Item Open Access Acoustical comfort evaluation in enclosed public spaces with a central atrium : a case study in food court of CEPA Shopping Center, Ankara(2009) Dökmeci, Papatya NurPhysical comfort requirements of users as thermal, visual, and acoustic comfort should be considered and studied in detail when designing and planning public spaces. The subjective auditory perception needs to be evaluated parallel with the objective acoustical incidences in a space. The food court area of CEPA Shopping Center with an atrium and a glass dome ceiling, in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara is chosen for the case. The aim of this study is to investigate acoustical parameters of the space via computer simulation program and examine the effect of architectural features of the space namely; central atrium, glass dome and the existing material applications. Considering the relationship between the users’ noise annoyance and the equivalent continuous sound pressure level (Leq) is also intended in this study. The research techniques are computer simulations, noise measurements and questionnaires. Acoustical parameters; reverberation time (RT), early decay time (EDT), sound transmission index (STI) and equivalent continuous sound pressure level (Leq) values are obtained by simulations and measurements. Questionnaires are used for understanding the noise annoyance and auditory perception of the users. The results show that the noise annoyance ratings correlate well with the Leq variances. The most dominantly perceived and the most annoying sound found to be correlated with the highest percentage for speech noise in the food court. Decay time (T30, EDT) results of the space that are derived from the ODEON 6.5 software are found to be very long as expected with a central atrium, glass dome ceiling and highly reflected material applications. In addition, the food court area is defined to be poor in terms of STI. High Leq values as well as long decay times that are present in the space are noted as factors increasing the noise annoyance of the users.Item Open Access Acoustical performance analysis of Bilkent University amphitheater "Odeon"(2004) Sü, ZühreThe aim of this study is analyzing the acoustical quality of Bilkent University Amphitheater ODEON by means of assessing the fundamental acoustical parameters for both speech and music. Defining the problems, specifying the causes of the problems and providing a foundation for the ongoing suggestions are within the frame of the analysis. The parameters such as reverberation time, early decay time, clarity, definition, lateral fraction, sound pressure level and sound transmission index are calculated by the computer simulation technique for their assessment to be carried out. Initially, the results of the simulation software are compared with the previous real-size measurements of Bilkent ODEON for the unoccupied condition of the amphitheater, in order to ensure the accuracy of the software. Proving to be a valid tool, the software namely ODEON Room Acoustics Program, is used in the calculations for the occupied condition of the amphitheater as a basis of the study. The results are evaluated from the acoustical design standpoint of a multipurpose hall, which are followed by the suggestions for the improvement of the existing acoustical performance of the amphitheater. Finally, the suggestions are supported through the simulation results of the new hall that is acoustically renovated.Item Open Access The effects of speech in interference in enclosed leisure spaces : a case of study in Bilkent Roll House, Ankara(2011) Gezginer, Pelin MeriçThe aim of this study is to investigate the speech interference of users in an open-planned multi-activities public leisure space. Bilkent Roll House was chosen as a leisure space because of its variety of activities in an open-plan such as bowling, dart, billiards, play station and dining area. In this respect, to analyze acoustical parameters and users characteristics of this study, a pilot and case study was undertaken by using questionnaires/intelligibility tests, computer simulations and real-size measurements. Questionnaires /speech intelligibility tests and Leq measurements were done in order to analyze noise annoyance ratings of the users of selected space as pilot study. The speech interference parameters measured as a case study are; Reverberation Time (T30), Speech Transmission Index (STI), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Equivalent Continuous A-weighted Sound Pressure Level (Leq A). The results showed that reverberation characteristics of Bilkent Roll House are at the required range. However, it was observed that, the speech parameters (STI & SNR) results are insufficient in terms of speech communication. In addition, the noise level (Leq A) of the activities in Bilkent Roll House increases slightly in time. However, the results of Leq A at the dining area of Bilkent Roll House indicate that, users are affected in an informal way by the speech interference, and instead of increasing their voice level, they prefer to deal with their main activity to provide speech intelligibility in multi-activity spaces.Item Open Access Noise problem in primary schools in Ankara(1994) Özüpek, AyşegülIn this study, the problem of noise in primary schools is examined, by indicating the negative effects of this problem on the physiological, psychological, and social well-being of human beings, and on the effectiveness of teaching and learning process. An experimental study was done so as to make an evaluation of the present situation in one of the concert halls in Ankara.Item Open Access Reflections on environmental control: luminous and sonic environments inside the design studio(1995) Önen, ÖmerIn this thesis, two environmental control parameters -lighting and acoustics - are studied. Since one of architecture's primary concerns is to provide human beings with comfort, emphasis is put on the approach that design decisions pertaining to lighting and acoustics should be considered in the earlier phases of the designing process. The design studio has been chosen since it houses many different functions simultaneously, with its significance as the place where design education actually begins. Accordingly, norms, numeric standards and common designing principles are compiled for design studios. Then, the lighting (luminance, illuminance) and acoustics (sound pressure level) performances of the design studios of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture of Bilkent University are measured. The results are, finally, evaluated and concluded with general technical advice for the amelioration of the measured studios.Item Open Access Understanding soundscape in public spaces : a case study in Akköprü Metro Station, Ankara(2014) Bora, ZeynepIn 2008, a working group of ISO/TC 43/SCI/WG 54 “Perceptual Assessment of Soundscape Quality of the International Organization for Standardization” was established and they published the first part of standardization “ISO 12913-1 Acoustics-Soundscape-Definition and conceptual framework” In their framework the acoustic environment divides into two main categories according to places; indoor and outdoor acoustic environment. The working group ISO/TC 43/SCI/WG 54 is being to standardize the methods and parameters of soundscape quality outdoors and point out both the negative and positive aspects of sounds environment as perceived by people. Besides the soundscape quality outdoors, indoors are also needed to be studying in the field. This study has been designed to understand the indoor acoustic environment of the metro station which is chosen as a public space. Aim of this study is to find out both negative and positive aspects of indoor acoustic environment as perceived by users in metro station. In order to compare outdoor and indoor soundscape qualities, Akköprü Metro Station and its immediate surrounding were chosen as a case study in Ankara, Turkey. The park shared the same environment with metro station was chosen as an outdoor environment/open public space. Entrance of the metro station was chosen as a semi open public space and the platform of the metro station was chosen as an indoor environment/enclosed public space. Within “a degree of enclosure” context, objective, subjective and psychoacoustics parameters for soundscape quality were measured in three spaces. As objective parameters, A-Weighted Equivalent Continuous Sound Levels (LeqA), Sound Pressure Levels" (SPL), Reverberation Time (RT), Speech Transmission Index (STI) were measured. For subjective parameters, sound recordings were taken with soundwalk method and noise annoyance surveys were applied simultaneously. A listening test and a survey were prepared to understand if spaces could be recognized/understood just by hearing. For psychoacoustics parameters, questionnaires were prepared and subjects were asked to fill in personal information and for each sound recording they listen, they were asked to fill in four open ended questions and choose from seventeen adjective pairs prepared with one to five likert scale. Ninety applicants participated in a listening test. Results showed that, acoustical measurements were higher than the permissible limits given in regulations. According to the noise annoyance survey results, enclosed spaces have the highest noise annoyance rating. Demographic factors such as age, gender, education level and space recognition did not showed any significant correlation. According to the listening test results, 70% of the subjects were able to determine spaces correctly as open, semi open or enclosed. Only 55% of the subjects were able to recognize the spaces. Soundmarks of the spaces show similarities. In open spaces subjects tended to choose adjectives such as "pleasant", "calming", "natural", "joyful"; while in enclosed spaces they tended to choose adjectives such as "unpleasant", "stressing", "artificial" , "empty".
