Item Open Access Composition and the uncanny : a methodological account of composition in visual arts(Bilkent University, 2001) Ertem, FulyaThis study aims at giving an account of composition in visual arts by basing itself on the notion of uncanny. In that respect the works of three different surrealist artists, Max Ernst, Giorgio De Chirico, and Joan Miro, will be analysed in terms of their compositional uncanniness, by taking into consideration writers who analysed the uncanniness of these artists’ works. As an addition to those writers’ ideas, the aim of this thesis will be to find some new aspects of compositional uncanny in order to challenge the traditional account of composition in visual arts, as a source of visual resolution into unity.Item Open Access Undoing recognition : a critical approach to pose in photography(Bilkent University, 2006) Ertem, FulyaThis study aims to give an account of the act of posing in photography in terms of the self/image relationship in order to foreground an unexplored aspect of the pose that is its potential to question (self-)recognition and/or (self-)identification. By departing from an analysis of portrait photographs belonging to different cultures and historical periods, this thesis attempts to provide a critical approach to the act of posing through a productive communication between visual and theoretical texts and provides a new approach to the subject/image relationship.
