dc.description.abstract1970'li yıllarda Nevşehir'in Ürgüp ilçesine bağlı Karain köyünde ölüm oranı ve hasta sayısı oldukça yüksekti.
In the 1970s, the death rate and number of patients were quite high in Karain village of Ürgüp district of Nevşehir. At first, these diseases were diagnosed as tuberculosis. Dr. Yusuf İzzettin Barış was a chest diseases specialist at that time and the truth came to light as a result of his examination of a patient with Karain. As a result of the tests Dr. Barış made, he diagnosed the mesothelioma, which means lung membrane cancer, and started a study in Karain village with his team. As a result of these studies, it was revealed that erionite, which is in the geological structure of the village, causes cancer. The studies in the village gained an international dimension and many foreign scientists worked in the village of Karain. The village people, who started to feel uncomfortable with the increasing work in the village, did not comply with the measures taken for cancer and did not leave the village. Today, life continues in the village.
