Item Open Access Brightly luminescent Cu-Zn-In-S/ZnS Core/shell quantum dots in salt matrices(De Gruyter, 2019) Lox, J. F. L.; Eichler, F.; Erdem, Talha; Adam, M.; Gaponik, N.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Lesnyak, V.; Eychmüller, A.In the past decades cadmium-free quantum dots (QDs), among which are quaternary colloidal Cu-Zn-In-S/ZnS (CZIS/ZnS) core/shell nanocrystals (NCs), have attracted great scientific interest. Particularly, their low toxicity and the possibility to tune their photoluminescence (PL) properties by varying the composition in the multicomponent system make them highly attractive for applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Thus, the demands for high quality CZIS/ZnS QDs and methods to process them into bulk materials stimulate investigations of these nanomaterials. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of CZIS/ZnS core/shell NCs via a surfactant induced nucleation process, which emit in various colors covering the range from 520 nm to 620 nm possessing high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) up to 47%. Furthermore, the as synthesized NCs were successfully integrated into two different salt matrices [Na2B4O7 (Borax) and LiCl] using two different approaches. The commonly used incorporation of the NCs into Borax salt led to salt crystals emitting from 540 nm to 600 nm with PLQYs up to 24%. By encapsulating the QDs into LiCl, brightly emitting NCs-in-LiCl powders with the PL covering a range from 520 nm to 650 nm with PLQYs of up to 14% were obtained. As a proof of concept, the fabrication of a color conversion LED using NCs encapsulated into LiCl demonstrated the applicability of the encapsulated NCs.Item Open Access Color enrichment solids of spectrally pure colloidal quantum wells for wide color Span in displays(Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 2022-07-18) Erdem, T.; Soran Erdem, Z.; Işık, Furkan; Shabani, Farzan; Yazici, A. F.; Mutlugün, E.; Gaponik, N.; Demir, H. V.Colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) are excellent candidates for lighting and display applications owing to their narrow emission linewidths (<30 nm). However, realizing their efficient and stable light-emitting solids remains a challenge. To address this problem, stable, efficient solids of CQWs incorporated into crystal matrices are shown. Green-emitting CdSe/CdS core/crown and red-emitting CdSe/CdS core/shell CQWs wrapped into these crystal solids are employed as proof-of-concept demonstrations of light-emitting diode (LED) integration targeting a wide color span in display backlighting. The quantum yield of the green- and red-emitting CQW-containing solids of sucrose reach ≈20% and ≈55%, respectively, while emission linewidths and peak wavelengths remain almost unaltered. Furthermore, sucrose matrix preserves ≈70% and ≈45% of the initial emission intensity of the green- and red-emitting CQWs after >60 h, respectively, which is ≈4× and ≈2× better than the drop-casted CQW films and reference (KCl) host. Color-converting LEDs of these green- and red-emitting CQWs in sucrose possess luminous efficiencies 122 and 189 lm W−1elect, respectively. With the liquid crystal display filters, this becomes 39 and 86 lm W−1elect, respectively, providing with a color gamut 25% broader than the National Television Standards Committee standard. These results prove that CQW solids enable efficient and stable color converters for display and lighting applications.Item Open Access Excitonic improvement of colloidal nanocrystals in salt powder matrix for quality lighting and color enrichment(OSA - The Optical Society, 2016) Erdem, T.; Soran-Erdem, Z.; Kelestemur, Y.; Gaponik, N.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanHere we report excitonic improvement in color-converting colloidal nanocrystal powders enabled by co-integrating nonpolar greenand red-emitting nanocrystal energy transfer pairs into a single LiCl salt matrix. This leads to nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) between the cointegrated nanocrystals in the host matrix. Here we systematically studied the resulting NRET process by varying donor and acceptor concentrations in the powders. We observed that NRET is a strong function of both of the nanocrystal concentrations and that NRET efficiency increases with increasing acceptor concentration. Nevertheless, with increasing donor concentration in the powders, NRET efficiency was found to first increase (up to a maximum level of 53.9%) but then to decrease. As a device demonstrator, we employed these NRET-improved nanocrystal powders as color-converters on blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs), with the resulting hybrid LED exhibiting a luminous efficiency >70 lm/Welect . The proposed excitonic nanocrystal powders potentially hold great promise for quality lighting and color enrichment applications.Item Open Access Highly efficient nonradiative energy transfer mediated light harvesting in water using aqueous CdTe quantum dot antennas(Optical Society of America, 2010) Mutlugun, E.; Samarskaya, O.; Ozel, T.; Cicek, N.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmuller, A.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe present light harvesting of aqueous colloidal quantum dots to nonradiatively transfer their excitonic excitation energy efficiently to dye molecules in water, without requiring ligand exchange. These as-synthesized CdTe quantum dots that are used as donors to serve as light-harvesting antennas are carefully optimized to match the electronic structure of Rhodamine B molecules used as acceptors for light harvesting in aqueous medium. By varying the acceptor to donor concentration ratio, we measure the light harvesting factor, along with substantial lifetime modifications of these water-soluble quantum dots, from 25.3 ns to 7.2 ns as a result of their energy transfer with efficiency levels up to 86%. Such nonradiative energy transfer mediated light harvesting in aqueous medium holds great promise for future quantum dot multiplexed dye biodetection systems. V.; Ozel, T.; Mutlugun, E.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmuller, A.; Lavrinenko, A. V.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Gaponenko, S. V.We theoretically demonstrate that nanocomposites made of colloidal semiconductor quantum dot monolayers placed between metal nanoparticle monolayers can function as multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials. Depending on the thickness of the spacer between the quantum dot and nanoparticle layers, the effective permittivity tensor of the nanocomposite is shown to become indefinite, resulting in increased photonic density of states and strong enhancement of quantum dot luminescence. This explains the results of recent experiments [T. Ozel et al., ACS Nano 5, 1328 (2011)] and confirms that hyperbolic metamaterials are capable of increasing the radiative decay rate of emission centers inside them. The proposed theoretical framework can also be used to design quantum-dot/nanoplasmonic composites with optimized luminescence enhancement. K.; Hickey, S. G.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmuller, A.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanColloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been extensively explored for numerous applications ranging from optoelectronics to biotechnology. This strong demand for the colloidal QDs arises because of their favorable optical and electronic properties. From the application points of view, QDs typically need to be used in their solid form, as opposed to their as-synthesized dispersion form. For immobilization of QDs and homogeneity of their films, various polymers have been used to host QDs within solid media. However, the integration of QDs into a polymeric medium is commonly complex, which requires a high level of understanding to provide optical quality. © 2012 IEEE.Item Open Access Large-Area (over 50 cm × 50 cm) Freestanding Films of Colloidal InP/ZnS Quantum Dots(American Chemical Society, 2012) Mutlugun, E.; Hernandez Martinez, P. L.; Eroglu, C.; Coskun, Y.; Erdem, T.; Sharma, V. K.; Unal, E.; Panda, S. K.; Hickey, S. G.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmuller, A.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanWe propose and demonstrate the fabrication of flexible, freestanding films of InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) using fatty acid ligands across very large areas (greater than 50 cm x 50 cm), which have been developed for remote phosphor applications in solid-state lighting. Embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix, although the formation of stand alone films using other QDs commonly capped with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) and oleic acid is not efficient, employing myristic acid as ligand in the synthesis of these QDs, which imparts a strongly hydrophobic character to the thin film, enables film formation and ease of removal even on surprisingly large areas, thereby avoiding the need for ligand exchange. When pumped by a blue LED, these Cd-free QD films allow for high color rendering, warm white light generation with a color rendering index of 89.30 and a correlated color temperature of 2298 K. In the composite film, the temperature-dependent emission kinetics and energy transfer dynamics among different-sized InP/ZnS QDs are investigated and a model is proposed. High levels of energy transfer efficiency (up to 80%) and strong donor lifetime modification (from 18 to 4 ns) are achieved. The suppression of the nonradiative channels is observed when the hybrid film is cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The lifetime changes of the donor and acceptor InP/ZnS QDs in the film as a result of the energy transfer are explained well by our theoretical model based on the exciton-exciton interactions among the dots and are in excellent agreement with the experimental results. The understanding of these excitonic interactions is essential to facilitate improvements in the fabrication of photometrically high quality nanophosphors. The ability to make such large-area, flexible, freestanding Cd-free QD films pave the way for environmentally friendly phosphor applications including flexible, surface-emitting light engines.Item Open Access Multi-layered CdSe/ZnS/CdSe heteronanocrystals to generate and tune white light(2008-11) Nizamoğlu, Sedat; Mutlugün, Evren; Özel, Tuncay; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Sapra, S.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmüller, A.In this study, tuneable white light generation by controlling CdSe/ZnS/CdSe core/shell/shell heteronanocrystals integrated on InGaN/GaN light emitting diodes was presented. These multilayered quantum dots, also known as onion-like heterostructures, were designed and synthesized to emit in red (around 600 nm) from the CdSe core and in green (around 550 nm) from the CdSe shell. By designing and hybridizing these red-green emitting heterostructures on blue emitting LEDs, an integrated WLEDs on a single chip was demonstrated. By controlling the number of integrated heteronanocrystals, their (x,y) tristimulus coordinates were tuned from (0.26,0.23) to (0.37,0.36), along with their corresponding correlated color temperature tuned from 27413 K to 4192 K and the luminous efficacy of their optical radiation (the ratio of the emitted luminous flux to the radiant flux) tuned from 258 lm/W to 375 lm/W. Further investigation on the change of in-film optical properties of these heteronanocrystals with respect to their in-solution emission was performed.Item Open Access Observation of anisotropic emission from semiconductor quantum dots in nanocomposites of metal nanoparticles(IEEE, 2010) Özel, Tuncay; Nizamoglu, Sedat; Sefunc, Mustafa A.; Samarskaya, Olga; Özel, İlkem O.; Mutlugun, Evren; Lesnyak V.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmuller, A.; Gaponenko, S.V.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan[No abstract available]Item Open Access Surface-state emission enhancement in white-luminophor CdS nanocrystals using localized plasmon coupling(IEEE, 2008-11) Özel, Tuncay; Soğancı, İbrahim Murat; Nizamoğlu, Sedat; Huyal, İlkem Özge; Mutlugün, Evren; Sapra, S.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmüller, A.; Demir, Hilmi VolkanTo make surface-state emission stronger than band-edge emission for the first time, we proposed and demonstrated plasmon coupling of the surface-state emission from the traps in these CdS nano-luminophors using localized plasmons.Item Open Access White CdS nanoluminophore based tunable hybrid light emitting diodes(IEEE, 2007) Nizamoğlu, Sedat; Mutlugün, Evren; Akyüz, Özgün; Kosku-Perkgöz, Nihan; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Liebscher, L.; Sapra, S.; Gaponik, N.; Eychmüller, A.The study aims to fabricate and demonstrate hybrid white light emitting diodes that integrate white emitting CdS nanoluminophores with high light quality. Results show that the white light properties of these hybrid WLED (including (x,y) chromaticity coordinates, color temperature, and color rendering index (Ra)) are conveniently tuned as desired across the white region by controlling the number of these surface state emitting nanoluminophores hybridized on the n-UV LED platform. In this tuning process, with the increasing number of the hybridized surface state emitting nanocrystals, it is observed that (x,y) and Ra increase while Tc decreases.
