dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.en_US

dc.description.abstractBu makalede bilim insanı Umran İnan’ın hayatı ve bilim dünyasındaki başarıları ele alınmaktadır. Bununla birlikte makalede Türkiye’deki beyin göçü sorunu ve yirminci yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Türkiye’deki yüksek öğretimin durumu Umran İnan’ın düşünceleri ve harici kaynaklar kullanılarak ele alınmaktadır. Makalede ilk olarak Umran İnan’ın kısa biyografisinden ve araştırmanın kapsamından bahsedilmiştir. Daha sonra Umran İnan’ın çocukluk ve gençlik yılları Umran İnan ile yapılan röportajdan yararlanılarak ele alınmıştır. Sonrasında Umran İnan’ın ODTÜ’de başlayarak Stanford’a ve son olarak Koç Üniversitesi rektörlüğüne ilerleyen yüksek öğretim serüveni açıklanmaktadır. Aynı zamanda Umran İnan’ın bilim dünyasındaki başarıları ve alanına katkıları da bu bölümde anlatılmaktadır. Makalenin son kısmı Türkiye’deki eğitim üstünde yoğunlaşmaktadır. Türkiye’deki beyin göçü sorunu ve Umran İnan’ın döneminde Türkiye’deki yüksek öğretim durumu Umran İnan’ın da tecrübeleri ışığında ele alınmıştır.en_US
dc.description.abstractThis paper considers Umran İnan, his life, and his contributions to the scientific community. In addition to this, the brain drain problem in Türkiye and Türkiye’s high education standards in the second half of the 20th century have been investigated in the light of Umran İnan’s thoughts and other resources. The paper starts with a short biography of Umran İnan and the scope of the research. Afterward, the childhood and early life of Umran İnan were investigated in the life of his interview. Then, Umran İnan’s high education career, starting from METU, proceeding with Stanford University, and rectorship at Koç University has been elucidated. This part also compromises Umran İnan’s achievements in scientific fields. The last part of the paper concentrates on education in Türkiye. Brain drain problem in Türkiye and the high education standards in Türkiye in the time of Umran İnan have been investigated in relation to Umran İnan’s life experiences.en_US
