Item Open Access Blind federated edge learning(IEEE, 2021-03-19) Amiri, M. M.; Duman, Tolga M.; Gündüz, D.; Kulkarni, S. R.; Poor, H. V.We study federated edge learning (FEEL), where wireless edge devices, each with its own dataset, learn a global model collaboratively with the help of a wireless access point acting as the parameter server (PS). At each iteration, wireless devices perform local updates using their local data and the most recent global model received from the PS, and send their local updates to the PS over a wireless fading multiple access channel (MAC). The PS then updates the global model according to the signal received over the wireless MAC, and shares it with the devices. Motivated by the additive nature of the wireless MAC, we propose an analog `over-the-air' aggregation scheme, in which the devices transmit their local updates in an uncoded fashion. However, unlike recent literature on over-the-air FEEL, here we assume that the devices do not have channel state information (CSI), while the PS has imperfect CSI. On the other hand, the PS is equipped with multiple antennas to alleviate the destructive effect of the channel, exacerbated due to the lack of perfect CSI. We design a receive beamforming scheme at the PS, and show that it can compensate for the lack of perfect CSI when the PS has a sufficient number of antennas. We also derive the convergence rate of the proposed algorithm highlighting the impact of the lack of perfect CSI, as well as the number of PS antennas. Both the experimental results and the convergence analysis illustrate the performance improvement of the proposed algorithm with the number of PS antennas, where the wireless fading MAC becomes deterministic despite the lack of perfect CSI when the PS has a sufficiently large number of antennas.Item Open Access Fundamental limits on time delay estimation in dispersed spectrum cognitive radio systems(IEEE, 2009) Gezici, Sinan; Celebi, H.; Poor, H. V.; Arslan, H.In this paper, fundamental limits on time delay estimation are studied for cognitive radio systems, which facilitate opportunistic use of spectral resources. First, a generic Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) expression is obtained in the case of unknown channel coefficients and carrier-frequency offsets (CFOs) for cognitive radio systems with dispersed spectrum utilization. Then, various modulation schemes are considered, and the effects of unknown channel coefficients and CFOs on the accuracy of time delay estimation are quantified. Finally, numerical studies are performed in order to verify the theoretical analysis.Item Open Access Iterative ("Turbo") multiuser detectors for impulse radio systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2008) Fishler, E.; Gezici, Sinan; Poor, H. V.In recent years, there has been a growing interest in multiple access communication systems that spread their transmitted energy over very large bandwidths. These systems, which are referred to as ultra wide-band (UWB) systems, have various advantages over narrow-band and conventional wide-band systems. The importance of multiuser detection for achieving high data or low bit error rates in these systems has already been established in several studies. This paper presents iterative (“turbo”) multiuser detection for impulse radio (IR) UWB systems over multipath channels. While this approach is demonstrated for UWB signals, it can also be used in other systems that use similar types of signaling. When applied to the type of signals used by UWB systems, the complexity of the proposed detector can be quite low. Also, two very low complexity implementations of the iterative multiuser detection scheme are proposed based on Gaussian approximation and soft interference cancellation. The performance of these detectors is assessed using simulations that demonstrate their favorable properties.Item Open Access Position estimation via ultra-wide-band signals(IEEE, 2009-02-27) Gezici, Sinan; Poor, H. V.The high time resolution of ultra-wide-band (UWB) signals facilitates very precise position estimation in many scenarios, which makes a variety applications possible. This paper reviews the problem of position estimation in UWB systems, beginning with an overview of the basic structure of UWB signals and their positioning applications. This overview is followed by a discussion of various position estimation techniques, with an emphasis on time-based approaches, which are particularly suitable for UWB positioning systems. Practical issues arising in UWB signal design and hardware implementation are also discussed.Item Open Access Theoretical limits on time delay estimation for ultra-wideband cognitive radios(IEEE, 2008-09) Gezici, Sinan; Celebi, H.; Arslan, H.; Poor, H. V.In this paper, theoretical limits on time delay estimation are studied for ultra-wideband (UWB) cognitive radio systems. For a generic UWB spectrum with dispersed bands, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived for unknown channel coefficients and carrier-frequency offsets (CFOs). Then, the effects of unknown channel coefficients and CFOs are investigated for linearly and non-linearly modulated training signals by obtaining specific CRLB expressions. It is shown that for linear modulations with a constant envelope, the effects of the unknown parameters can be mitigated. Finally, numerical results, which support the theoretical analysis, are presented. © 2008 IEEE.Item Open Access Time delay estimation in cognitive radio systems(IEEE, 2009-12) Koçak, Fatih; Çelebi, H.; Gezici, Sinan; Qaraqe, K. A.; Arslan, H.; Poor, H. V.In cognitive radio systems, secondary users can utilize multiple dispersed bands that are not used by primary users. In this paper, time delay estimation of signals that occupy multiple dispersed bands is studied. First, theoretical limits on time delay estimation are reviewed. Then, two-step time delay estimators that provide trade-offs between computational complexity and performance are investigated. In addition, asymptotic optimality properties of the two-step time delay estimators are discussed. Finally, simulation results are presented to explain the theoretical results. © 2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Time-delay estimation in dispersed spectrum cognitive radio systems(SpringerOpen, 2010) Kocak, F.; Celebi, H.; Gezici, Sinan; Qaraqe, K. A.; Arslan, H.; Poor, H. V.Time-delay estimation is studied for cognitive radio systems, which facilitate opportunistic use of spectral resources. A two-step approach is proposed to obtain accurate time-delay estimates of signals that occupy multiple dispersed bands simultaneously, with significantly lower computational complexity than the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. In the first step of the proposed approach, an ML estimator is used for each band of the signal in order to estimate the unknown parameters of the signal occupying that band. Then, in the second step, the estimates from the first step are combined in various ways in order to obtain the final time-delay estimate. The combining techniques that are used in the second step are called optimal combining, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) combining, selection combining, and equal combining. It is shown that the performance of the optimal combining technique gets very close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound at high SNRs. These combining techniques provide various mechanisms for diversity combining for time-delay estimation and extend the concept of diversity in communications systems to the time-delay estimation problem in cognitive radio systems. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed estimators and to verify the theoretical analysis.Item Open Access Two-step time of arrival estimation for pulse-based ultra-wideband systems(SpringerOpen, 2008) Gezici, Sinan; Sahinoglu Z.; Molisch, A. F.; Kobayashi, H.; Poor, H. V.In cooperative localization systems, wireless nodes need to exchange accurate position-related information such as time-of-arrival (TOA) and angle-of-arrival (AOA), in order to obtain accurate location information. One alternative for providing accurate position-related information is to use ultra-wideband (UWB) signals. The high time resolution of UWB signals presents a potential for very accurate positioning based on TOA estimation. However, it is challenging to realize very accurate positioning systems in practical scenarios, due to both complexity/cost constraints and adverse channel conditions such as multipath propagation. In this paper, a two-step TOA estimation algorithm is proposed for UWB systems in order to provide accurate TOA estimation under practical constraints. In order to speed up the estimation process, the first step estimates a coarse TOA of the received signal based on received signal energy. Then, in the second step, the arrival time of the first signal path is estimated by considering a hypothesis testing approach. The proposed scheme uses low-rate correlation outputs and is able to perform accurate TOA estimation in reasonable time intervals. The simulation results are presented to analyze the performance of the estimator.Item Open Access UWB localization algorithms(John Wiley & Sons, 2009) Gezici, Sinan; Poor, H.
