Item Open Access The Analysis of Turkish foreign policy under Justice and Development Party government in the post-9/11 world(Bilkent University, 2008) Yanarışık, OğuzhanThe disastrous attacks on 11 September 2001 signalled the beginning of a new era within which more people believe that Islam is in conflict with the West and western values. Although the Islamic political identity was traditionally based on opposition to the West and the westernization in Turkey, rapprochement between the Turkish Islamists and western values occurred ironically in the same era. The establishment and the rise of Justice and Development Party (JDP) are seen by many observers as an evidence of this transformation in the position of Islamists towards the West. This thesis evaluates the impact of systemic interactions on the identity formation, interest construction, and thus foreign policy behaviours of JDP-led Turkey through constructivist lenses. In other words, it takes the changing international environment in the post 9/11 world as independent variable, within which international norms are interrogated, East-West perceptions are reconsidered and identities are reconstructed. On the other hand, it takes identity, interests and behaviors of JDP-led Turkey and other international actors as dependent variables. Although she is known as one of the pioneers of the modern dance, this thesis concentrates on her scandalous and unsuccessful visit to the United States in 1922 and why it turned out to be a disaster. By using her autobiography My Life and the books written by the ones closest to her, as well as the newspaper articles, my thesis will try to demonstrate that in an atmosphere that stressed conformity and conservatism following the First Red Scare of 1919-20, her Soviet affiliations and her thoughts on nudity were the reasons behind her unsuccessful tour and her decision not to come back to the United States again.Item Open Access Ufuk : how the US information agency molded Turkish elite opinion, 1960-1980(Bilkent University, 2014) Feyzullahoğlu, BurcuThis study argues that the United States Information Agency carried out an intense public diplomacy program in Turkey between 1960 and 1980 in order to ameliorate the U.S. image among the Turkish urban elite, especially among the members of the Republican People’s Party and thus to prevent Turkey from having closer relations with the USSR. For this purpose, the study contains a close reading of the USIA propaganda material targeting this small but influential group, namely Ufuk Magazine and uncovers the image that the USIA aimed to create in order “to win hearts and minds” of the RPP members, members of Turkish Foreign Ministry of the time, academics and journalists in a period of Cold War where the peripheries rather than Europe became the target of the U.S. public diplomacy efforts.Item Open Access The United States’ nuclear non-proliferation failure in the 1970s: the cases of India and Pakistan(Bilkent University, 2021-08) Hussain, UmerDuring the 1970s, the US government started becoming increasingly wary of the dangers of nuclear proliferation. The absence of a well-functioning international regime of non-proliferation compounded the United States’ fears of a world in which multiple nations outside their sphere of influence could acquire nuclear weapons. In this thesis, I explore the cases of two South Asian nations, India and Pakistan. The Indian peaceful nuclear explosion of 1974 was the result of a relatively low priority given to non-proliferation by the US. It took the US and the world by surprise and India’s accession to the ranks of the nuclear powers led to a rethinking of US nuclear non-proliferation policy. India’s 1974 explosion also paved the way for the acceleration of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme. Pakistan’s nuclear policy was shaped out of a perceived existential threat and possibility of nuclear blackmail that it faced from India. After several failed attempts to secure security guarantees from the US, Pakistan disregarded the international non-proliferation regime to try to maintain parity with India. The US government’s decision not to commit itself fully to Pakistan’s security was what ended up undercutting its broader non-proliferation goals by making it seem an unreliable ally to Pakistan.
