dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstract1915 yılında İstanbul’da doğan ve Türk basın tarihinde yaptığı çalışmalar ile çok önemli bir yere sahip olan gazeteci ve muhabir Selami Akpınar’ın hayatı ve mesleki tecrübeleri bu araştırmanın konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Meslek hayatına 1940 yılında Vatan gazetesinde başlayan Akpınar, arşivde çalıştığı altı yılın ardından muhabirlik yapmaya başlamıştır. Kore’de savaş muhabirliği yapan ve emekliliğine kadar Türkiye Gazeteciler Birliği üyesi olan Akpınar, meslektaşlarının haklarını ve mesleğinin çıkarsız bir şekilde icra edilmesini savunmuştur. Yabancı bir gazetede yer alan Türkiye aleyhine bir yazıyı Türkçeye çevirdiği için hapis cezası alan ve 27 Mayıs darbesine kadar hapiste kalan Akpınar, sonraki süreçte hapse girmesine sebep olan yazının sahibi Pulliam tarafından Amerika’ya davet edilerek Amerikan basınını ve gazeteciliğini inceleme fırsatı bulmuştur. Daha sonra tekrar Türkiye’ye dönen Akpınar, Anadolu Ajansı İstanbul Müdürlüğü görevini yürütmüş ve dönemin basın sansürlerine bizzat tanıklık etmiştir. Cumhuriyet dönemi Türk basınında öncü olarak yer alması ve mesleğinde edindiği önemli tecrübelerle dönemindeki gazetecilik mesleğinin önemli temsilcilerinden olması ile tanınan Selami Akpınar’ın Türkiye gazetecilik tarihindeki dönemsel değişim ve gelişmelere ışık tutacak olan kişisel yaşamının, şahsi gazetecilik görüşünün ve tecrübelerinin incelenmesi bu araştırmanın temel amacını oluşturmaktadır. Bununla birlikte 2010 yılında vefat eden Selami Akpınar’ın oğlu Hüseyin Akpınar ile yapılan röportaj ve kendisinin de yazdığı yazıları içeren birincil kaynakların araştırılması ile edinilen bilgiler ışığında Akpınar’ın yaşamı hakkında ayrıntılı ve kapsamlı bilgilere yer verilerek araştırma konusu etkili bir şekilde sunulmaya çalışılmıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThe subject of this study is to understand the life and professional experience of Selami Akpınar, who played an important role in the history of Turkish press as a journalist and reporter. Akpınar, was born in İstanbul in 1915, started his career in Vatan Newspaper and later started to work as a reporter. He became the war correspondent in Korea and until retirement as a member of the Türkiye Gazeteciler Birliği (Turkey Journalists Union), Akpınar defended the rights of the journalists and advocated honest adherence to the profession of journalism. As his translation of a foreign article in a newspaper which was against Turkey, Akpınar, who was sentenced to prison and remained in prison until the 27 May Revolution, was invited to America by Pulliam, the owner of the article that caused him to go to jail, and he found the opportunity to examine the American press and journalism. Then when he returned to Turkey, he served as the director of Anadolu Ajansı (Anadolu Agency) and he personally witnessed the press restrictions of the period. The examination of personal life, subjective journalist approach and experiences of Selami Akpınar who is known as one of the pioneers of his job and one of the most important representatives of his period, in the Republican period of Turkish press, with his experiences in journalism constitutes the main purpose of this research. Besides in this research; with the help of the interview made with Hüseyin Akpınar, the son of Selami Akpınar who passed away in 2010, and the information obtained by researching the primary sources also including the writings he wrote personally, the subject of the project was supported with detailed and comprehensive information about the life of Akpınar, so the project was tried to be presented effectively.en_US
