The discussions regarding the construction of Ankara Metro began in the year 1967. The foundations of Ankara Metro have been attempted two times in 1980 and 1986, both of which did not continue. However, Murat Karayalçın's administration who took over the negotiations and processes started by Mehmet Altınsoy, successfully initiated the foundations of Ankara Metro in 1993 which was finished and opened to public in 1997 under the administration of Melih Gökçek. From the opening of the first line until the opening of the fourth line on January 5 th, 2017, Ankara Metro consists of 57.2 kilometers and 42 stations and addresses the need of transportation of hundreds of thousands of metropolitans each day.
