Türk seyircisinin belgesel izleme ihtiyacını karşılamak ve Türkiye’yi yurtdışında tanıtmak amacıyla kurulan TRT Belgesel, Türkiye’de 24 saat kesintisiz ve sistematik yayın yapan ilk belgesel kanalı olmasıyla incelemeye değer bir kurumdur. TRT Belgesel kanalı kurucu koordinatörü Hüdai Yılmazkan ve yönetmen Ertuğrul Karslıoğlu ile yaptığımız sözlü görüşmelerden edindiğimiz bilgileri çeşitli yazılı ve görsel kaynaklardan edindiğimiz bilgilerle harmanlayarak oluşturduğumuz bu çalışmada; öncelikle belgesel filmin tanımı, amacı ve belgesel akımlarının özelliklerinden bahsedilerek belgesel hakkında genel bir bilgilendirme yapılmıştır, ardından Türkiye’de belgesel filmin geçirdiği süreç 1914-1923 dönemi, 1924-1937 dönemi ve İkinci Dünya Savaşı’ndan günümüze kadar olarak sınıflandırılarak incelenmiş, TRT’nin TRT Belgesel kurulmadan önce yaptığı belgesellere değinilmiştir. Böylelikle konunun arka planı oluşturulmuştur. TRT Belgesel’in kuruluş hikayesi, TRT Belgesel’in kuruluş aşamasında yapılan çalışmalar, kuruluş aşamasından sonra TRT Belgesel, TRT Belgesel’in nasıl kaynak sağladığı, TRT Belgesel içerikli haberler, TRT Belgesel’de sansür ve RTüK ile ilişkisi anlatılmış; TRT Belgesel’in Türk belgeselciliğindeki yeri ve etkisi ortaya konulmuştur.

TRT Belgesel founded for meeting Turkish audience’s need of watching documentaries and introducing Turkey to foreigners is worth to investigate with being first Turkish TV documentary channel that broadcasts 24 hours-long programmes systematically. In our study constructed by combining information obtained from Hüdai Yılmazkan who is founder of TRT Belgesel and Ertuğrul Karslıoğlu who is director of documentary with the findings in various published and web-based publications, we initially gave information about documentary concept by mentioning definition, purpose of documentaries and different methodologies adopted in documentaries, then the evolution of Turkish documentary has been investigated by classifying as the documentaries made in 1914-1923, 1924-1927, and to nowadays after Second World War time intervals. Also, documentaries made by TRT before foundation of TRT Belgesel were mentioned. Thus, the background of our topic was constructed. The story of foundation of TRT Belgesel, what is done in the first period of TRT Belgesel, the situation of TRT Belgesel after passing time, how TRT Belgesel provides financial sources for itself, the news whose contents are about TRT Belgesel, censorship in TRT Belgesel and relationship with RTüK which is an institution applying censorship have been explained and the importance of TRT Belgesel and effect on Turkish documentarism have been elicited.
