Item Open Access Comparative analysis of biology textbooks with regard to cellular respiration and photosynthesis(Bilkent University, 2012) İnanç Gök, TuğbaThe topics of cellular respiration and photosynthesis in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Ministry of National Education (MEB) biology textbooks were analysed and compared with regard to content, presentation and learning strategies by using content analysis as a research method. Interviews were conducted with five practising biology teachers. Both textbooks follow a general to specific (deductive) order in the topics and have similar features in terms of readability and typography. The assessment strategies of neither textbooks focus on measuring higher order cognitive levels. The differences between the two textbooks are prominent in the content, presence and absence of major themes, number of student-centred activities, real life connections and use of technology. The MEB textbook had more comprehensive content but with many details which were not appropriate for the students‘ level. While the IBDP textbook included all major themes in the two topics, the MEB textbook lacked some important ones. The MEB textbook is richer in terms of student-centred activities, experiments and real life connections. The IBDP textbook is richer in terms of technology. The findings of the content analysis were supported by the ideas of the practising teachers.Item Open Access Gender representations in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade ELT coursebooks published by the Turkish Ministry of National Education(Bilkent University, 2013) Bilgin, HilalHow genders are represented in teaching materials affect social values, behavior; and messages conveyed through gender roles presented in the coursebooks influence the development of students’ self-esteem and their attitudes towards genders (Lee and Collins, 2009). Hence, there is a need for guidance through the correct selection of the coursebooks and teaching materials by taking gender representations into account. This study explored how genders are represented in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade English language teaching (ELT) coursebooks published by the Turkish Ministry of National Education and used at state schools. The books were analyzed by using written content analysis for texts and dialogues, and visual content analysis for pictures in the coursebooks within a conceptual framework adapted from the ABC of Gender Analysis by Kabira and Masinjila (1995). The results of the study showed that there is an overall balance between the representations of females and males. However, imbalance is observed when individual categories in individual grade levels were examined more closely. Therefore, the results of this study indicate a need for the evaluation of the content of coursebooks with the purpose of eliminating gender bias.Item Open Access An institutionalist analysis to the EU's enlargement policies : a comparative study of Polish and Turkish accession processes(Bilkent University, 2013) Kutlukaya, Esra UsluEuropean Union (EU) enlargement has been somewhat neglected theoretically in studies of European integration despite its importance both for member states, applicant states and the EU itself. The main purpose of this dissertation is to make a theoretical contribution to the literature through applying an institutionalist analysis to the attitudes of European Commissioners and member states as expressed through their speeches. The major research question of this dissertation is: „Which theory of institutionalism, rationalist or constructivist/sociological, better explains the attitudes of European Commissioners and member states towards deepening relations with Poland and Turkey?‟ In order to answer this question, the different stages of the EU‟s Eastern enlargement are analyzed through the case studies of Turkey and Poland. The results of this analysis demonstrate that the logic of consequentialism rather than logic of appropriateness has prevailed in the formation of the attitudes of both European Commissioners and member states towards Poland and Turkey.
