Item Open Access Calculation of radome-enclosed aperture antenna in 3-D(IEEE, 2010-09) Sukharevsky, I.; Altintas, AyhanThe exact mathematical model of an aperture antenna and the image theory are used to develop exact and PO integral representations of the fields radiated by radome-enclosed aperture antenna. The desired problem is reduced to finding fields of a plane wave diffracted on the "symmetrized" radome. The passage of the wave through the wall of the radome is analysed by means of geometrical optics. Caustic influence is taken into account, and the contribution of stationary phase points of reflected field to the far-side radiation is discussed. Radiation patterns for antennas with a specified ampliphase distribution enclosed in spherical and parabolic radomes are analysed. © 2010 IEEE.Item Open Access Exact solution for scalar diffraction between tilted and translated planes using impulse functions over a surface(Optical Society of America, 2011-02-04) Onural, L.The diffraction relation between a plane and another plane that is both tilted and translated with respect to the first one is revisited. The derivation of the result becomes easier when the impulse function over a surface is used as a tool. Such an approach converts the original 2D problem to an intermediate 3D problem and thus allows utilization of easy-to-interpret Fourier transform properties due to rotation and translation. An exact solution for the scalar monochromatic propagating waves case when the propagation direction is restricted to be in the forward direction is presented.Item Open Access Polar vs. nonpolar InGaN/GaN quantum heterostructures: Opposite quantum confined electroabsorption and carrier dynamics behavior(IEEE, 2010) Sarı, Emre; Nizamoğlu, Sedat; Choi J.H.; Lee, S.J.; Baik, K.H.; Lee I.H.; Baek J.H.; Hwang, S.-M.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe present a study of quantum confined electroabsorption and carrier dynamics in polar c-plane and nonpolar a-plane InGaN/GaN quantum heterostructures. We demonstrate red-shifting absorption edge, due to quantum confined Stark effect, in nonpolar InGaN/GaN quantum structures in response to increased electric field, while we show the opposite effect with blue-shifting absorption spectra in polar quantum structures. Moreover, confirmed by time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we prove that carrier lifetimes increase with increasing electric field for nonpolar structures, whereas the opposite occurs for polar ones.Item Open Access Spatial filtering using dielectric photonic crystals at beam-type excitation(American Institute of Physics, 2010-12-06) Colak, E.; Cakmak, A. O.; Serebryannikov, A. E.; Özbay, EkmelSpatial filtering is demonstrated at beam-type excitations by utilizing finite thickness slabs of two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals (PCs) showing exotic Fabry-Perot resonances that are preserved over a wide range of variation of the incidence angle. Bandstop and dual-bandpass filtering effects are illustrated theoretically and the corresponding filters are validated in the microwave experiments by using square-lattice PCs. It is shown that the basic transmission features that were observed earlier for a plane-wave illumination are also recognizable at beam-type excitations. The proposed spatial filtering mechanism exhibits directional beaming. The desired widths and the locations of the passbands and stopbands are attainable in the angle domain with a proper choice of the operating frequency for the given excitation characteristics.Item Open Access Unidirectional transmission in photonic-crystal gratings at beam-type illumination(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2010) Cakmak, A.O.; Colak, E.; Serebryannikov, A.E.; Özbay, EkmelUnidirectional transmission is studied theoretically and experimentally for the gratings with one-side corrugations (non-symmetric gratings), which are based on two-dimensional photonic crystals composed of alumina rods. The unidirectional transmission appears at a fixed angle of incidence as a combined effect of the peculiar dispersion features of the photonic crystal and the properly designed corrugations. It is shown that the basic unidirectional transmission characteristics, which are observed at a plane-wave illumination, are preserved at Gaussian-beam and horn antenna illuminations. The main attention is paid to the single-beam unidirectional regime, which is associated with the strong directional selectivity arising due to the first negative diffraction order. An additional degree of freedom for controlling the transmission of the electromagnetic waves is obtained by making use of the asymmetric corrugations at the photonic crystal interface. © 2010 Optical Society of America.
