Comparative analysis on the cognition of designer's identity through digital presentation drawings

In parallel to the developments in computer technology and the broad use of computers in the design domain, computer media presentations are widely used today in architecture. Architectural presentation drawings are means of externalization the internal world, thoughts and identity of architects. However, the issue of the cognition of designer’s identity in computer media presentations is rarely addressed in the researches as compared to studies on traditional media presentations. On the contrary, computers are mainly regarded as reflecting their own identity rather than providing designers potentials to express themselves and to achieve differences and variations. In this study, a comparative analysis of the cognition of designer’s identity in architectural presentation drawings is carried out. The analysis provided enough evidence that similar to architectural presentation drawings of traditional media, computer media presentations hold potentials for the reflection of designer’s identity

A study on the encounter of the architect and the interior architect through web-based collaborative learning

This study focuses how two academic disciplines; architecture and interior architecture, have collaborated on a common project. It discusses educational issues and comments on possible improvement to interdisciplinary work offering design education curriculum recommendations. With the help of rapid developments in information and communication technologies, collaboration between geographically distributed, multidisciplinary teams is becoming standard practice in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. However, in design education students seldom have a chance to collaborate with other disciplines. By integrating information and communication technologies into design studio, encounter of different disciplines can be achieved and this expected to be effective in design curriculum. In this research, students from both disciplines collaboratively designed a Turkish Store in the Netherlands in a virtual design studio environment. Information on encounter of disciplines was obtained via questionnaires and interviews. The results indicate that the similarities of disciplines and the differences in social and cultural contexts provided a rich setting for exploring cross-cultural design collaboration and understanding of interdisciplinary spatial processes in terms of design students. Overlapping boundaries of architecture and interior architecture were perceived by design students and it was an effective experiment for their professional life.

Updating spatial orientation in virtual environments

Spatial reasoning in architectural design can be better understood by considering the factors that are affecting the spatial updating of the individual in an environment. This study focuses on the issue of spatial updating during rotational and translational movements in a virtual environment (VE). Rotational and translational movements based on an egocentric frame of reference via optic flow are compared separately in order to find the movement that is more efficient in spatial updating. Alignment of the objects with the viewer, different media utilized in architectural design drawings and gender are considered as factors that affect the spatial updating within the movement types. The results indicated that translational movement was more efficient in the judgment of relative directions. Furthermore, questions related to the objects that were aligned with the viewer were more correctly answered than on the misaligned ones. In comparison of hand, computer and both as drawing media, findings indicated that computer usage in architectural design drawings was the most effective medium in spatial updating process in a VE. Contrary to the previous studies, there was no significant difference between gender and movement types.
