knowing which technique to use for fabrication affects the design process. In that sense, ‘according to which constraints which technique suits the design intention best’ should aid the designers. To propose a classification matrix two steps are practiced: first, as digital fabrication is a newly developing area, there are confusions, shifts, and overlaps of terminology among fabrication techniques; thus a simplification and classification in the terminology is needed. Such a classification is carried out in this thesis through recurrence tables based on a literature survey, the output of which constitutes the main column of the matrix. Secondly, a set of design constraints are determined by analyzing built projects, which are realized using specific digital fabrication techniques. This set of constraints establishes the columns of the matrix. The classification matrix aims to contribute both to educational and practical sides of architecture, proposing digital fabrication techniques to designers according to specific design constraints.Item Open Access A computer assisted universal design (CAUD) plug-in tool for architectural design process(2008) Afacan, YaseminManaging universal design process is a highly complex and challenging design task due to its multi-parameter characteristics. It becomes even more difficult while accommodating the needs of people with diverse impairments in architectural design process. Thus, this study aims to propose the development and implementation of an innovative computer-assisted universal design plug-in tool (CAUD) in the initial design phase that is compatible with the existing three-dimensional design software, SketchUp. Based on the theories and researches, the cognitive design strategies are analyzed for the efficiency of the knowledge support of the CAUD plug-in tool. Thus, the capabilities of the plug-in tool are defined according to the accommodation with an ideal cognitive strategy during analysis, synthesis and evaluation operations. Moreover, to achieve challenges of selecting the right set of universal design requirements within the plug-in tool, a prioritization technique that is based on the hybridization of the two techniques, the Planning Game (PG) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) using a cost-value approach is proposed. Through the proposed hybrid technique, requirement–design relationships are computed and the cost-value ratios of requirement priorities are represented. The study that is developed for universal kitchen design applications yielded a significant contribution to the universal design problem-solving process in a computer-aided design (CAD) environment. Finally, the results of the acceptability studies also showed that the CAUD plug-in tool is found in general useful, understandable, efficient, helpful and satisfactory.Item Open Access Integration of reasoning systems in architectural modeling activities(Elsevier Science, 1998) Demirkan, H.In the first phase of a design process, the designer understands the problem and assimilates it to a conceptual framework that is already known to him. Due to the nature of design problems, the reasoning methods and techniques for modeling are not uniform and clear. An integrated reasoning system is proposed for modeling the architectural processes. Such a system may help designers to make decisions based on past experiences as well as domain theory. The performance of the integration approach is compared with the pure case-based and rule-based reasoning systems to study the efficiency and effectiveness in the same domains. This thesis focuses on the transformation of design going beyond the human being a factor to the human starting to be the actor by creating new interactions and environments in the human-computer interaction and architecture. Thus, architectural design processes have become a subject to a radical paradigm shift by technologies and digital way of design thinking. This thesis explores the human actor in the user experience design process by implementing the ten usability heuristics of interaction design in the architectural design process. Recently, the use of user data and creating a design thinking from a compiled data in an interactive environment have become the main topic of user experience design. However, Cybernetics laid the foundations of user experience design with a systematic design process in architecture by proposing a data-based understanding. To consider architecture as a system of which the user is introduced as an active matter, ten usability heuristics, utilized in user experience design will be discussed and explored in the case of architecture. Some of the ten usability heuristics principles will be depicted in order to offer possible opportunities of human actor in architectural design.
