Item Open Access Can accessing much data reshape the theory? Inventory theory under the challenge of data-driven systems(Elsevier, 2022-08-24) Erkip, Nesim KohenIn this review, we discuss the data-driven systems and their effects on the implementation of the inventory theory. After overviewing the theory briefly, we group the data-driven approaches to simplify exposition. We consider the use of available data to estimate the parameters of more complex models, and propose developing the theory in that direction, as well. As a pedagogical example, an extension of the standard EOQ model with heterogenous customers is presented. The review proposes a research agenda for inventory problems and concludes with discussing challenges for the future.Item Open Access Copula-based multivariate input modeling(2012) Biller B.; Corlu, C. G.In this survey, we review the copula-based input models that are well suited to provide multivariate input-modeling support for stochastic simulations with dependent inputs. Specifically, we consider the situation in which the dependence between pairs of simulation input random variables is measured by tail dependence (i.e., the amount of dependence in the tails of a bivariate distribution) and review the techniques to construct copula-based input models representing positive tail dependencies. We complement the review with the parameter estimation from multivariate input data and the random-vector generation from the estimated input model with the purpose of driving the simulation. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.Item Embargo Facility location decisions for drone delivery: A literature review(Elsevier BV, 2023-10-30) Dükkancı, Okan; Campbell, James F.; Yetiş Kara, BaharThis study presents a comprehensive literature survey on facility location problems for drone (uncrewed vehicle) delivery, where either (i) drones are the only vehicles, or (ii) drones and other vehicles (e.g., trucks) work together for delivery, but drones do not ride in or on the other vehicles. The main goals of this review are to identify and categorize fundamental facility location problems associated with drone delivery, to document the large volume of research in this area, to provide a connection between the studies from different research fields that consider similar location problems, and to highlight promising areas for future research. We first discuss and classify the functions of drones and the various types of facilities used for drone and hybrid vehicle-drone (e.g., truck and drone, or transit and drone) delivery systems, including drone bases (fixed or temporary), other vehicle bases, recharging stations, (re)supply points, and platooning points. The literature is reviewed and categorized based on the types of vehicles involved and their interactions, the types of facilities located, the types of drones and the location space (discrete or continuous). Each category is analyzed in terms of the modeling approach, decision(s), the objective function(s), constraint(s) and additional feature(s). The paper concludes with some promising future research directions.Item Open Access Humanitarian facility location under uncertainty: Critical review and future prospects(Elsevier, 2021-01-08) Dönmez, Zehranaz; Yetiş Kara, Bahar; Karsu, Özlem; Saldanha-da-Gama, F.This paper provides a comprehensive review of the research done on facility location problems under uncertainty in a humanitarian context. The major goal is to summarize and help structuring this topic, which has increasingly attracted the attention of the scientific community. The literature is reviewed from different perspectives namely, in terms of the type of facilities involved, the decisions to make, the criteria to optimize, the paradigm used for capturing uncertainty, and the solution method adopted. The detailed analysis provided in the manuscript also contributes to identifying the distinguishing features of the problems in the topic. An outcome of the state-of-the-art presented is the identification of the current research trends, expectations and holes in the existing knowledge thus highlighting relevant research directions.Item Open Access Joint mixability of some integer matrices(Elsevier B.V., 2016) Bellini, F.; Karaşan, O. Ç.We study the problem of permuting each column of a given matrix to achieve minimum maximal row sum or maximum minimal row sum, a problem of interest in probability theory and quantitative finance where quantiles of a random variable expressed as the sum of several random variables with unknown dependence structure are estimated. If the minimum maximal row sum is equal to the maximum minimal row sum the matrix has been termed jointly mixable (see e.g. Haus (2015), Wang and Wang (2015), Wang et al. (2013)). We show that the lack of joint mixability (the joint mixability gap) is not significant, i.e., the gap between the minimum maximal row sum and the maximum minimal row sum is either zero or one for a class of integer matrices including binary and complete consecutive integers matrices. For integer matrices where all entries are drawn from a given set of discrete values, we show that the gap can be as large as the difference between the maximal and minimal elements of the discrete set. The aforementioned result also leads to a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for matrices with restricted domain. Computing the gap for a {0,1,2}-matrix is proved to be equivalent to finding column permutations minimizing the difference between the maximum and minimum row sums. A polynomial procedure for computing the optimum difference by solving the maximum flow problem on an appropriate graph is given. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Item Open Access A load-based and due-date-oriented approach to order review release in job shops(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, 2000) Sabuncuoğlu, I.; Karapınar, H. Y.In this paper, a new order review/release (ORR) method is proposed for shop floor control systems. The proposed method utilizes both job due date and shop load information to improve the effectiveness of the ORR function in production systems. The performance of the new method is compared to those of a few well-known ORR methods under four experimental conditions. The results of extensive simulation experiments indicate that the proposed method is superior with respect to the mean absolute deviation measure. In general, it is also better than existing methods for the other performance measures. Furthermore, we show that the proposed method is more robust to variations in system load and processing times than the other ORR methods examined.Item Open Access Micro tool design and fabrication: a review(Elsevier, 2018) Oliaei, S. P.; Perveen, A.Mechanical micromachining is considered as a cost-effective and efficient fabrication technique to produce three dimensional features and free-form surfaces from various engineering materials. Micro cutting tools are an essential part of mechanical micromachining and they are exposed to harsh conditions which reduces tool life and adversely affect the economics of the process. The challenge is therefore to maintain the tool rigidity and cutting edge sharpness for extended period of time. Thus, the design, fabrication and durability of micro cutting tools are of significant importance for successful micromachining operations. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding about the capabilities, characteristics, and limitations of different fabrication techniques used in the manufacturing of micro cutting tools. State-of-the-art micro cutting tool design and coating technology has been presented for various micromachining applications. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first summarises the up-to-date knowledge and provides an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion and used as a point of reference by a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes.Item Open Access Perspectives on modeling hub location problems(Elsevier, 2020-10-02) Alumur, S. E.The aim of this paper is to provide insights for better modeling hub location problems to help create a road map for future hub location research. We first present a taxonomy to provide a framework for the broad array of hub location models, and then seek to identify key gaps in the literature that provide opportunities for better models. We provide some new perspectives in several areas, including the historical evolution of hub location research, models for economies of scale, and relevant characteristics of different applications. We also provide a succinct summary of state-of-the-art formulation and solution approaches. We conclude with a set of themes that can be addressed in the future for better modeling hub location problems.Item Open Access The refugee camp management: a general framework and a unifying decision-making model(Emerald Group Publishing, 2019) Karsu, Özlem; Kara, Bahar Yetiş; Selvi, B.Purpose: Motivated by the increasing need to provide support to refugees, which remains as a pressing issue in the agenda of many countries, the purpose of this paper is to consider the refugee camp management problem. Although each of these countries may have different procedures shaped by their own culture, rules and regulations, the main structure of the problem can be modeled utilizing a general framework which will apply to different practices. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, the authors consider the issue with an operations research (OR) perspective and provide such a framework utilizing Turkish Red Crescent (TRC)’s field expertise in many regions of the world. In the proposed framework, the overall refugee camp management problem is first categorized in two main phases: the establishment phase, which consists of one-time decisions like infrastructure design and the administration phase, which focuses on routine decisions that are taken on a periodic basis like aid distribution. Findings: The authors then provide a unifying decision-making model for the establishment phase and detail the administrative phase via subcategories, linking the relevant problems to the OR literature. The proposed framework is general enough to be used by practitioners and to be utilized by the academicians to define new OR problems to the literature. Originality/value: TRC’s know-how is very broad and extensive. Integrating that know-how with OR perspective, the authors provide a general framework that could be of use to practitioners as well as academicians. The proposed framework will constitute an example for countries of asylum and national or international NGOs to manage the refugee camps efficiently. The authors also highlight main challenges and dynamics of the decision-making problems encountered in different parts of the proposed framework, which may constitute many different problems to the OR literature each of which can open new venues for future research.Item Open Access Relationships between prosodic and musical meters in the Beste form of classical Turkish music(University of Texas Press Journals Division, 2005) Bektaş, T.Classical Turkish music is essentially vocal in nature, and a large portion of its lyrics is taken from Ottoman divân literature. The primary prosodic meter used in divân is arûz, whereas the musical meter utilized in classical Turkish music is usûl. This study investigates the relationships between the large rhythmic patterns (usûl) and the prosodic meters (arûz) utilized in the beste form of classical Turkish music. In an analysis of 466 beste, a relationship was found between each usûl and arûz meter, but an even stronger concordance was discovered between each usûl and a class of arûz patterns called bahir. Thus, this research establishes that, rather than thinking in terms of an arûz-usûl relationship, it is more appropriate to emphasize a bahir-usûl relationship within the beste form. The results of this study confirm the existence of this relationship, which was hypothesized by Tannkorur to exist in the beste form (1990:6). © 2005 by the University of Texas Press.Item Open Access Robust scenario optimization based on downside-risk measure for multi-period portfolio selection(Springer, 2007) Pınar, M. Ç.We develop and test multistage portfolio selection models maximizing expected end-of-horizon wealth while minimizing one-sided deviation from a target wealth level. The trade-off between two objectives is controlled by means of a non-negative parameter as in Markowitz Mean-Variance portfolio theory. We use a piecewise-linear penalty function, leading to linear programming models and ensuring optimality of subsequent stage decisions. We adopt a simulated market model to randomly generate scenarios approximating the market stochasticity. We report results of rolling horizon simulation with two variants of the proposed models depending on the inclusion of transaction costs, and under different simulated stock market conditions. We compare our results with the usual stochastic programming models maximizing expected end-of-horizon portfolio value. The results indicate that the robust investment policies are indeed quite stable in the face of market risk while ensuring expected wealth levels quite similar to the competing expected value maximizing stochastic programming model at the expense of solving larger linear programs.
