      Abstract
The thesis reviews the Turkish gecekondu literature by a critical approach through a historical perspective. The studies are examined on the basis of conceptual and methodological approaches. They are critically investigated in terms of their potential to explain and understand the changing conditions and recent transformations of gecekondus in the urban context. As a conclusion, a new conceptual and methodological approach is suggested for the future study of gecekondus.
