A semi-analytic theory for similariton lasers and amplifiers is presented. The key is a shape-adaptive model pulse which can be continuously tuned to represent pulse shapes ranging from parabolic to Gaussian to sech-squared intensity profiles. © 2011 Optical Society of America.
