dc.descriptionThe History of Turkey course (HIST200) is a requirement for all Bilkent undergraduates. It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.

dc.description.abstractTürkiye gerek coğrafi özellikleri gerekse kültürü dolayısıyla özellikle Cumhuriyet'in kuruluşunun hemen sonrasında en büyük gelir kalemi tarım olan ülkeler arasında yer almıştır. Bu tarım ürünleri içerisinde tütün hem Türkiye topraklarına gösterdiği uyum hem de sağladığı yüksek kazanç ile Türk çiftçisi ve Türkiye tarımı için farklı bir yere sahip olmuştur. Bu tarım ürünün öneminin farkında olunması sebebiyle Cumhuriyet'in ilk yıllarından itibaren tütün ayrıcalıklı tarım ürünleri arasında yer almıştır. Dünya üzerinde Şark tipi olarak anılan tütünün en büyük ihracatçılarından olan Türkiye için, tütün sadece önemli bir tarım ürünü olmaktan çıkıp hem sosyal hem de toplumsal bir kimlik kazanmıştır. Tütün yetiştiriciliğinin Ege Bölgesi'ndeki kuvvetli temsilcilerinden Manisa halkı ise bu tarım ürünün sebep olduğu değişimler ile yeni bir sosyal yaşam biçimi kazanmıştır. 1930-1950 yıllarındaki kuruluş döneminde yüksek kâr marjı ve döviz kaynağı olmasıyla tütün ülke tarımının temel elemanlarından biri olmuştur. Ayrıca, kadınların iş gücüne katılması, aile ziraatının devamlılığı gibi konularda da Manisa gibi tütün tarımı ile geçimini sağlayan illerde toplumsal yapıya etkisi oldukça önemli olmuştur.
dc.description.abstractBecause of its geography and culture, Turkey is one of the countries which farming is the largest revenue item, especially just after the establishment of the Republic. In this regard, since it is very profitable and compatible, tobacco became more special among Turkish farmers and Turkish farming. The recognition of this important farming product caused it to be among the privileged farming products since the first years of the Republic. For the biggest exporter of the oriental tobacco, which is Turkey, tobacco became more than a farming product. It earned a social identity. People of Manisa are one of the biggest producers of tobacco in Aegean Region. Their social life has changed because of tobacco farming. Between 1930 and 1950, since the tobacco has a high profit potential and is a currency source, it became one of the fundamentals of the farming of Turkey. Also, the effect of tobacco to cities which are making a living with tobacco farming like Manisa, at the topics like women's participation in the labor force, continuity of the family agriculture cannot be underestimated.
