Ulucanlar Cezaevi, 1923 yılında askeri bir depo olarak inşa edilmiş bir kurum olup 1925’te bir cezaevi olarak kullanım görmeye başladı. 2004 yılına kadar hizmet veren bu kurum, uzun yıllar boyunca Türk toplumunu ve siyasetini çok farklı yönlerden etkiledi. Günümüzde idamların sıkça gerçekleştirildiği ve siyasi mahkûmların tutulduğu bir yer olarak bilinen Ulucanlar cezaevi tarihimizde karanlık ve en az bir o kadar da önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu araştırmada, Ulucanlar Cezaevi ve Ulucanlar Cezaevinin tarihçesi ile ilgili belgelerden, raporlardan, kitaplardan ve Ulucanlar Cezaevi müzesinin müdürü Merve Bayıksel ile yapılan röportajdan yola çıkarak Ulucanlar Cezaevinin tarihi, Türk siyasetindeki yeri, cezaevinin koşullarını, Türk ceza sistemine ve kamuoyuna etkisi, günümüzde nasıl algılandığı ve Ulucanlar Cezaevinden çıkarabileceklerimiz anlatılmıştır. Türk tarihinin önemli bir bölümü faaliyet gösteren ve siyasi mücadele ve idamlar ile nam salan Ulucanlar Cezaevinin incelenmesi büyük önem arz etmektedir.

Ulucanlar Prison, is a complex constructed in 1923 as a military warehouse which is then converted into a prison in 1925. Being in service until 2004, this complex has impacted the Turkish society and politics in many different aspects. In recent times, more commonly known as a place of frequent executions and a place to hold political prisoners, has a dark and as significant place in our history. In this research paper, the history of Ulucanlar Prison is examined with the aid of documents, reports, books and the interview with the director of the Ulucanlar Prison Museum, Merve Bayıksel. The topics examined in detail are Ulucanlar’s place in Turkish politics, the conditions of the prison and its prisoners, Ulucanlar Prisons’s effect on Turkish society, how this effect was effective in desire to change Turkish Criminal Law, how the prison is perceived today and what lessons we can learn from Ulucanlar Prison. As the prison came into prominence in many periods of Turkish political history and as it was notorious with political prisoners and executions; the examination of Ulucanlar Prison carries utmost importance.
